st_aurafina: (NaNo: Sleep)

Final breakdown:
W13 femslash for (belated) trope bingo: 5041 (finished)
Killjoys fic for for (belated) trope bingo: 1873 (not finished)
Sanctuary fic for (belated) trope bingo: 1237 (finished)
[Redacted fandom for Yuletide treat]: 7868 (finished)
Sequel to You Can Never Go Home Again (my Tenth Doctor & Sirius fic): 11182 (finished but damn, I want to write more.)
Person of Interest fic for no reason other than it pleases me: 14740 (and not finished, will never be finished, omg had to take a break from it)
Supergirl/Daisy femslash for [community profile] femslash_kink: 2301 (finished and awaiting editing, to post soon)
NBC's Dracula which seems to be feudal lord/handmaiden Lucy/Mina with some Grayson in there, maybe Lucy/Mina/Grayson IDK: 5981 (so unfinished)
Total: 50,367

And didn't break my duolingo streak: 108 days.

And will get to comments soon, so soon.

But first cake. And sleep.

Brief discussion of workout matters, no weight loss talk, some swearing )

Nano goes:

I went with fanfic, because I plain old ran out of time to plan the original fic properly. It's going okay? First week was wobbly, because things kept happening, but I'm on track now. For the time being.

W13 femslash for (belated) trope bingo: 5K
(How much fun is W13!! I love writing it! I had forgotten how much I love it.)
Sanctuary fic for (belated) trope bingo: 1K
Killjoys fic for for (belated) trope bingo: 2K
[Redacted fandom] for Yuletide treat: 8K
POI fic for no reason other than it pleases me: 3K

I didn't make the trope_bingo deadline, but I'll hopefully have something to post during the amnesty. I might even have a line. So that's a good thing.

I'm in the middle of the POI fic, that has somehow come out with Harold POV. Why? Why would I do this to myself? I'm not like Harold, and I know bugger all about computers, so I'm constantly having to look up terminology. This is why I like to write doctors and scientists. I can fake that stuff with some authenticity. Harold is a rod for my own back. (Still love him, though!)

My actual Yuletide prompt is a little intimidating but entirely doable. Just need some canon review. And some time for some canon review.

Art and fanmix post by [livejournal.com profile] skylar0grace.

(Written for [livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang. Set after episode 4.01, Tempus. So many thanks to [personal profile] lilacsigil and [livejournal.com profile] dbalthasar for their help with this fic!)
st_aurafina: Short, round chick with glasses and dark hair (Country girl!)
We spent yesterday doing some medical stuff - [personal profile] lilacsigil is having a day procedure next week and there's pre-op check-ups and so on to be done this week. It's super exhausting, even though it shouldn't be. Mostly I think because we both instinctively do this massive, massive girding of loins, getting ready to deal with big scary stuff that isn't there. We charge up our nuclear reactors for generating cope just to power a light bulb, if you know what I mean. You probably don't. I don't think I know what I mean, but today at work I cried, because I was so tired I just wanted to lie on the floor. Now I'm chilling out with a drink, watching [personal profile] lilacsigil make Lego Tony Stark ride a lion.

I didn't read a lot this week - mostly I inhaled the whole first season of Masters of Sex. Lizzy Caplan is amazing - actually, all the women were amazing. All the men were frustrating in that way that the male characters of Mad Men drove me berserk.

Just finished reading:

India Black: Madam of Espionage by Carol K Carr

Well, that was fun all the way down. India's love interest (or so I presume) kept a large number of guns and knives in his trousers. There was an unexpected journey across the Channel. Lots of food and wine and luxury furs. Will definitely read more, especially while I'm feeling stressed.

Currently reading:

Hild by Nicola Griffith

Lots of people on my flist were reading this a few weeks ago. I've only just started but I like it so far.

Planning to read:

...um. *scans list* Scorpio Boys? More India Black?

You know what I did that I probably shouldn't have did? I signed up for things:

[livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang - to finish off my Sanctuary AU where Imogen doesn't die. Victoriana, yay!

[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang - to finish off my Valdemar/XMFC fusion where Charles is the Companion. Sparkly pony mindbonding, yay!

Ugh, the people in the holiday house across the road are back, with their throbbing bass and their barking dogs. I AM NOT IN THE MOOD FOR THEIR BULLSHIT! I've put up with it all through Christmas. They're supposed to go home after Australia Day!

*cranky and not quite drunk enough*

Hopefully Recipe Friday tomorrow.
st_aurafina: A shiny green chilli (Food: Green Chilli)
Recipe Friday. I made it up.

Something I've cooked recently:
Ricotta pancakes with fig jam.

These were good! Not really a pancake person, but we had these for breakfast on Boxing Day. They were fluffy and thick and not too sweet. You really do need to have two pans going at once, though, for adequate pancake to person supply. We didn't have fig jam, so I used raspberry. (Fig jam! Always cracks me up. Fuck, I'm Good, Just Ask Me!)

Nigella's Sticky Gingerbread

This was the breakout recipe of Christmas 2013 for us. It's so good! So treacly and sticky and tasty and also huge. (You bake it in a roasting dish!) It seems to keep well, too. I'm definitely going to make this again, even if it's not Christmas.

Something I've got concrete plans to cook soon:
Chocolate Pound Cake

With no substitutions, not overbeating, using Australian sized measuring cups for an Australian recipe. Basic cake, you will be defeated. By me. Eating you.

Something I'm idly thinking of cooking in the future:
Orange and ginger glazed pot roast

It's going to be super hot for the next week, so I won't be wanting to put the oven on at all, but after that, I'd like to try this in my cast iron pot. I love pot roast, and it makes such nice leftovers for the rest of the week. And we have a jar of marmalade in the cupboard which needs to be used up. It's lemon, but [personal profile] lilacsigil's dad made it and it will probably be pretty good.

In the garden, we have our first zucchinis! It's very late, because it's been a really cold summer for us. The rest of Australia has been in a massive heat wave, apparently. We've had hot water bottles and long sleeves and gale warnings and mud. Caterpillars are sorted, thank goodness. Peas are advancing. Cucumbers are flowering. Pumpkins are growing like weeks. Tomatoes still green. Lettuce still weird and bitter but I kind of like it. We've got a few hot days up ahead, and I'm hoping it will resuscitate the basil.

Thanks to [personal profile] medie for another great year. I love this fest!
st_aurafina: A shiny green chilli (Food: Green Chilli)
Ack, life is oddly frantic!

- Planted our tomato seeds today, along with some Lebanese cucumbers and some coriander. I planted another thyme plant out in the back garden, where most of our herbs seem to be accumulating. And [personal profile] lilacsigil bought a bay tree, which she transplanted into a pot to sit down with the veggie beds. Peas and lettuces are growing!

- Finished my baby afghan. I still need to wash it and reblock it, but it's done, and I really like the way the trim came out. I had a lot of yarn left over, so I made a little pixie bonnet, and I've started a pair of booties:

Booty and bonnet sounds surprisingly rude, actually. )
st_aurafina: Helen Magnus from Sanctuary - a shot of her face (Sanctuary: Helen Magnus)
1. [personal profile] lilacsigil was rummaging in the freezer today and found a random lasagna from last year. Yay, surprise lasagna dinner!

2. My Cat From Hell is my new favourite show. We're going to try Chewie on a leash. He's a pretty happy guy on the whole, but I think he'd like more energy burning activity if we could give it to him, and there's no chance we're going to let him be an outside cat. (He just stuck his tongue out at me, so I'm pretty sure he's reading this as I type!)

3. We're watching Dance Academy season 1 as our lunch time show. It's the first time [personal profile] lilacsigil has seen it. I'm really enjoying seeing all the proto-people that I've gotten to know so well.

4. I've gotten my little sister hooked on Sanctuary. I get random texts from her that tell me where she up to. Today I got "EHMAGERD MAGNUS KISSED A GIRL! Were you totes happy?" and "WTF IS THIS MUSICAL EPISODE?" Bless.

5. I made what was supposed to be a tiny, chunky hat for a newborn, and for some inexplicable reason, it came out flat on the top. So, since I'd made it in red yarn, I turned it into a tiny baby fez:

As always, lilacsigil is my hat model )

From [personal profile] sineala:

It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your post.
"Conventional product: start with 2-4 mg every 4 hours, then adjust dose to give analgesia lasting 3-4 hours."
(HYDROMORPHONE FOR ALL, YAY!)
(Okay, it doesn't say that in the book, but it would be funny if it did.)
(No, it really wouldn't.)

Warehouse 13 is continuing to delight, and to be the low-stress highlight of my week. Everyone in character. Every plot thread followed up. Nobody has to be stupid for plot to proceed. It's all of my favourite things.

And this: slightly spoilery conversation from last night's episode )

Less cheerfully, we just cancelled our standing order of comics. That was a really hard email to send. I love our comicbook store, and the guys who run it are great. There's a whole redacted thing here about how I feel about the comics industry but I can't be arsed. I'm just sad, because I remember anticipating the arrival of a huge box of comics each month, ripping that sucker open, and having comics slither everywhere. I haven't felt that way for a long time.

I can remember when I realised that this day would come, though. It was when Marvel Divas was described as 'hot sudsy fun.' We stuck it out for a long time after that, but I think that's when I realised that the comics industry fundamentally did not want my money.

The [community profile] twinpeaks re-watch is on again. We're up to S1 episode 5 (The One-Armed Man). Warnings for gifs, spoilers and eldritch horror.

Coming up, in TV Shows I Can't Wait For, Idris Elba is headlining a Warren Ellis-penned series about (apparently) "the history and future of astronomy and mankind’s impulse for the stars." I don't actually care what it's about, although this sounds like it has significant crossover potential with Doctor Who, and I will do anything to get Idris Elba into the TARDIS. (He'd make a great Corsair, Y/Y?)

On the other hand, in Shows I Never Want to Watch Again, Supernatural has cast Amanda Tapping as a business-suit wearing bad-ass angel. Smooth move, show, but you won't suck me in. Tumblr will provide all the delicious eye-candy I require, and none of the gruesome sexed-up deathiness of your revolting show.

Palate cleanser: Mega-echidna.
st_aurafina: Helen Magnus from Sanctuary - a shot of her face (Sanctuary: Helen Magnus)
- I think I've said this in other places, but I have to say it again: the BBC Olympic commentary >>> everyone else's ever. They are well informed, genuinely enthusiastic about all the athletes, and endearingly excited when anyone from Team GB comes out.

(The cross-country riders wear these amazing inflatable vests, like wrapping yourself in an airbag. They puff up when the rider falls, and sometimes there's this brief moment when they're stuck on their backs like turtles, unable to get up. It's more amusing than it should be. That, and checking to make sure no horses and riders were seriously injured before we started watching made it a lot easier to see the falls.)

- I'm really enjoying Warehouse 13. A lot. I think they're setting up a great season arc. Everyone is in character. Nobody has been forgotten. I'm tentatively hopeful for a great season.

- Pretty much what I said for W13 applies to Leverage. This show! So much fun, so very little stress.

- Bunheads is perplexing to me. I enjoy it - so many female characters, so many different relationships between women, and I am such a sucker for mentor relationships, which this show is giving me in spades. But I watch every episode poised on the brink of embarrassment squick. I don't have trust yet. The writing hasn't driven me away, but man, every week it walks right up to the brink and thumbs its nose at me.

- This is probably a mental health thing - my moods are all over the place - but I keep having moments of intense sadness that Helen Magnus is never going to be on my TV ever again. I'm so sad about Sanctuary being cancelled, even though S4 was far from stellar.

- I should have posted about this earlier, but I didn't think of it until I could actually buy the ebook myself: Lost Things is available for general purchase now. (It was previously exclusive to B&N, which, yay! Publicity! But boo, I couldn't buy it, being outside the US.)

It's by Jo Graham ([livejournal.com profile] jo_graham) and Melissa Scott ([livejournal.com profile] mescott) and it's really good. Airships and archaelogy and spiritualism, set in 1929. These two authors are queer-friendly and LJ based, so, you know. Support them. (And nominate this sucker for Yuletide, because I want to write it!)

I'm posting the cover art because it's so pretty. And perfectly in the mood of the books.

Summary: Declan couldn't imagine a better job than a London Zoo vet, until he crossed paths with the Sanctuary.
Notes: Someone (I'm suspecting [livejournal.com profile] penknife?) wrote a throwaway line that Declan had lizards hanging off him the day that he met Watson. For some reason, I read that, assumed it was at the zoo, and instant head canon was born: Declan was a zoo vet.

And thank you to [livejournal.com profile] dbalthasar and [personal profile] lilacsigil for all your help!

Cthulhu take the wheel: on Facebook, someone recced Fifty Shades of Grey. To my mother.

Editing blows. Why does editing give me plot bunnies for things I can't write? (Admittedly, [personal profile] likeadeuce is responsible for one of those plot bunnies.) Current wiki tabs: Pupa, St John's Wood, and extremely relevant to Sanctuary writing, List of animals named after animals. (I bookmarked that one. I'll be using that a lot. Arctic Woolly Bear Moth, anyone?)

My podiatrist added a wedge to my orthotics. My feet are so messed up, I can't even. Forty years of walking like a duck takes a toll. The only comfort I'm taking from this (apart from reduced knee pain, yay!) is that I am some kind of interesting challenge for my podiatrist. I think I'm the case you talk about at conventions and so on. She stares at my feet with wide, amazed eyes.

The upshot of these new, higher orthotics is that I can no longer wear Doc Martens - they're just not high enough across the bridge of my foot to accommodate my foot and three centimetres of plastic. The sad part is that I have a brand new pair that I was saving to break in once I got my orthotics.

Aussies, does anyone want a brand new pair of Docs? They're black lace-ups, smooth with yellow stitching, as seen here. They're a UK size 7.

I can donate them, and if nobody here wants them, they'll be going to Lifeline next week. I thought I'd check and see if someone I know can use them first. I'm happy to cover the cost of mailing them inside Australia. (If you're interested, leave a comment. Or PM, if you prefer privacy.)

I am editing all the fic. Editing sucks, because deep down I have this terrible fear I am actually making the fic worse. I don't want to break my fic!

And because I'm editing Sanctuary fic, I have awesome wiki tabs open: Komodo dragon, predictive analytics, Luna moth, St John's Wood, goat-antelope. (Goat-antelope! It's like something from AtLA. Platypus-bear!)

Today was a pretty sucky day at work - the whooping cough epidemic is swelling, and I am glumly watching the clarithromycin supplies dwindle. I had to sign millions of pages of legal documents (because someone in government decided that it would be great to let pharmacists function as Justices of the Peace. If I'm going to be a Justice of the Peace, I want a big sword or a funky curly wig.) Then every doctor wanted every patient's dosette pack changed, and I didn't get to have lunch until three. But then, just as I was about to give up and lie on the floor in despair, there was a box of puppies! Like, a box of puppies! I can't explain the delight of a box of puppies coming to visit. They are Jack Russell puppies, a month old, and have those tiny puppy heads and little round noses and tiny milk teeth, and a little one called Daisy fell asleep in my hands.

Puppies! Better than caffeine! Better than chocolate! Possibly better than cocaine, but I have no evidence to compare.

I love working in the country. Once I asked a customer wearing a baby sling if they needed help, and a little joey poked his head out of the sling.
