st_aurafina: (Yuletide: panic!)
Yuletide! It seems like Yuletide comes around faster each year, which I don't mind at all because I FREAKING LOVE this exchange. This is my eleventh, and I've had a great time every year.

So, first up and foremost: I love Yuletide. I will love what you write. I've loved every Yuletide fic I've received. Please don't stress out! Please have fun writing.

Secondly, I write long letters with lots of suggestions, but they really are just suggestions. If you're one of those writers that does not enjoy being fenced in, then fly free, you beautiful wild thing. And if we don't gel on character choice, ODAO is a-okay with me. I like all the characters in these fandoms, I love all these fandoms for the stories and the worldbuilding. If you have to, ODAO like it's a rodeo.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not so much the mundane kind), crossovers (see [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina for fandoms), teamwork.

Plot! Big sweeping plot, small canon-compliant plot, things for the characters to do while they're snarking at each other, things going on around them while they're getting it on. I like stuff to happen.

Competence! I have a huge competence kink. I love seeing people being really, really good at stuff. I love lateral thinkers and characters who follow their instincts and people putting their skills to use in unexpected ways.

Ladies! BAMF female characters who don't have to bring other female characters down to be BAMFs. Mothers and sisters and girlfriends and girlfriends and wives. Women with agency. Women treated with respect.

Representation! People of colour. People outside the gender binary. Queer identities and culture. Non-nuclear families, found families, poly families, family that is family because you get to define it.

Things that I don't like as much (but can handle if the story takes you there):
Sad endings, character death, angst, embarrassment.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Requests: The Black Tapes, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Inhuman Condition, Confident - Demi Lovato (Music Video), Wynonna Earp, Stranger Things )

Miscellanea

I do not have a preferred fandom. I haven't put them up in any order except how they came to me tonight as I write my letter. I might have written more about one than another, but that doesn't mean I'm fixated on that fandoms over others. I love them all, and I would be equally delighted with fic for any of them.

If we've matched on a large canon, and it's not going to work for you, I've got a few small or easily accessed canons here:

- Inhuman Condition is a short webseries about a psychologist who treats patients with paranormal characteristics. The main character is Michelle, who is played by Torri Higginson from SGA.
- Picnic at Hanging Rock is an Australian movie set in the Victorian era, about the disappearance of three schoolgirls. It's spooky and atmospheric. It's also as old as me, which means you'll probably find it in a bargain bin. (I guess that means I belong in a bargain bin, too. Oh, dear.)
- Confident by Demi Lovato is a music video. It also stars Michelle Rodriguez, there's a lot of fighting, and women having each other's back. It's great. With explosions.
- The Black Tapes is a podcast about a journalist following the career of a paranormal investigator and known sceptic. It's just finished its second season.

st_aurafina: Agent Carter holding a walkie talkie (Agent Carter: Peggy walkie talkie)
Dear SSR author,

This is exciting! Thank you for loving Agent Carter, and for creating a fanwork for me.

I love Agent Carter for the spy shenanigans, for Peggy and a whole bunch of awesome women, and for the part it takes in building the MCU. More Marvel world building is a good thing.

I am pretty easy-going when it comes to creative exchanges – I have always loved what has been created for me, and I think that this process of coming together to celebrate a show that we all love is amazing.

I've nominated mostly femslash or gen relationships, but when it comes down to it, I'm happy with gen, het or slash. I do prefer stories with queer presence, so if you prefer to write Peggy as straight, I'd love some of the other characters or OCs to be not-straight. I haven't nominated all characters, but I'm happy to see any of the cast appear in the story. I'm particularly fond of the push-and-pull friendship between Howard and Peggy, for example. And I love Rose, whom I suspect actually runs the LA SSR office. If you're the kind of person who likes to throw easter eggs into your fic and pull from other sources, I'm a Marvel comics fan, I'm up to date with Agents of SHIELD, and I've seen all the MCU movies except for Ant Man.

My requests are meant to be guidelines for the kind of story I like, and to provide inspiration. I'm not in anyway fixated on the specific of the prompts, so if your idea takes you in a different direction, please follow your heart.

Peggy/Dottie, Dottie and Natasha, Peggy/Dottie/Violet, Michael and Peggy, Bernard the Flamingo )

Miscellanea
I don't have a preferred prompt or pairing! I know I've written more about some than others, but that's as it came to me while I wrote this letter. Please know I love them all, and I would be equally delighted if you were to use any of them.

Dear Author-shaped-person,

Yuletide #10? But how? How can it be a full decade I've been doing this amazing exchange?

I feel old, but in a festive and merry, nose-like-a-cherry kind of way.

First up, I want Yuletide to be fun for you as well as me. That means that if you're the kind of person who won't be fenced in, please don't freak out at this long and chatty letter! I like guidelines and plot bunnies, but that doesn't mean you do. I'd appreciate you steering away from my squicks, but otherwise, go be free, you magnificent wild spirit.

If you are the kind of person who wants to know all the details and preferences, or see what plot bunnies are rattling around in my head, then read on. We are sympatico!

Here are my general likes and dislikes, c&p'ed from previous letters:

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not the no powers barista kind), crossovers (see [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina for fandoms), teamwork.

Oh, Yuletide Writer! It's that time of year! Let's hang all that festive junk in all the right places.

Welcome to my letter. Woah, this is my ninth Yuletide letter. That's a bit scary.

First up, I want to let you know that I will love what you write. I promise! Eight Yuletides down, and I've loved every fic written for me. I love Yuletide, and I love that it's grown into this giant, multifaceted party celebrating fandom.

This letter is mostly optional. If you're the kind of writer who chafes at boundaries, please don't let this letter fence you in. I've thrown together a bunch of possibilities for these fandoms, but they're meant as inspiration, not as concrete requests. I would appreciate if you can veer away from the things that squick me but otherwise, if your muse is pulling you in other directions, that's awesome.

If, like me, you prefer prompts with guidelines (Lots of guidelines! All the guidelines!), then I've talked about each fandom behind the cut. I've nominated specific characters, and I know by Yuletide rules you're meant to include all of them, but I'm fine if you don't. I just wanted to narrow down the field for some of the larger fandoms and to give you an idea of who I find most interesting in the canon.

Death by Silver, Captive Prince, Stigmata, Ms Marvel, Orphan Black, Hawkeye )

Miscellanea

As always, I have somehow ended up writing more about some of these fandoms than others – that doesn't mean that I prefer them over the others. I love all of these fandoms and would be delighted with fic for any of them.

If we've matched on a fandom that doesn't suit you, I've got a couple of short canons in my requests this year. Death by Silver is available DRM-free from Smashwords. And Stigmata is a movie that you're most likely going to find in the bargain bin because it's (omg) 13 years old. (It's pretty cheap on iTunes, too, which I know because all my DVDs are still in boxes, and I had to buy it to review canon.)

Dear Yuletideer (Yuletide deer?)

Welcome to my letter! This is a great time of year for fic writers, and I always look forward to the whole wild party that is Yuletide. I hope you have a great one!

Firstly, let me reassure you that this letter is completely optional. I'm the kind of writer who likes guidelines – lots of guidelines! – so I've put a whole bunch down to help you out, if that's the kind of thing you like, too. If you're the kind of writer who likes to freewheel, then ignore all of this, and be free! Write what your heart wants. That always makes for great stories.

I'm going to love it, whatever you decide to do. I promise.

Fandoms: Death By Silver, Dance Academy, Zodiac Cycle – art by Julie Dillon, Blood Ties, Agents of SHIELD, The Faraway Tree )

Miscellanea

I've written more about some of these fandoms, but please don't take that as an indication that I have a preference for one over another. I absolutely don't! They're all there because they're dear to my heart, and I'm happy with whichever you choose.

If you want more info, check out my Dear Author tag. I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina, if you're looking for my other fandoms or fic.

If we've matched on one of the larger fandoms, but you're not sure if you can write for that request, don't panic! I've got a couple of fandoms that are small and quickly absorbed:

Julie Dillon's Zodiac Cycle is a series of twelve pieces of art, available at Deviantart here: Zodiac Cycle.

Death By Silver is a single book, and you can get it DRM-free from Smashwords here.

Thank you so much for writing for me! I hope you have an amazing Yuletide.

Dear Yule-person,

Hello and welcome to my letter! I love Yuletide and I love you! But not in a creepy way, unless you signed up for Candle Cove, in which case, yeah, totally creepy and IT WAS YOUR REFLECTION ALL ALONG, thud drip drip drip.

Ahem.

My primary focus at Yuletide is that everyone has a good time. I ask you to respect my squicks listed below, but apart from that, all information in this letter is gravy – feel free to push it to the side of your plate if it's not to your liking.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not the no powers barista kind), crossovers, teamwork.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Miscellanea:
Two of my requests are for fandoms that are very short and easily absorbed – there's a movie, and a short story. So, if we've matched on Miss Fisher or Captive Prince and you're having second thoughts, try Candle Cove or Bram Stoker's Dracula.

There are more Dear Author letters at my Dear Author tag, on Livejournal or Dreamwidth. I'm at [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina, if you're wanting to check out my fandoms or my fic.

I've talked more about some of these fandoms than others, but that’s not an indicator of preference – I'd be equally thrilled by a story from any of my four fandoms.

Onto specific fandom requests!

Thank you so much for signing up! I love Yuletide, it's the absolute best thing about the holiday season. I hope you enjoy writing for me. I'm going to enjoy reading.

Hi [community profile] femslash12 author! I love this exchange! I hope it's fun for you, too.

This is a letter with optional details - I want to expand on my prompts, but if that's more information than you need, feel free to skim over.

What do I like? Lots of stuff! I love me some happy endings. I love plotty stories, I love porn with plot, I love friendship fic, and women having each other's backs. I like relationships, first kisses, friends with benefits, frenemies - I'm good with any kinds of relationships where both parties are equal. Crossover are LOVE. There's a list of my fandoms on my profile: faviconst_aurafina. Crossover at will - any of my requested fandoms, any time.

Not so much a fan of (as in, if the story calls for it, I can go there, but I tend to be wary of): angst, sad stories, jokes at a character's expense.

Definitely not a fan of (as in, please don't write if you can possibly avoid it): Incest, cross-gen, teacher/student, employer/employee.

I have a dear_author tag, if you'd like to read letters from past exchanges. You'll find them here on Dreamwidth or here on LJ.

My requests were a little light on the detail, so I've got some more information here if you'd like it.

Everything under here 100% optional! )

Dear Rarewomen writer!

Thank you for signing up for this ficathon! I'm really excited about this exchange, and all the fabulous characters that have been nominated. I think it's going to be lots of fun.

I want to say, first up, that I want you to have fun writing. I've written this letter with the intention that you'll take as much or as little from it as you need. I'm going to love whatever you choose to write - I love all the characters and fandoms I've requested, and seeing them in a story will be wonderful.

Things that I like:

I have a huge competency kink! Show me characters doing their jobs well, solving problems and negotiating the demands of work versus the expectations of home life and I will be in bliss. I love professional banter, people getting along with their team, jokes and ribbing while dealing with a crisis, team-bonding and hugs when the crisis is done.

I love world building, and the way people interact with their environment, and all the small, everyday things that go along with that, like being comfortable with technology or magic or people's special abilities. Use your telekenisis to hang out the laundry? Awesome.

I'm a fan of plot, so I love adventure stories and case-fic and monsters of the week. I'm more of a porn-with-plot person that a plot-what-plot person. Sex is fine, but I like my characters to be doing something while they're doing something, if you know what I mean.

Speaking of sex, I'm happy with femslash, I'm happy with het. I'm happy with gen. I'm happy with Bob. UST, ST, chatting and cuddling, it's all good. I like people that trust people, I like seeing how that trust works or how it was brought into being.

I like crossovers, AUs (as long as they're not the de-powered or non-magical kind), backstory, missing scenes, off-screen romps, happy endings. Lots of things.

Things I don't like so much:

It's probably not an issue with my prompts, but I'd rather say now that I'm personally not comfortable with cross gen, teacher/student or employer/employee relationships. Non-con or dub-con is not comfortable for me to read. Kink is fine, on the mutually negotiated level.

st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
Dear Yule-entity,

Thank you for signing up this year! I love Yuletide, even more than Christmas: the spirit of the exchange, the atmosphere of squee, the lavishing of attention on rare fandoms, the incredible surprise when you finally get your assignment.

You got me! Um. Don't fret, I'm easy to please! My primary concern is that you have fun writing this year, so I'll say this up front:

Whatever you write, I will love it. Don't even worry. You and I have a fandom in common; that's so awesome I'm already smiling about it.

Things I like:

World building. Expanding on the world we're given in canon. Exploration of the little details - what's out in the garden? How do they get to work each day? What's that little annoying thing they've always meant to do something about but they're so busy it keeps getting shunted aside until it suddenly becomes relevant in ways they could not have imagined! (Okay, that last one is a bit specific. It's more of an example than an suggestion.)

Plot! Big roller coaster plot that is full of surprises and dark tunnels! Tiny little bits of plot about what's for dinner. Incidental plot that gives the characters a chance to chat. Plot that's a big excuse for sexy fun times. I like my characters doing something while they interact with each other. It doesn't have to be epic, but I do like action better than talking heads.

Women! Female characters doing the Bechdel. Competent, confident women being awesome at their jobs. There's a reason I've got Miranda Zero and Mysterious Total Eclipse Woman and H G Wells on my list here: they go and do what has to be done, they exist independently of relationships with men, and they are believably capable at their chosen occupations. (Fair enough, I'm presuming a lot about Bonnie Tyler here, but she looks awesome to me, anyway.)

Diversity. Visibly queer characters, non-neurotypical characters, characters with different gender presentations. (Twin Peaks is here because it's the most non-neurotypical town on TV. Even though these things are sometimes played for laughs, it's so awesome to see people like me up there on the screen.)

Things I don't grok so much:

Sad endings, sorry. I'm a big old softie, and I like things to work out in the end, if possible. Or at least for character deaths to be kept to a minimum.

I'm not a fan of power dynamics like teacher/student or cross-gen relationships. If we've matched on fandoms because of, say, Audrey/Dale or Miranda Zero/Aleph, if you could keep their relationships at the mentor/friendship level, I'll probably be more comfortable reading.

I need more information!
Never fear! Here are my previous Yuletide letters:

Dear Junetide Author,

Sorry to make you wait a couple of days for your letter. But here it is, at last! I want to say first up that whatever you choose to write, I'm going to be delighted. My Dear Author letters tend to be heavy on detail, but they're meant as guidelines only. Take as little or as much guidance as you're comfortable. Bend them. If they don't suit your story-telling style, ignore them completely. I want writing this story to be as enjoyable a process for you as reading it will be for me.

So, how exciting is this? I've never taken part in an original fic exchange, and I think it's going to be amazing.

You can probably tell from my prompts that I love world building, and by that, I don't mean you need to build the whole world to show me how weird and wonderful the place is. I'm a small details kind of person. Let me see the mundane – what they eat, how it's cooked, where they buy their food. Their small and daily religious observations. What remedies they use when they get a pimple or the wallpaper comes away because of the damp. As I read this ordinary stuff, I'm building the world for you in my own head, and that's an enjoyable process in itself.

Plotty stories float my boat. Big epic swathes of plot, tiny encapsulated plots where you only get to see one corner of what is probably a bigger story, porn with plot, or plot as the framework on which you hang an interesting conversation. Let the characters do something with their time on the page.

I adore, adore competent characters – people who can look after themselves, who know what their strengths and weaknesses are, and who know when to make a strategic retreat. I'm not looking for superstars – the best characters have flaws and can be trapped by those weaknesses – but characters who can quietly get on with the job and save the day.

Give me female characters who have self-determination, in worlds where it's not remarkable or unexpected that they would make decisions about the path of their own lives. Ditto for queer characters. You don't have to write a queer character if that's not your preference, but if you can make queerness visible and accepted in your world, I will be very happy. By queerness, I'm talking about sexualities and gender presentations, as well as relationship dynamics. I also love different body types, and I love different ways of thinking. Non-neurotypical characters who have functional, happy lives and relationships. I love multicultural societies, I love learning about a character by seeing their culture.

Dear Yule Fairy

Thank you so much for signing up, thank you for sharing a small fandom with me, and thank you for writing! I am easy going. These likes and dislikes are guidelines, and as such, they're bendy. Bend them freely!

Things I like:

- Plot! Big, loopy, twisty plots that mess with canon, tiny side plots that happen off-scene, a wee bit of plot while the characters have a chat, or PornWithPlot. I like stuff that happens.
- World building, letting me see a little bit of the universe that the canon hasn't shown us yet. I am that person who wants to look around the corner, see what's going on behind that door.
- Backstory. Origin stories, where canon relationships began.
- Characters – especially female characters – being utterly competent and professional at their work.
- Banter, fun conversations, people who are comfortable enough with their world that they can joke and tease while they're saving the world.
- People in extraordinary worlds doing ordinary things. People with exceptional abilities doing mundane things. (Yeah, so, tomorrow we're going to stop the apocalypse. Tonight? Pizza!)
- Crossovers, especially where one world meshes with another.
- Alternate universes and what ifs
- Female characters with agency, who are more than plot devices for the hero of the story.
- Queerness. Diversity. Places where the default isn't straight/white/male, or if it is, that default is recognised as problematic.

Things I don't like so much:
- Student/Teacher. It's a perfectly valid trope, but it squicks me on a personal level. I don't think it's likely, based on my selections, but just in case.
- I generally prefer a happy ending. That said, if it's right for your story, write what you need to. I have big girl panties. I can use them to dry my eyes.
- Vanishing or vilifying canon partners to facilitate your preferred pairing.

If it's helpful, here's a link to my past Yuletide letters. Going backwards in time!

Thank you for volunteering to write, and for choosing fandoms that we both share. I love the spirit of the Yuletide exchange, and I want this to be fun for you to take part in, so let me say up front: whatever you write, however you view the canon we obviously both love, I will be happy. If none of these requests suit you, show me something that you've enjoyed writing and I will be happy too. These guidelines are just that – meant to give you ideas, not meant to box you into one way of seeing things. Take as little or as much as you like from this letter – do enjoy the process of writing.

I'm an easy-going reader – I read gen, het, slash and femslash. I like missing scenes, past and future fic, stories that show me more of the world. I love good stories, plotty romps and fun adventures, I love conversations and moments of closeness, I love UST and fully resolved ST. I love characters sitting around and having a good old chat over tea.

If it's any help to you, here are my past Yuletide letters (has it really been three years?):
Yuletide 2006
Yuletide 2007
Yuletide 2008

Here's a bit more on the specific requests. Quite a bit more. Here's the bit where I go on and on. And on. Please don't feel obliged to incorporate everything I talk about under this cut.

Dear Yuletide Being!

First of all, thank you! It's a scary thing to volunteer to write a story for a person you most likely don't know, in fandoms that seemed like a really good idea at sign-ups, but now you're a bit uncertain about. Be at ease! I want you to have as much fun as possible. Whatever you write, I'm going to love it.

My darkest desires revealed: Constantine, Lord John Grey, Sadlers Wells and Strictly Ballroom )

If we only have one fandom in common, and it's something you've suddenly realised you don't want to write, two of my nominations are movies: Strictly Ballroom and Constantine. They're quick to absorb and easy to get hold of, and definitely not very heavy going.

Last of all, thank you! Thank you for taking part in this mad, fun exchange. I hope you have a great time.

Hello, mysterious author!

These are just some vague and rambling guideline to help you out, please feel free to disregard them. If you're the kind of writer who needs to know more, though, here's a brief explanation of my likes and dislikes, as well as what I love about the fandoms and pairings I nominated.

More of a guideline, really )

Dear Masked Author,

Thank you for taking on my request! You're clearly a philanthropist of the highest order.

First of all, I want to make your job as easy as possible. I'm thrilled that you're going to write a story set in one of the four fandoms I requested, and I'm not too fixated on you holding true to the letter of the request itself. Those requests? Are more like guidelines. If your muse takes you to a different place, feel free to extemporise, bring in characters I haven't mentioned, create pairings that I couldn't imagine. Please, have fun.

I'm an easy-going reader - I'm happy to read gen, het, slash, femslash, pretty much any permutation between characters that you can cook up. I love plot, even in the fluffiest of smutty pieces. I love happy endings, fairy-tales, mythological references. I'm a sucker for the small details - show me more of the world that the characters move in, and I will be in raptures.

I do have squicks, and these are they: adult/child pairings, non-consensual sex and non-canon character death. It would be great if you could avoid these.

My fandoms. Let me show you them. )

I want to thank you again for taking on this challenge - I'm so excited that there will be fic set in one of these worlds, and can't wait to read what you create.

Wishing you a cool Yule,

Just wanted to say hello! *waves* I guess you're going to be an X-Men fan, it's the only fandom that I've written enough fic in to qualify for Remix this year. There's lots of odds and ends from other fandoms there too, mostly drabbles, but things that I've put down with the hope of expanding on them someday. Maybe. One of these days. I'm pretty relaxed about that sort of thing.

The other thing I'm relaxed about is the remix process - take my fic, pound it into another shape, change any details you like, change the meaning, change the plot, change the setting, change the peoples' heads around like Barbie dolls. I'm really intrigued at the idea of you secretly pawing through my fic, (that sounds filthier than I meant it to, actually), and I'm looking forward to the end result. I don't have a safe story - everything I have written is up there to plunder.

The link's in your email, but here it is again, all my fic: in my LJ, tagged imaginatively as fic.

A message to my Yuletide Santa )

As for my assignment? There's something there I can write, and it's something I've been kind of wanting to write for a while. I can totally do it! I'm scared! But I can do it! And tonight I'm going to bed with the canon material! That's not meant to be as dirty as it sounds... *dances nervously*
