st_aurafina: (Birthday)
Happy birthday to [personal profile] lost_spook and [personal profile] lurkingcat, and a belated happy birthday to my nearly twin, [personal profile] muccamukk. And happy birthday to me. I had a quiet day: transplanted some lettuce seedlings into the greenhouse, did some crochet, watched the Eurovision final on delay via Youtube. I got an almond milk hot chocolate when we went out for our daily pokestop visit. I made myself a Black Tapes icon:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It was nice. And less stressful than many other birthdays I have shared.

I've sent my snippets away to [community profile] wipbigbang for the Person of Interest Sentinel/Guide fic. I wrote a summary and chose a title. I've got a W13 fic in second beta right now, so hopefully I can post that next week. I'm nearly caught up on getting my [community profile] fandom_stocking fics posted here. I got something in for [community profile] iconthat's current challenge. I'm doing stuff. It's a good feeling.

And I think I'm ready to close comments at my LJ.
st_aurafina: The Winter Soldier wearing a mask and showing his metal arm (Marvel: Winter Soldier)
Still haven't moved. Send help and reinforcements. The real estate agent has a tenant lined up for our old place; she keeps knocking on the door to ask when we'll be vacating so we can lease the house. IDEK. At least it won't be sitting empty. At least it's rentable without major renovations (and at least this tenant is willing to move in while the not so major renovations are done.)

I survived my major dental appointment by having a panic attack on the Sunday beforehand that was so intense and so horrifying that two hours of crown work was nothing to fear in comparison. The panic attack wasn't even to do with the the dental appointment - it was my mother's birthday on Sunday, and when I went to text her, I had to scroll and scroll to find our last communication, which was in January - hence panic attack and waves of self-loathing that far outweighed my fear of dentistry. I do not recommend this as a method of dealing with dental phobia. I feel like a piece of fruit leather at the bottom of a schoolbag. But the temporary crown is in and the next appointment is not so arduous. OR SO THEY TELL ME. /dire looks

Tinee media review:

- Doctor Who: tentatively enjoying it on the proviso that I read no negative reviews and allow myself to soak in a syrupy non-critical solution of self-care while watching it. A new Doctor is always a treat, in that assorted chocolates way. I don't really know what Twelve is like yet, but I'm pretty sure he's not a soft-centre. (OMG where is this analogy going? I release my grip on sanity! Let it go!)

- Reign: Watched the first two episodes and really, really enjoyed them. It's like, history on crack with fancy dresses and ooooh, boys, and lots of girls hugging.

Tinee linkspam:

- Seriously adorable crochet pattern: Crochet a baby Groot (warning for animated gif)

- Somewhat underbaked science that nonetheless rang true for me and my many hearing problems: Middle ear may hold answers for autism treatment (Warning for discussion of familial abuse)

- H/T to [personal profile] cofax7 for this one: The Most Amazing Lie in History (I feel like I want some kind of Peggy Carter encounter with this guy. Maybe Judy Dench's M can be in it, too. She must have been pretty deadly in WWII.

- Misty Copeland will be performing Swan Lake in Australia - this photo from her instagram is just beautiful. I love the strength and compassion on her face - I usually find Odette a bit mimsy, but this is amazing. (Eeeeeh, using facebook to embed from Instagram to my journal - this is a little too close to crossing the streams, if you ask me.)

Instagram clearly too evil - am hotlinking like a crime lord )

- I wish this scene had been in the Winter Soldier: This Is What Hawkeye Was Going To Do In Captain America: The Winter Soldier

- Speaking of Winter Soldier, [personal profile] famira has made a trillion textless icons from the movie: all under their Captain America tag. Go snaffle them up!

Since my last post, I've mostly been reading comics: re-reading Captain America's Winter Soldier arc, also Young Avengers (omg Miss America! Amerikate foreva!), Ms Marvel (omg the latest team-up killed me with the adorability).

Also made a bunch of icons suddenly and out of the blue: some Doctor Who, some Young Avengers which are, admittedly, 90% America Chavez )

And that's all there is. There isn't any more.
st_aurafina: woman in a tweedy jacket (Miss Fisher: Mac)
Brain is still holding steady, despite the rigours of Mother's Day and my birthday coming right after it. (Happy birthday to the three other fangirls I know born on the fourteenth: [personal profile] eumelia, [personal profile] lurkingcat and [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook.)

My plans for today were to get up at a reasonable hour (done!), cook beef stroganoff (in the oven, but I'm worried it's too salty, so I put a couple of potatoes in to soak it up while it's slow cooking), and clean the microwave (yet to be achieved has been done in the interim, yay!)

I thought I had bookmarked some lists of the best SGA episodes for newbs but I can't find them. Anyone know of any? I want to push through and try to keep watching while I'm feeling enthusiastic (and a lot of my regular shows have stopped or are about to stop.) I know that it's one of those shows where fandom enthusiasm possibly outweighs actual canon, but I'm used to that kind of thing. (Sixth Doctor fan, me.)

And I made some Mac icons, because looking at Mac's face is a fun thing to do while you're waiting for stroganoff to cook. (From Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and totally snagable)

I have my assignment, it's sparking all kinds of ideas, and it's going to be so much fun. I am excite.

A little while ago, there was this gorgeous post on [livejournal.com profile] aiyatheydidnt, with Fan Bingbing dressed as a man, and that's kind of my thing, so I made some icons:

st_aurafina: Dame Maggie Smith in a fabulous hat (Downton Abbey: Cousin Violet)
So far, I haven't missed a day yet, even if the icons are just basic crops and polishes. It's nice to be getting familiar with Photoshop again, even if the buttons seem really, really small and I have to squint and lean forward to choose brushes.

Fruits of my labours, mostly for my records, though you're welcome to take something you like.

I'm still taking prompts or requests, too. Show me a cap or an image, give me a phrase, and I will try to icon it the best I can.
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (exotic and beautiful)
I made a new glam, girly icon from scans here at [livejournal.com profile] foto_decadent. I really liked this image, but I couldn't make a crop where the model's shoulder didn't look weird and square. Then I realised that her shoulder was weird and square, poor thing.

I have a dentist phobia. See this doll? I have dreams like that, where I'm in the dentist chair and I'm screaming and trying to get away but I can't move. See how she can never close her mouth? She is doomed to scream and scream silently for ever. For I while, I thought that lucid dreaming techniques would help, but instead, when I told dream!dentist that I knew this was a dream, he'd tell me that I was wrong, and push me back into the chair. So I try not to do that any more.

OMG! Giant Moose! Do you know what's really weird about a giant moose you can walk around inside? Putting little moose statues inside it. It hurts my brain - are there little people inside the moose inside the moose? Does it go on forever? I think our tiny town needs a giant attraction. Maybe a giant wombat.

This morning, when I was making a salad for my lunch, I dropped a punnet of cherry tomatoes on the floor. I thought I got them all and would be able to keep this embarrassing clumsiness a secret, but [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil found the cats rolling a stray tomato around with their noses. Cute, but incriminating.

I have one chapter to write for NaNo, maybe a chapter and an epilogue. Then, when I've finished, I'm going to play The Sims for like, twenty hours, and then I'm going to sleep for three days.
st_aurafina: (Ironman stark)
I'm having one of those days where you stare at the wall and then five hours just vanish. But I did screencap the Iron Man trailer, then I made a bunch of bases from the caps.

Some awesome things that I read this week:

Matt Murdock/Foggy Nelson: Woobie Young Lawyers in Love, by [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon
Written for [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto, this is wonderful round-up of canon that details the relationship between Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson. There's spoilers for the current run of Daredevil, up to issue 93. If you've ever had a passing interest in Daredevil, and wondered if you should be reading the comic, this is a great introduction to two of the most important characters.

All in the Valley of Death Rode the Six Hundred, by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
This ficlet looks at Tony Stark dealing with the aftermath of the incident behind Marvel's big cross-over event, Civil War. This has spoilers for the first issue only, and shows Tony starting down the road that ends up dividing the super-hero world, and it offers more explanation for Tony's unpopular position than you get to see in Mark Millar's writing.

I made myself an Iron Man icon, because I'm hopeful that I'll be needing it more in the future. I haven't made an icon post for ages (I haven't had much time for fooling around with photoshop, sadly), so I've cleared out the random bits and pieces that I've been accumulating in my photobucket. There's some Iron Man, Daredevil, Torchwood, and X-Men icons here. And there's a few racy icons here too - so don't click if nipples or corsetry are disturbing to you.

st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Mystique Bishop)
I got an emergency appointment at the dentist after all. They called me with a cancellation, and the next two hours passed in a blur as we scrambled to get there, and then had my tooth probed and poked and filled. I cried, as usual, but they know that's going to happen, and I needed extra anaesthetic, and there were still parts of the old filling that had to be drilled out, and it was all pretty nasty, but it's done now. The dentist suggested that as it's my TMJ tooth-grinding side, I should get a crown on it next year while there's still some tooth left. *sigh* I'm nearly forty, I have to start thinking about the longevity of my teeth, or it will be bread pudding and soup in my sixties.

I guess it's a good thing, in the long run, that I didn't score a pinch hit for Yuletide, because I'm still a bit woozy and achey from the sedation and the dental work. They went so quickly, too! Next year, I won't wibble about whether I'll be able to write the request, I'll just pounce on the one I want.

We have Christmas carols playing at work today. I find carols a bit depressing, and yet I cannot stop downloading them whenever I find them online. So many Christmas albums, but all the same songs. And one weird album that seems to be all saxophone.

We have the sci-fi channel now - I love it! I saw SGA! Well, it was fifteen minutes of SGA, but it was amazing how many of the characters [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil and I could identify.

"That's Rodney, he's part of McShep," I said knowledgeably.

"That's Teyla," said [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil, "She's an alien chick. And that's Elizabeth - more people should write fic about her."

And then they all had to go to what I presume was the Gate Room, but which sounded awfully like the Gay Room. And the episode was over.

Check this out: [livejournal.com profile] chambrexplosion made a chess board with my X-Men chess icons from the other day. It looks great.
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
It's been a while since I made an icon post. This is a set of chess pieces based on X3 caps, one set for the X-Men, and one for the Brotherhood.

Um. Not many icons, considering I held August over till the end of September. I'm back to entering icontests now, so there should be more icons in the October post. There's some X-Men, some Firefly, some POTC for DMC which I still haven't even seen; I should just give up now and start reading fic. There's also, inexplicably, some Hellblazer icons. John Constantine, I am your bitch.

Icons made from August through September )
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
I had to wait while a couple of icontests finished up before I posted my icons from July. Last month I set myself some goals, which I more or less ignored. Not only did I not enter any Harry Potter icontests, I didn't make a single HP icon. Experimenting (with more radical cropping, using little pictures inside big pictures, changing the angle of text) is SCARY. It's very reassuring to scamper back to my comfort zone of bright colouring with a nice frame.

Just making an icon resource post, so I can keep all these details in a post, rather than in my user-info. It's not very interesting. More for my own filing, really, and for crediting icon resource makers.

I'm trying to post the icons I've made at the end of each month, mostly as a record of what I've made, and what I've learned. There's some Harry Potter icons, some Doctor Who, and a whole lot of X-Men icons. I've been entering a few icontests, which has been really good fun and a good learning experience. These icons are for sharing.

Lots more icons here... )
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (henry scholar)
First of July was the posting day for the art quilt swap I'm in, so for the last 10 days or so, I've been sewing and sewing and sewing. They're only tiny pieces as far as quilts go, this one was a 30cm square, but that means a lot of heavy embellishment, and working over. Plus I watercoloured the fabric, so there was extra preparation. Fortunately, every quilt I've had to work on this year has coincided with a major spots event: Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games and the World Cup. So [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil and I have been sitting and sewing, reading and watching television, with a laptop open each, and cats snuggled up to us. Bliss!

All the time I was sewing, I was wishing I could write as well, but now that I have free time to write, my brain is a little mushy. Maybe this weekend I'll have better luck.

Surprisingly, when I look back at the icons I made for June, there's a lot. I made many more icons than I thought. I really like the Henry one I'm using now. I love that he looks like a Victorian-era scholar, in profile. Also, I love Henry.

In signing up for the [livejournal.com profile] 1602ficathon, I have learned that it is much, much harder to make a request than I expected, maybe harder than filling a request. I'm worried about my requests, and how the person who will write them will feel. [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon sign-ups are up too now. (This is a suble pimp... Go and sign up, it's going to be lots of fun.)

What makes a good ficathon request? What should one avoid?

And to that crazy woman in the shop right now, if you keep winding up all the music boxes, I will make you eat one. And they are not small.

GIP!

st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (ker-chop!)
A little while ago, [livejournal.com profile] ion_bond posted some crack-tastic excerpts from X-Axis' list of flash backs within the X-Men comicsverse, here.

This was one:

X-MEN vol 1 #12, page 10 panel 6 to page 11 (flashback)
Charles brings yet another sports trophy back home. Cain flies into a jealous rage and starts to destroy Charles' trophies. Realising that Cain will attack him next, Charles subdues him with a martial arts chop.

[livejournal.com profile] scoured kindly uploaded scans of X-Men #12, from which I cropped out these two icons.

The karate chop thought bubble originally said "No normal foe stands a chance against a mutant who can read minds! You brought this on yourself!"
But "Ker-Chop!" was easier to read, and I think it expresses the same sentiment.

And I've deleted the thought bubble on the sporty one, because Charles just looks so serene as he sails past the finish line. It did originally say "This will be my last race! It's too easy for a mutant to defeat a normal man!"

GIP! There's such a lot of space on the Professor's head. It was so inviting!

I wrote Precious for the [livejournal.com profile] hp100 Horcrux challenge. I confused a few people with the use of "wizard" as an adjective, like "smashing" or "wicked", which is kind of disturbing, since I wouldn't have thought it an obscure word.

I've put the textless bases for my X-Men tarot icons into a html table, so I'll post them here. There's also some random icons from other fandoms, some Harry Potter, some Doctor Who, and some Sarah Blasko icons because [livejournal.com profile] theregoesyamum mentioned her and has been posting with an icon of her which has that hypnotic gaze. The numbering for the tables is a little eclectic. I'm not good with tables

Image heavy - might be a problem for dial-up. )
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
Where will it end? I wrote some drabbles using the tarot icons as prompts. Five of them. So that's five hundred of the six hundred words of fic I've ever written. I feel heady. It was fun, though a little nervewracking. [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil was kind and ruthless at the same time, which was very reassuring, and well beyond the call of duty considering she's actually fevered.

I posted them to [livejournal.com profile] xmmff. There's five drabbles, all gen, all 100 words.

0 - the Fool, Marie D'Ancanto )

II - The High Priestess, Dr Jean Grey )

IV - The Emperor, Scott Summers )

XV - The Devil, Pyro )

XVIII - The Moon, Jason Stryker )

Also, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's Harry Potter drabble-a-thon. It scares me a little. I could have to write anything.
