Answer (according to [personal profile] lilacsigil): Forgive Wesley for starting another virulent plague, then get it on with a Scottish ghost.

I'm wearing my swingy teal coat today, so I'm stealth cosplaying Doctor Crusher. Bring me my hypospray, baby needs a dose of tricordrazine.

Speaking of which, that fandom meme:
1. the character I least understand
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
3. the character who scares me the most
4. the character who is mostly like me
5. hottest looks character
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
7. one thing I like about my hated character
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
10. my ship that never sailed

Also, I must preserve the chatlog of the Person of Interest Crab AU. With images. Of crabs.

Yes, we can AU like champs. If only it was an Olympic sport )

So that happened, and now I will never forget Shaw the pistol shrimp.

Music meme:
2.A song you like with a number in the title
I really like 1,2,3,4 by Feist, but even more, I love this cover by Kiyomi Vella from The Voice Australia (S2). (Also, I am such a sucker for The Voice when the judges get really excited. Is it just me?)

1,2,3,4 by Kiyomi Vella )

Also, health FYI: flu vaccines are available in Australia (they were late coming and have been out of stock for a while.) If you're getting one this year, now is the time. If you have a chronic illness that puts you at higher risk of complications from influenza, like asthma, kidney disease, or if you're immunocompromised, you get it for free.

I had the quadrivalent and it gave me no trouble. ([personal profile] lilacsigil had it too, and her arm looked like it got punched by Shaw the pistol shrimp.)

I'm still trying to catch up on posting fic to my Dreamwidth. As I go, I'm trying to post to a comm or two as well, because that's where DW falls down a bit, I think - there aren't as many active comms as there were on LJ. Some really, really active ones! But not as many.

Speaking of which, is there a place I could post my Black Tapes genfic? A general fandom genfic comm? I couldn't find a specific Black Tapes comm, but in searching, I did find that there's an option for DW to add that topic to your interests. (Which is awesome.) And then through that, I found [community profile] addme_fandom, which is like [community profile] addme, but fannish.

Meme with me? (as seen everywhere, probably because it's a good meme!)
Ask me:
1. the character I least understand

3. the character who scares me the most
4. the character who is mostly like me
5. hottest looks character
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character

8. a quote or scene that haunts me
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
10. my ship that never sailed

Also, from [profile] yohijideranged, a music meme!

1. A song you like with a colour in the title.
I have three, because how do you choose these things?
Under this cut: Birdy, Lorde, David Bowie )

Squids!

st_aurafina: Harold Finch's face (POI: Harold)
Insta Rec
I wrote a Supergirl fic of necessary hugs: Lights Will Guide You Home (Kara Danvers/Daisy Johnson, General) and guess what, [personal profile] monanotlisa wrote a beautiful and adorable coda for it: Hide Away in Daylight (Kara Danvers/Daisy Johnson, General) Everything is squishy hugs and nothing hurts.

The State of Me
Oh, man, I don't know if it's the prednisolone taper, but I'm so woozy and full of fogs. It might be that my GI tract got so inflamed that I couldn't absord oral meds, so now I'm basically re-establishing my Pristiq and other meds all at once? I'm foggy and I have a concentration window of about two minutes, and my balance is kind of fucked. Not very me at all. To be fair, my suffering is not great. But I feel like a balloon animal. Maybe a dachshund. Maybe a giraffe?

Oh, but [personal profile] lilacsigil has just come back from the street to tell me that the cafe that makes the great salt and pepper squid has it on their specials board today, so I am getting squiddy with my lunch. I have such fish cravings since I've been sick. Fish and nuts. All the oils. Get in my body, oils. And squids.

NaNo Round-up
I'm picking through the scattered debris of my NaNo adventure to see what actually happened in that weird month.

- Finished the POI Five Things fic, though one of the parts is decidedly odd with only some good bits. The good bits might sprout something better, though, so I shall see. Total word count: 31,767.
- Finished the POI Sentinel/Guide fic, though I think it needs some fleshing out in parts. I quite like this one, actually? It's iddy as all get out and has lots of hugging and touching and bonding. I think, once I've got my Yuletide sorted, I'll work on this one. Total word count: 16,229
- Wrote one chapter of the Bucky fic. It was a weird but necessary chapter. 7266 words, taking that fic to a total of 62,044, holy shit.
- The Supergirl fic of necessary hugs, which I've already posted. (2032 words)
- The POI fixit fic is where it got weird and throw-words-at-the-wall-ish. I'm a little scared to look. I had a fever. 13,828 words, some of which may not be consecutive or legible.
- Last minute desperation words, Harold Finch competence porn. 2602 words. I want to finish this, because it's fun, and because I like exploring Harold's hidden skillsets.

I something something made it to 50K in NaNo. I don't know why I didn't quit, and I don't know what I actually wrote, and what are words anyway? In the last desperate hours, I wrote some fic about Harold Finch feeding a kitten with an eyedropper.

I finished some stuff. I wrote some crack. I need to get onto Yuletide now.

1. I switched on cross-posting to Tumblr. I hope it works! (Totally inspired by [personal profile] muccamukk who is getting [community profile] femslashex organised for this year.) I already have cross-posting set up for [livejournal.com profile] comicstore_news but I want to be more integrated here.

2. [community profile] femslashex, a femslash exchange that is lots of fun! The new schedule is up, and nominations will open soon.

3. I did Camp NaNo. I wrote 30K of Person of Interest fixit fic. Now I must finish it. I'm starting to think I'm a serial non-finisher of long fics. (Would anyone be interested in Ameripicking?)

4. Imzy is a thing suddenly, and might be the next thing fandom moves to after Tumblr. It seems to have comments that thread, and a generally more friendly atmosphere, though there is some question about whether they'll allow NC-17 art works. (The answer from the creators right now seems to be yes for fanworks, no for pr0n, which might not make for the best fandom environment? But they're talking about it, at least.) My personal comm is here - that's what people seem to be doing, since you can't follow individual profiles just yet.

Some others I've followed:

fail_fandom_anon
pokemongo (still very quiet)
misbehaving_muses (This is a place to vent, complain, or brainstorm when your muses refuse to cooperate.)
personofinterest (But I don't know if it's a fannish comm or what.)

And a few I found that other people might be interested in:

I'm torn on this whole new canon thing for Person of Interest, because on the one hand, we're getting massive plot advancement, but on the other, I really want them to go back to mid-S3, with Finch in the library, Reese and Shaw working numbers, and Root dancing around all of them in her chaotic way. I don't think we're going to get that, and I don't think it would be narratively satisfying if we did, but that part of the show is such a happy place for me. *clings*

Totally random Person of Interest fic recs:

Does It Lessen Your Affection? by JinkyO (Root/Shaw/the Machine, explicit)
Root with the Machine in her ear, weirdly hot voyeuristic sexy tiems.

Code Indigo by pendrecarc
Gen AU where Finch teams up with Shaw first up, instead of Reese. (It's an older fic, so she's Samantha Shaw, before we knew Sam = Sameen.)

a creature more of night than day by the_ragnarok (Explicit, Harold/John)
AU where Finch is a vampire. I KNOW OKAY, but he wrote a clause in the TOS of his software that grants him entry to houses, which is adorable and so in character. And I appreciate that attention to detail. ([personal profile] lilacsigil, yes, this is the one where he turns into tiny owls.)

Phoenix and the sequel, Halcyon by hedda62 (Explicit, Grace/Harold/John)
Harold has a really stupid idea, which I totally love, because he is so the kind of person to set his two most beloved people up with each other in the event that he's killed or whatever. I really love how Grace is written in this - strong and doing fine without Harold because she's able to look after herself, but so amazingly pissed off when she finds out what's been going on. And so kind to John.

but i'm not the girl you once put your faith in (just someone who looks like me) by violentdaylight (Explicit, Iris/John)
There's not a lot of Iris fic (and I'm always braced for the inevitable hate that a female character gets when she's perceived as the wedge that comes between a juggernaut m/m pairing) but this is Iris POV and it's awesome. (It's tagged as dubcon and d/s elements but that's very, very subtle. If you're not looking for it, or if you don't usually read kink fic, I think it's not going to bother you.)

So, apparently we get three episodes next week? I don't know how to deal. My body is nowhere near ready.

I went with fanfic, because I plain old ran out of time to plan the original fic properly. It's going okay? First week was wobbly, because things kept happening, but I'm on track now. For the time being.

W13 femslash for (belated) trope bingo: 5K
(How much fun is W13!! I love writing it! I had forgotten how much I love it.)
Sanctuary fic for (belated) trope bingo: 1K
Killjoys fic for for (belated) trope bingo: 2K
[Redacted fandom] for Yuletide treat: 8K
POI fic for no reason other than it pleases me: 3K

I didn't make the trope_bingo deadline, but I'll hopefully have something to post during the amnesty. I might even have a line. So that's a good thing.

I'm in the middle of the POI fic, that has somehow come out with Harold POV. Why? Why would I do this to myself? I'm not like Harold, and I know bugger all about computers, so I'm constantly having to look up terminology. This is why I like to write doctors and scientists. I can fake that stuff with some authenticity. Harold is a rod for my own back. (Still love him, though!)

My actual Yuletide prompt is a little intimidating but entirely doable. Just need some canon review. And some time for some canon review.

Writing:
[livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang is done and in editing. I've done the art. I based mine on a vintage condom tin.

This is the tin. It has a brief cameo in the fic, so I feel like it's basically relevant. )

I'm going to have a push at finishing a line for [community profile] trope_bingo before the deadline. I have one whole fic, and two halves of fics. I think it's worth the effort, anyway.

Then it will be NaNo, and I haven't decided if I'll do original fic or if I'll pants it with fic. Fic is easier, but I'm still sitting on 50K of Winter Soldier fic from 2014 which I'll probably post around, I don't know, 2020. I don't like having unposted backlog.

I have vague ideas on how to finish up The Victorian Boarding House of Together We Solve Crime. And if that's not enough to fill 50K, I could segue into the sequel, The Victorian Seaside Holiday of Together We Solve Crime. (My catchy titles!)

(This is me at nanowrimo.org)

My little sister sends me links to a facebook group that posts stuff from tumblr. It's weirdly recursive. Sometimes I send her stuff straight from tumblr, but I wonder if that's the internet version of drinking straight from the cordial bottle.

She's so great, though. She's done her final exam. (Please let it be her final exam, please let her decide not to go on to other things.) She asked if she could come down here for Christmas, which is lovely and wonderful, but it gives me faint quakes of terror regarding what the hell my family is doing if she is already planning her escape.

- Flowers for Memories was a crochet art installation at Yarndale 2015. I sent some flowers for their giant garden, and there are photos here. I can see mine!

- How difficult it is to shoot a lock off? Spoilers: pretty difficult

- Altoid tin watercolour palette. We don't have altoids or that brand of gum, but I think I could improvise. (Or you know, use a vintage condom tin!) And how great are those waterbrushes, with the water stored in the barrel? Pretty effing great, let me tell you.

- [livejournal.com profile] antarctic_sue is posting again! Daily photos from McMurdo. Some seals. Some weather balloons. Some science corridors. I like it.

- From [personal profile] conuly, Australia in British sign language. Etymology and sign language, differences between countries. The British signs for Australia are really interesting to me: one references convict transportation, the other our slouch hats (from contact with WWI Diggers, presumably?)

- From tumblr: Things I love about the Villain Turns Good trope. I love all of these things. I love that when you write, this is the payoff you get for building nuanced villains. I think about how often we see this in fic, and how rarely we see it in fiction. Right now, I'm thinking of comicsverse!Magneto and Zuko. Maybe it's the babycino speaking, but those two are the only ones I can think of. Oh, and Root. Yeah, Root, though I don't think she has the vulnerability and self-doubt that this talks about, not that either of those are a deal-breaker for me.

I'm pretty excited that I will be watching the next season of POI with all of you guys. Even if it's the last one - I got in on time.

Blurg, I have a cold, and I feel like I have a hairball at the back of my throat. I am displeased. I have been consuming copious amounts of tea with lemon. I bought lemons specifically, which makes me wonder how the lemon tree we planted at the old house is going. (We moved last September, for the new people.) It should be getting fruit, and so should the lime tree - ah, well.

[personal profile] lilacsigil planted another tree here at the new house but it will be a few years before we get anything. We've got bok-choy and baby broccoli in the garden beds right now and I've got rocket and spinach seeds coming in the mail, because our mini-greenhouse is all up and ready for baby plants. This is great, because the greens at the greengrocer are dire at the moment. It's going to be a race between seedlings and scurvy at this rate. (Not really, not with all the lemons I just consumed.)

Photos of the not-so-new garden beds )

Since I'm posting photos, this was my day today: rain and cows. So much rain. So many cows.

The oncoming storm... )

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang, even though I should be working on my Winter Soldier NaNo project so I can post it some time before the next movie comes out. It's already been horribly jossed by Agents of SHIELD's second season. (I'm tentatively looking for someone I can ask America questions, if there's anyone out there who'd be willing. Like, can you catch a bus from DC to New York if you're pretty sure that people are going to be monitoring airports and train stations? That sort of thing.)

Otherwise, we are both well, apart from sore throats and woolly heads. Hello again to the new people - I'm very glad to be getting to know you.
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
Footy season started, which means I get to sip my coffee and relax a bit at work. I don't like football much, but I'm grateful for slightly slower Saturdays. And coffee. Always grateful for coffee.

ETA: Apparently not football yet? IDK where are the people?

I have been in a bit of a slump, brain-wise, but I'm coming up out of it now. (I'm starting to see a pattern via my tumblr queue - I drop posting down to three per day because it's just too hard to keep that queue topped up, then slowly it fills up again as I have more concentration and energy. When I've got 100 posts in the queue, I up the rate to ten per day. It's an odd but definite pattern.)

Today is officially one year since we put the sticker on the sign for the new house. We've been in for six months. It's a lovely house for summer, as it turns out, and catches cross breezes beautifully. The veggie garden went in late, but we've had oodles of zucchini, peas and basil. Only one tomato, unfortunately. It was delicious but tiny.

Cooking has mostly revolved around zucchini, and the question of how we can get more zucchini into each meal. (Chopped and sauteed with garlic goes well into a toasted cheese sandwich, for example.) The Courgette tag at BBC Good Food has been a wealth of fun. Courgette and Orange cake was the recipe I made the most often, I think, though I make it with an orange glaze because [personal profile] lilacsigil doesn't like cream cheese icing.

Fannishly, I consumed much:

Agent Carter was beautiful and amazing and perfect for me, if not perfect overall. I hope, hope we get a second season. I hope I get a chance to contribute to viewing statistics in some way soon. (I furiously liked things on Facebook, for the little good that does.) I want to write fic. Dottie and Peggy and Angie fic. Le sigh. So many women. Plz come back, writing mojo.

Person of Interest S3 was this amazing blur of femslashy moments, and finally clicking with Reese, and loving all the dystopian AI storylines, and adoring Root in god-mode. And sad about Read more... ). I'd love recs for fic that's non-spoilery past the S3 finale, if anyone has any.

I am inspired by many gifs on tumblr to give The 100 a try again. Much femslash, actual queer content, wow.

But I've given Gotham the flick - it got too nasty. And spoilers )

The Great British Sewing Bee - I'm almost finished. Just the final to go. It was a great season!

The Comic Relief Bake-Off - there was this one amazing episode, with Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Lulu, and Dame Edna Everage. It was like the best episode of AbFab EVER. It was amazing. I love Comic Relief Bake-Off anyway, but this was unusually epic and amazing.

Broadchurch - I have no idea what made me suddenly watch this show - I'm not really fond of that particular style British grim crime drama. I think the small-town angle caught me. And Olivia Colman is ace balls. I'm in the middle of Season 2 right now (so much shirtless James D'Arcy, wow.) spoilers ).

So, anyway. This is me. I am here! And feeling better. And hopefully back to fic soon. I have a build-up of fic feelings.
st_aurafina: The Winter Soldier wearing a mask and showing his metal arm (Marvel: Winter Soldier)
Today was the first real scorcher of summer: 41 degrees C and an extreme fire risk. There was a nasty, scary fire in the north of the state, and a closer but smaller and better controlled one at Framlingham, but they're both coming under control as the evening rolls in. Our visitors went home yesterday, which was a wise choice. I wouldn't want to be on the roads today through the Otways, with the fire risk this high.

I don't really know how the new house behaves in the heat, but so far, with the shades down and the lights off, it seems to be holding at a nice temperature. The ceiling fans really help, too.

Fic for 2014:

I didn't write as much as I wanted to, but I did post two big bangs, both of which I'm really proud of.

64K words, but only 8 fics )

WIPs:

I've got 50K of Winter Soldier fic just waiting to be jossed by Agent Carter in a week or so. *le sigh* It's worth it for more Peggy canon.

OMG, I just found a file in my WIP folder, entitled "Warehouse 13 a/b/o plan". Um.

I honestly cannot remember this chat happening so I'm really glad I c&p'd it into a doc: )

This closet is full of awesome crap!! This was for... something Warehousey:

snippet: Five Times the Warehouse Called on the Sanctuary )

There's 3K of this, with pirates. Later, Helena murders someone with a vole.

TV and Movies:

Winter Soldier! Oh, man, I mean, I'd read the comics, and I liked the story, but the movie punched me in the feels big time.

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Surprisingly did not get fannish about this. I mean, I liked it. I loved it. But I did not write for it.

Person of Interest: We have inhaled two seasons, and are launching into the third. Love it! It took me a while to get into, and I still find Mr Reese deeply odd. I haven't investigated the fic department of this fandom, but do people write him as, like, the embodiment of the Machine? I find him easier to deal with if I can tell myself that somehow Finch built a walking, talking, empathy-impaired android. (Now I'm ear-wormed with a creepy Cliff Richard song.) Although we've just had the episode where Root identifies the Machine as female. But anyway, I strongly suspect I'm going to be all about Shaw/Root. Also I love Carter. Also I know what happens.

- Battlestar Galactica: I mainlined this while we were moving. I had to do it alone, because it's hellishly handheld and vertigo inducing, plus [personal profile] lilacsigil doesn't do apocalyptic fandoms. (Although I'll argue it becomes less apocalyptic in later seasons, though not less handheld.) One of the benefits of watching a show long after it has finished is being able to google for the really bad episodes and skip over them.

Oh, my love for the ladies of this show. Oh, my incredible crush on Katee Sackhoff's shoulders.

- Longmire: I'm midway through season 2. I started this for Katee Sackhoff (omg, she needs to be in it more, what a waste!) but I'm staying for Lou Diamond Philips. I did not honestly expect to enjoy it as much as I am. But it needs more ladies, lots more ladies. I can ship Walt/Henry with no difficulty, but I really need some lady ships.

- Sleepy Hollow. I would not have picked you as my DNF show this year. Seriously, what a freaking disaster you turned into. I am so sad for your clever, media-savvy actors who know the ship is going down.

- Doctor Who, you lost me when Twelve told Clara she was fat. What the actual fuck was that. Not that I won't keep coming back - I am always going to come back, it's a lifelong thing.

Ugh, that finished up depressing. I will cheer myself up by looking to the future. I am looking forward to Agent Carter. So very much. Please don't suck, please don't be gross and weird. I have The Librarians ready to watch as soon as my schedule settles down a little. Person of Interest Season Three is fun so far. *hugs self gently* It's okay, bb.

Comics

I was so glad to come back to comics this year! Not that I think the stupidity and grossness of the industry has lessened, but my volcanic rage at the stupidity and grossness has simmered down enough that I can now enjoy the good things.

Ms Marvel! So adorable, and so full of ridiculousness and glorious heroism.

Hawkeye. So unexpectedly droll, so unexpectedly leading me into using a smush name for a ship. America wasn't even in it, and yet I am team Amerikate.

Young Avengers. For the Amerikate!!

Loki: Agent of Asgard. I'm only six issues in, but it's awesome. (I am apparently supposed to read Journey into Mystery, but I remember when [personal profile] lilacsigil read the last issue and something SO AWFUL happened that she walked around the house randomly bursting into tears. So I'm never going to read that, because I don't do sad endings.)

Thor! I'm only two issues in, but I love lady!Thor! Also Malekith is walking around with dude!Thor's arm wrapped around his neck like a stole, and it's hilarious and camp. I feel like he'd be great on Project Runway.

I also did a re-read of the Winter Soldier arc in Captain America, because of my many feels about the movie.

Fic Read

I read and recced a lot this year, for me. *proud* Two standouts:

This, You Protect (64326 words) by owlet
Chapters: 33/33
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson (Marvel), Natasha Romanov, Tony Stark, Jarvis (Iron Man movies), Pepper Potts, Clint Barton
Additional Tags: Humor, I hope humor anyway, cursing, Protection, Strong feelings about coffee, slightly off-canon, Steve is sassy, sam is sassy, Bucky is sassy, Everyone has their sassy pants on, just accept that grilled cheese is the perfect food, old people are Team Bucky
Summary:

The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect

Ugh, it's over. *gross crying* Where am I going to get my pick-me-up now? A new chapter seemed to come just when I was feeling miserable or cranky. And now it's over. Which is great. But sad.

Life of Crime (35399 words) by neveralarch
Chapters: 8/8
Fandom: Marvel 616, Hawkeye (Comics)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Clint Barton, Clint Barton/Carol Danvers, Clint Barton & Kate Bishop, Kate Bishop/America Chavez, Barney Barton & Clint Barton
Characters: Clint Barton, Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes, Carol Danvers, Kate Bishop, Barney Barton, Maya Lopez, Steve Rogers, Tracksuit Mafia, Lester | Bullseye
Additional Tags: Deaf Clint Barton, Edgeplay, Consensual Kink, Polyamory, Supervillain AU, also lots of other characters and implied pairings but these tags were starting to get out of hand
Summary:

As a supervillain supercriminal contract worker with a morality deficit, Clint Barton leads a glamorous life. You know, stolen cars, dangerous women, a really confusing relationship with a meddling do-gooder, the works. It's pretty awesome. Except for, uh, medical bills, the mob, and being on the run all the time. That part isn't all that awesome.

(A supervillain AU where Clint shoots arrows at people and gets beat up a lot. So, not really that much of an AU.)

This is the one that brought me back to comics, so I really have to nominate it as the best fic I read this year. It's why I had to read Young Avengers and Hawkeye. I think I'm going to go re-read it now.

Yay, it's cooler here now, finally! And I have coffee jelly and vanilla ice-cream. And tomorrow is going to be slightly less scorching than predicted! 2015, you're not so bad, so far.
