State of cat:
BAGGINS IS A FREE ELF! He's off sub-q fluids, he's got, as far as vets could tell while he was fully perfused, good renal function and low CK, and seems fit to make a full recovery from the snake bite. We are very lucky. So very lucky. Now we need to build him up and get him well, but he's doing a lot of that work himself, as cats do (MOSTLY BY JUMPING ON THE KITCHEN BENCH TO LOOK FOR HUMAN FOOD GRRR.) We think we found the site of the original bite - back right leg - because the skin got pink and raw there, but it's healing up. And as the vets said he would, he's doing his own physio, working on those damaged muscles in his wheel and playing with his brother. He's the best of cats. Champion of cats. Most cat of cats. <3

State of me:
Prednisolone is a beast, and it's slowly frying my brain, so I'm currently resorting to pink wine in the early afternoon. I'm not at work or anything, so I feel like that's a valid decision.

My concentration window has been appalling so I've barely read any Yuletide, beyond my wonderful gift fics, which has been sad-making because I love the process of reading and reccing and commenting. I'm hopeful that as the pred dose drops, my ability to get my eyes to stick to the screen will improve. I've got a doctor's appointment upcoming where we can review the rate of decrease and make some kind of long term plan. In the meantime, I'm average four-five hours of sleep a night, getting up at 5:30 with a weird unfocused mania that has me running around the house ~doing things and ~making plans. And crochet. Crochet is a life-saver at the moment. I still have knees, though right knee is making a whispered reappearance on the pain scale, possibly because I'm doing as much movement while I still can.

State of the Yuletide:

Dear SSR author,

This is exciting! Thank you for loving Agent Carter, and for creating a fanwork for me.

I love Agent Carter for the spy shenanigans, for Peggy and a whole bunch of awesome women, and for the part it takes in building the MCU. More Marvel world building is a good thing.

I am pretty easy-going when it comes to creative exchanges – I have always loved what has been created for me, and I think that this process of coming together to celebrate a show that we all love is amazing.

I've nominated mostly femslash or gen relationships, but when it comes down to it, I'm happy with gen, het or slash. I do prefer stories with queer presence, so if you prefer to write Peggy as straight, I'd love some of the other characters or OCs to be not-straight. I haven't nominated all characters, but I'm happy to see any of the cast appear in the story. I'm particularly fond of the push-and-pull friendship between Howard and Peggy, for example. And I love Rose, whom I suspect actually runs the LA SSR office. If you're the kind of person who likes to throw easter eggs into your fic and pull from other sources, I'm a Marvel comics fan, I'm up to date with Agents of SHIELD, and I've seen all the MCU movies except for Ant Man.

My requests are meant to be guidelines for the kind of story I like, and to provide inspiration. I'm not in anyway fixated on the specific of the prompts, so if your idea takes you in a different direction, please follow your heart.

Peggy/Dottie, Dottie and Natasha, Peggy/Dottie/Violet, Michael and Peggy, Bernard the Flamingo )

I don't have a preferred prompt or pairing! I know I've written more about some than others, but that's as it came to me while I wrote this letter. Please know I love them all, and I would be equally delighted if you were to use any of them.

Dear Yule-person,

Hello and welcome to my letter! I love Yuletide and I love you! But not in a creepy way, unless you signed up for Candle Cove, in which case, yeah, totally creepy and IT WAS YOUR REFLECTION ALL ALONG, thud drip drip drip.

Ahem.

My primary focus at Yuletide is that everyone has a good time. I ask you to respect my squicks listed below, but apart from that, all information in this letter is gravy – feel free to push it to the side of your plate if it's not to your liking.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not the no powers barista kind), crossovers, teamwork.

Plot! Big sweeping plot, small canon-compliant plot, things for the characters to do while they're snarking at each other, things going on around them while they're getting it on. I like stuff to happen.

Competence! I have a huge competence kink. I love seeing people being really, really good at stuff. I love lateral thinkers and characters who follow their instincts and people putting their skills to use in unexpected ways.

Ladies! BAMF female characters who don't have to bring other female characters down to be BAMFs. Mothers and sisters and girlfriends and girlfriends and wives. Women with agency. Women treated with respect.

Things that I don't like as much (but can handle if the story takes you there):
Sad endings, character death, angst, embarrassment.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Miscellanea:
Two of my requests are for fandoms that are very short and easily absorbed – there's a movie, and a short story. So, if we've matched on Miss Fisher or Captive Prince and you're having second thoughts, try Candle Cove or Bram Stoker's Dracula.

There are more Dear Author letters at my Dear Author tag, on Livejournal or Dreamwidth. I'm at [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina, if you're wanting to check out my fandoms or my fic.

I've talked more about some of these fandoms than others, but that’s not an indicator of preference – I'd be equally thrilled by a story from any of my four fandoms.

Onto specific fandom requests!

Candle Cove, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Captive Prince, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries )

Thank you so much for signing up! I love Yuletide, it's the absolute best thing about the holiday season. I hope you enjoy writing for me. I'm going to enjoy reading.

Hi [community profile] femslash12 author! I love this exchange! I hope it's fun for you, too.

This is a letter with optional details - I want to expand on my prompts, but if that's more information than you need, feel free to skim over.

What do I like? Lots of stuff! I love me some happy endings. I love plotty stories, I love porn with plot, I love friendship fic, and women having each other's backs. I like relationships, first kisses, friends with benefits, frenemies - I'm good with any kinds of relationships where both parties are equal. Crossover are LOVE. There's a list of my fandoms on my profile: faviconst_aurafina. Crossover at will - any of my requested fandoms, any time.

Not so much a fan of (as in, if the story calls for it, I can go there, but I tend to be wary of): angst, sad stories, jokes at a character's expense.

Definitely not a fan of (as in, please don't write if you can possibly avoid it): Incest, cross-gen, teacher/student, employer/employee.

I have a dear_author tag, if you'd like to read letters from past exchanges. You'll find them here on Dreamwidth or here on LJ.

My requests were a little light on the detail, so I've got some more information here if you'd like it.

We watched the first part of the pilot episode for SGA tonight, and something clicked. I think, maybe this time, I'll be able to get into it? Like, finally. Still, it's weird to know all the characters from porn I've read. I'm prepared to recognise half the cast from Sanctuary - hey, Carson Beckett is Terrence Wexford! I'm not sure if he's prettier with or without a frill neck.

I have new glasses, new orthotics, a new software system at work (that one was hard work), and I'm going to two different aqua-aerobics classes a week now. I think I'm starting to level out, mental health wise, which is nice. I have an appointment with a new psychologist at the end of May. I feel like some kind of self-improvement project. The night before last, I had this amazing dream, where I sat by a fireplace and chatted with Sue Perkins, which doesn't sound like much, but it was really relaxed, and not at all like my dreams of late. But you know, any time Sue Perkins wants to drop by my dream for more than a chat, I have no complaints.

The Rarewomen archive is open, here. I wrote two fics:

Human Behaviour (G, Doctor Who, the TARDIS and Idris, with cameos by Ace, Leela, Tegan and Nyssa, and the Seventh and the Eleventh Doctor.)

and Happy New Year, (G, Doctor Who, Jo Grant and Mickey Smith)

(I'll probably post them to my journal tomorrow, for completeness, so apologies in advance for the spamination.)
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
Everything was fine with [personal profile] lilacsigil's scan: more details here, but basically it seems that it was nothing to be worried about. Just incredibly weird. I take that back, it's not weird. There's a good explanation: it's possible related to the radioactive iodine, which can possible trigger this kind of reaction, but we're still waiting for the specialist to get back to us on that one.

I am flat-out exhausted, to the point where I can't actually speak words coherently. (And spelling is rapidly falling under the bus.) But [personal profile] lilacsigil is okay. Thanks to everyone for the back-up.

And dear [personal profile] zopyrus who wrote my [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen fic, I'm sorry, I'm a really slow reader when I'm tired! So far, I am adoring what you've written! And when I can hold my eyes open for a bit longer, I will be looking forward to finishing it.

(The fic is The Sapphire of Rassilon, and so far, it is an awesome Doctor Who/opera romp and I am enjoying it mightily.)
st_aurafina: (DW: Ace umbrella)
Dear Rarewomen writer!

Thank you for signing up for this ficathon! I'm really excited about this exchange, and all the fabulous characters that have been nominated. I think it's going to be lots of fun.

I want to say, first up, that I want you to have fun writing. I've written this letter with the intention that you'll take as much or as little from it as you need. I'm going to love whatever you choose to write - I love all the characters and fandoms I've requested, and seeing them in a story will be wonderful.

Things that I like:

I have a huge competency kink! Show me characters doing their jobs well, solving problems and negotiating the demands of work versus the expectations of home life and I will be in bliss. I love professional banter, people getting along with their team, jokes and ribbing while dealing with a crisis, team-bonding and hugs when the crisis is done.

I love world building, and the way people interact with their environment, and all the small, everyday things that go along with that, like being comfortable with technology or magic or people's special abilities. Use your telekenisis to hang out the laundry? Awesome.

I'm a fan of plot, so I love adventure stories and case-fic and monsters of the week. I'm more of a porn-with-plot person that a plot-what-plot person. Sex is fine, but I like my characters to be doing something while they're doing something, if you know what I mean.

Speaking of sex, I'm happy with femslash, I'm happy with het. I'm happy with gen. I'm happy with Bob. UST, ST, chatting and cuddling, it's all good. I like people that trust people, I like seeing how that trust works or how it was brought into being.

I like crossovers, AUs (as long as they're not the de-powered or non-magical kind), backstory, missing scenes, off-screen romps, happy endings. Lots of things.

Things I don't like so much:

It's probably not an issue with my prompts, but I'd rather say now that I'm personally not comfortable with cross gen, teacher/student or employer/employee relationships. Non-con or dub-con is not comfortable for me to read. Kink is fine, on the mutually negotiated level.

Since this is an exchange spawned at Yuletide, I've got my Dear Yuletide Author letters rounded up here:

Feeling a lot better after venting about therapy, thank you everyone. The decision I've come to is to go to the next (and possibly last) appointment armed with greater understanding of her technique. If I don't walk out of that room feeling 100% reassured, I'll be looking for someone else. Which is a bummer, but less of a bummer than how I feel lately.

In the mean time, while I'm plotting out [livejournal.com profile] fivetimesbb (Working title: Five Times the Warehouse Called on the Sanctuary), I'm also ogling [community profile] queer_bigbang (which seems to be based on the principles of [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest, so, about the experience of being queer.) As well as that, I'm checking out the nominated characters at [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (nominations post here!)

And, because I'm a champion multi-tasker, I'm watching Sue Perkins on youtube. When I'm sad, I watch her conducting the theme for The Simpsons on Maestro, a BBC reality show that took celebrities and taught them to conduct an orchestra. AS YOU DO.

I don't know if anyone outside the Commonwealth ever got these weird gothic anthologies of horror stories, where the creepy schoolboys are conducting bizarre rituals in the gymnasium and nobody but the new teacher notices? It was a fairly relaxed kind of NaNo. I would highly recommend fanwork if you're unsure about original fic in NaNo; I found it a lot of fun to just dive into a fandom and write whatever the hell I wanted to.
My final breakdown:
25K of Sanctuary fic
20K of Valdemar
5K of sequel to my Harry Potter/Doctor Who crossover that I've been meaning to write for many years.

*dusts hands* Now, on to the editing. *tragic sigh*

Secondly:
I post my [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang on the 11th, zomg. I have edits for that, I'm betaing another, I've got two fanmixes to put together. And then there's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide coming up.

Which reminds me, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking is a fantastic gift fest run by [personal profile] medie, wherein you create a wishlist here, and the head elf hangs your stocking, then people fill it with goodies. I love writing for this one, it's so much fun to post your fic or graphics or good wishes, and then around the 6th of January, everyone gets to check their stocking.

Thirdly!

[livejournal.com profile] fivetimesbb is for writers to create a fic for het, gen, femslash or slash in whatever fandom or crossover they desire. The catch here is that your story will take some form of the "Five Times..." format. Whether that means five chapters, five apocalypses, five hook-ups, five items or any variation on the theme is up to you.

There's three different levels of commitment, 2-5K, 5-10K and 10K plus. It's going to be lots of fun. Go, sign up!

I made the banners! There's more here, and if anyone is willing to promote for their fandom, I'll make a banner for it. Please. Save me from the editing. (Can't sleep, comma splices will eat me.)
