[community profile] ssrconfidential is up, so if you want to read lots and lots of Agent Carter fic, hie you to the archive. The collection is here.

BUT, first go and read my gift, because it is adorable and ferocious and starts with a tiny Peggy Carter running away to join the circus. Ack, so beautiful, and so sad at the end:
Four Times Peggy Tried to Run Away (and the one time it finally worked), (G, Michael Carter & Peggy Carter)

Some other recs from randomly browsing the collection:
Beautiful Ana-centric story, from her rescue, to post-injury recovery. And Zsa-Zsa Gabor!:

From Buzzfeed: Canadians taste fairy bread for the first time; have a lot of feelings - Fairy bread is an Aussie thing: bread and butter with sprinkles. This video is tragic and triumphant at the same time, as the Canadians struggle to understand the phenomenon, and then see the true beauty of the thing.

From Etsy: Tiger shark tooth cufflinks. I just feel that this is a thing that John Reese would wear. Okay, maybe not, but he totally should wear them, then use them to cut through ropes and escape to rescue everyone from the dark dystopia that S5 has become. /bad fic ideas I have in the middle of the night.

Rando cool tumblr: Bowie and Nudibranchs. "It works to such an uncanny degree it’s hard not to imagine that a young Bowie received an illustrated book of nudibranchia at a young age, and spent the rest of his career mining the pages for new looks."

tl;dr: I'm on drugs and they seem to work okay.

I have my [community profile] ssrconfidential assignment, and it's lovely and open and exactly the kind of thing I'd like to write. I just need... to get started, I think. I am a bit worried about the meds knocking down my ability to write, but I think that once I get a plot bunny nibble, I'll be right. And at the moment, I'm coming to the end of a Person of Interest rewatch to get ready for season five (SEASON FIVE OMG) and I'm all about the POI plot bunnies. So many bunnies.

Dear SSR author,

This is exciting! Thank you for loving Agent Carter, and for creating a fanwork for me.

I love Agent Carter for the spy shenanigans, for Peggy and a whole bunch of awesome women, and for the part it takes in building the MCU. More Marvel world building is a good thing.

I am pretty easy-going when it comes to creative exchanges – I have always loved what has been created for me, and I think that this process of coming together to celebrate a show that we all love is amazing.

I've nominated mostly femslash or gen relationships, but when it comes down to it, I'm happy with gen, het or slash. I do prefer stories with queer presence, so if you prefer to write Peggy as straight, I'd love some of the other characters or OCs to be not-straight. I haven't nominated all characters, but I'm happy to see any of the cast appear in the story. I'm particularly fond of the push-and-pull friendship between Howard and Peggy, for example. And I love Rose, whom I suspect actually runs the LA SSR office. If you're the kind of person who likes to throw easter eggs into your fic and pull from other sources, I'm a Marvel comics fan, I'm up to date with Agents of SHIELD, and I've seen all the MCU movies except for Ant Man.

My requests are meant to be guidelines for the kind of story I like, and to provide inspiration. I'm not in anyway fixated on the specific of the prompts, so if your idea takes you in a different direction, please follow your heart.

Peggy/Dottie, Dottie and Natasha, Peggy/Dottie/Violet, Michael and Peggy, Bernard the Flamingo )

Miscellanea
I don't have a preferred prompt or pairing! I know I've written more about some than others, but that's as it came to me while I wrote this letter. Please know I love them all, and I would be equally delighted if you were to use any of them.

For stalking purposes, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina and [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina. All my previous Dear Author letters are here: Dear Author. If you have any questions, you're welcome to message my partner, [personal profile] lilacsigil.

Thank you again for being a creator in [community profile] ssrconfidential! I hope you enjoy the exchange.
st_aurafina: Rainy day, person with a rainbow umbrella in the distance (Rainbow umbrella)
The Jehovahs just called on us, from which I take to mean that since we have moved, they haven't updated their hobo sign at the gate that says LESBIAN HOUSE. Thanks, lady, I love being told, on my own doorstep, that God loves me despite my choices in life. I asked her to try to be compassionate and then I closed the door on her. (ETA: [personal profile] lilacsigil has ordered us a couple of rainbow flag stickers, one for the mailbox and one for the front door of the pharmacy. We can make our own hobo signs.)

I'm not going to get my Winter Soldier fic finished before Civil War comes out, and it's making me queasy. I want to enjoy and squee over the trailers, but instead I feel guilty and anxious, which is a great mindset to try and write from. I have 60K, I need maybe 15K. I want it done. I like this story a lot, and I want to post it. Ugh.

So, obvs, I am super anxious. Everything is anxious-making. I am very tired and bored of this steam engine in my brain that runs all day and all night, churning out thoughts and feelings that are completely divorced from reality. Even more, I'm tired of knowing these fears are out of perspective and irrational, but still feeling them. It is such a waste of time. I have better things I could with this powerful, energetic, imaginative brain. /is trying to be positive about brain. It's a good brain. It's kept me alive for 45 years.

[personal profile] naye was talking about podcasts, and I am very into podcasts right now! Podcasts are awesome because they free up my hands so I can crochet or shred zucchini or do housework. But even more than that, a podcast puts a brake on my anxiety-based running dialogue with myself. I can't listen to my inner voice berating me when there's a voice in my ear telling me something I really want to know.

I'm going to link to [personal profile] naye's recs for fictional podcasts, because I agree with all of the recs, and listen to all of those stories (except for 'Alice isn't Dead' but it's queued.) ETA: Done and I'm never eating omelet again.

Here are some non-fiction recs:

Hello to the new people! I have a sticky post with all the basics and an 'All About Where I Live' post

Hey, Aussie fats - does anyone want to try We Love Colors tights? I bought a pair in fuck-off neon yellow, and fuck-off stop-sign red, and the colours are amazing, but they don't bloody fit me around the thighs. They're fantastic around the calves, and they fit me around the waist, but they don't go comfortably over my thighs. Frustrating! They're so nice and colour-dense, and vivid and so exactly what people tell fat women they shouldn't wear, so I'm really sad. They're size EE. Free to a good home inside Australia - I'll cover the postage.

[livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang goes along and along. I really wanted to have old!Peggy take a part in my mystery, and I'm writing her now, but gosh, I worry I'm not going to do okay by her. I know the things I don't want in old!Peggy fic: a cure, Peggy suddenly doing things she's really not physically or mentally capable of, sweet old lady things (because she's never been sweet and I doubt she found it in old age.) It's a matter of working out what I want her to do, what she's plausibly able to do, how she can be awesome, without her sections becoming deus ex machina or overly sickly. It's a very interesting line and I'm glad I have [personal profile] lilacsigil to bounce my draft off as I write it. And I really need to get going on the art, for both of us.

In the garden, there's finally been a bit of spare time to plant the seeds, so yesterday we put tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber (all heirloom mixes, so who knows what we'll get? So exciting!), mesclun mix, rocket, and basil. They're all in the hothouse which is nice and humid at the moment. Tomatoes need to be ready to go into the beds by Cup Day (which is the first Tuesday in November.) There's tons of bok choy in the beds right now, so I'm making ramen tomorrow to use it up. (There's stock cooking up now while I'm typing this. And I can totally soft-boil eggs now, it's brilliant.)

I finally got 8tracks to work on my laptop and now I can listen to fanmixes again. (I miss megaupload!) I really liked this mix of French rap and pop:
Player embedded behind here because the art was cute too )
Being able to interact with 8tracks makes me want to re-upload all my old fanmixes that I lost when megaupload went down.

A recipe: Lemon buttermilk donuts. (CN: some diet/'clean eating' talk in the link.) Recipe has quantities in grams as well as cups (important for me, because Australian cups are bigger) and it makes a nice small batch. I had a donut pan that I'd never used but really wanted to, enough that I held onto through the giant kitchen purge before we moved to the new house. I'm glad I tried it because it cooked these little sweeties really perfectly. Definitely going to mess around with that recipe some more in the future.

This is how ours came out )

I found something to nominate as a microfandom for this year's Yuletide: Find the girls on the negatives. I love the photos - so beautiful, so mysterious - and I think there's lots of potential there for fic. Like, femslash (since it seems possible that each woman photographed the other, right?) Or mermaid femslash - they're going home together at last! Or, really, anything.

That what have you been up to meme:

So what have you been up to?
Um, work, random medical stuff that seems to take an age but never really gets done. I still have a cold. This is the cold that never ends, it goes on and on and on, my friends. It's not even that bad, it's just that every time I think I've kicked it, something stressful happens and it stops in the doorway, turns around, and gets comfy again.

Major life changes? Same old same old?
My grandfather passed away last week. It was sort of expected - he was 94, he had dementia and was quite frail - but it was also kind of a shock. I am weirdly sad, though I wouldn't say we were close, and I'd definitely say we had some conflicts. I don't know, mortality and all that, I guess, and I was sad for my dad who has cared for him. And nobody wants to see their tiny Nonna crying broken heartedly at the door of the hearse. (But she told me she was glad that Dad got him a really fancy coffin with brass bits and so on. I'm glad that made her happy.)

It was deeply weird to be around family members from whom I am estranged. Need to unpack that later with the therapist. But I got to meet my little sister's boyfriend, which was nice. He's from a very conservative background which has been a source of conflict between them - I think we were the first gay people he's ever met - but I think it was really gutsy of him to go to the funeral, and if he's willing to do that to support Nat, then I'm giving him some Brownie points.

What fandom are you in/do you spend most of your time in?
- MCU fandom, still working on the Captain America fic. Currently embedded with Howard in WWII.

- Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, smashing out my [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang. I thought I'd missed the deadline but because I'm doing my own art, I get more time, which is supposed to be for actually doing the art, but I'm still finishing the writing, oops. Currently hanging with Peggy Carter in 1946.

- GREAT BRITISH BAKE-OFF omg, but mostly on Tumblr. I love Bake-Off time, yay!

- Sense8 - I've finished, and I really want to write some fic. But I have to Mavel Bang first. And omg, NaNo is looming.

Where do you hang out online?
[personal profile] st_aurafina

[archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina.
Oh, and [pinterest.com profile] dansnark, if you want to see a million pins of art journals and crochet scarfs.

What are you reading?
I am having such a crappy time reading right now. My concentration has been busted for months. I read fic, and I'm having iddish fun reading through [livejournal.com profile] ckingsbridge's novels. She's got the kink and the cuddling, it's all beautiful.

What are you watching?
Hannibal, for the last time. My non-spoilery finale reaction: Omg, Hannibal, you're the worst. No, Hannibal, stop! Stop! What am I watching? Is this fic? THIS IS FIC, ISN'T IT? THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN FIC!!

Killjoys:
This show is awesome and almost everything I wanted Firefly to be. Four episodes in, still think it needs moar actual queer. But otherwise so far, I love it. Love Dutch, love her team, love the brotherly relationship, love the zingy UST, love the world building. Love the ship.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Because we've got access to it via Stan, and the ridiculous luxury of being able to dial up any episode any time is heady. I'm mostly cherry-picking favourite episodes. We just watched Time's Arrow, and I love Guinan.

What are you making?
I'm still crocheting the epic blanket, but I keep taking detours to make other small projects. I'm working up an infinity scarf for me. FOR ME. (I mostly give everything I make away.)

What are you squeeing about today?
Hannibal, but it's a slightly nervous, somewhat confused squee. That scene from the credits, wtf, we will be debating that for years.

If you could rope old fandom friends into a new fandom, it would be...
I don't rope people into things! But there's a lot of new stuff out there. Hey, is anyone watching X Company? It has some damn pretty people, but I don't normally do real life war fandoms. (Only, you know, Winter Soldier, and that one amazing episode of Sanctuary.) Is it really sad? Or just regular sad?

I should really watch/read/dive into _______ and then come talk to you about it!
Come and tell me about anything! I'm nearly all caught up on TV now, I'm going to need more stuff.
st_aurafina: Sam Wilson in his Falcon suit (Marvel: Falcon)
Today I very much feel like the world is a terrible place, and people are always going to be hurting other people, and I just want to lie down on the grass and pretend to be a tree.

But it's raining.

([personal profile] lilacsigil: Trees don't lie on the grass.
Me: Dead trees do.)

Cheerful things:

1. GREAT BRITISH BAKE-OFF IS BACK

[Mary Berry's elation at the mention of gin.]

My life is made whole again. And wow, 9 million viewers for the first episode, yay.

2. Captain America NaNo rewrite is in the middle of a Howard POV bit, a WWII flashback. I really like this fic. I like writing it, and I like editing it, and I need to hurry up so I can get to my favourite bits. And I need to get it posted before it gets jossed by a third MCU movie. (This fic has JARVIS in it, and old Agents of SHIELD before shit went down, and apparently there's a scene with 80's Peggy Carter in Ant Man and she doesn't have the steel bob I imagined her with in this fic so i probably need to check this out.)

3. [etsy.com profile] weelittlestitches put out an X-Files pattern.

[Mulder and Scully, cross-stitched figures. Text says 'The truth is out there']

4. Whale season! At our local beach, we've had Southern Right whales, porpoises, dolphins, and seals. And a pod of orca - I didn't know we even had orca down here. There's seals lazing outside the surf lifesaving club right now.

Further afield, back in July there was a Migaloo sighting: Rare white humpback whale spotted in Cook Strait

5. Spoilers for Agent Carter )

6. Hats for dogs! Hats with ear holes for dogs! By [ravelry.com profile] jessie-plaskett.

[The noble Golden Retriever, in a pink and white striped beannie with plaited ties.]

7. This terri-bad movie is finally coming out:

It was shot in Warrnambool, and it mostly seems to be fart jokes and it looks so amazingly cliched and bad. But Warrnambool is all WE'RE IN A MOVIE COME TOURISTS COME LEAVE YOUR LOVELY TOURIST DOLLARS HERE! I don't know. There are Maremma dogs guarding the penguins, that's true. I'm just all cringe-amazed by the trailer. It's so Strayan. Onya, mate.

Footy season started, which means I get to sip my coffee and relax a bit at work. I don't like football much, but I'm grateful for slightly slower Saturdays. And coffee. Always grateful for coffee.

ETA: Apparently not football yet? IDK where are the people?

I have been in a bit of a slump, brain-wise, but I'm coming up out of it now. (I'm starting to see a pattern via my tumblr queue - I drop posting down to three per day because it's just too hard to keep that queue topped up, then slowly it fills up again as I have more concentration and energy. When I've got 100 posts in the queue, I up the rate to ten per day. It's an odd but definite pattern.)

Today is officially one year since we put the sticker on the sign for the new house. We've been in for six months. It's a lovely house for summer, as it turns out, and catches cross breezes beautifully. The veggie garden went in late, but we've had oodles of zucchini, peas and basil. Only one tomato, unfortunately. It was delicious but tiny.

Cooking has mostly revolved around zucchini, and the question of how we can get more zucchini into each meal. (Chopped and sauteed with garlic goes well into a toasted cheese sandwich, for example.) The Courgette tag at BBC Good Food has been a wealth of fun. Courgette and Orange cake was the recipe I made the most often, I think, though I make it with an orange glaze because [personal profile] lilacsigil doesn't like cream cheese icing.

Fannishly, I consumed much:

Agent Carter was beautiful and amazing and perfect for me, if not perfect overall. I hope, hope we get a second season. I hope I get a chance to contribute to viewing statistics in some way soon. (I furiously liked things on Facebook, for the little good that does.) I want to write fic. Dottie and Peggy and Angie fic. Le sigh. So many women. Plz come back, writing mojo.

Person of Interest S3 was this amazing blur of femslashy moments, and finally clicking with Reese, and loving all the dystopian AI storylines, and adoring Root in god-mode. And sad about Read more... ). I'd love recs for fic that's non-spoilery past the S3 finale, if anyone has any.

I am inspired by many gifs on tumblr to give The 100 a try again. Much femslash, actual queer content, wow.

But I've given Gotham the flick - it got too nasty. And spoilers )

The Great British Sewing Bee - I'm almost finished. Just the final to go. It was a great season!

The Comic Relief Bake-Off - there was this one amazing episode, with Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Lulu, and Dame Edna Everage. It was like the best episode of AbFab EVER. It was amazing. I love Comic Relief Bake-Off anyway, but this was unusually epic and amazing.

Broadchurch - I have no idea what made me suddenly watch this show - I'm not really fond of that particular style British grim crime drama. I think the small-town angle caught me. And Olivia Colman is ace balls. I'm in the middle of Season 2 right now (so much shirtless James D'Arcy, wow.) spoilers ).

So, anyway. This is me. I am here! And feeling better. And hopefully back to fic soon. I have a build-up of fic feelings.
