BAGGINS IS A FREE ELF! He's off sub-q fluids, he's got, as far as vets could tell while he was fully perfused, good renal function and low CK, and seems fit to make a full recovery from the snake bite. We are very lucky. So very lucky. Now we need to build him up and get him well, but he's doing a lot of that work himself, as cats do (MOSTLY BY JUMPING ON THE KITCHEN BENCH TO LOOK FOR HUMAN FOOD GRRR.) We think we found the site of the original bite - back right leg - because the skin got pink and raw there, but it's healing up. And as the vets said he would, he's doing his own physio, working on those damaged muscles in his wheel and playing with his brother. He's the best of cats. Champion of cats. Most cat of cats. <3

State of me:
Prednisolone is a beast, and it's slowly frying my brain, so I'm currently resorting to pink wine in the early afternoon. I'm not at work or anything, so I feel like that's a valid decision.

My concentration window has been appalling so I've barely read any Yuletide, beyond my wonderful gift fics, which has been sad-making because I love the process of reading and reccing and commenting. I'm hopeful that as the pred dose drops, my ability to get my eyes to stick to the screen will improve. I've got a doctor's appointment upcoming where we can review the rate of decrease and make some kind of long term plan. In the meantime, I'm average four-five hours of sleep a night, getting up at 5:30 with a weird unfocused mania that has me running around the house ~doing things and ~making plans. And crochet. Crochet is a life-saver at the moment. I still have knees, though right knee is making a whispered reappearance on the pain scale, possibly because I'm doing as much movement while I still can.

State of the Yuletide:
I wrote this for The Black Tape podcast - when my brain is up to it, I'll post it here properly. And answer comments, oh, gosh.

I'm lucky/sheltered/Australian enough not to feel too threatened by the move of servers to Russia, so I'm not going to delete or stop cross-posting at the moment. I got two fics for the Demi Lovato music video, Confident, and omg, yay!

This is the source material, for anyone who wants to check it out: Demi Lovato - Confident.

Actually, I got three fics, because of issues with fandom tagging - someone kindly wrote me a pre-Yuletide drabble last week, which I totally meant to link but everything fell aside in the mess of MY CAT GOT BITTEN BY A SNAKE drama:

This is a whip-smart weaving of mythologies into a needling little story that kicks the video into gear and sets up some good consequences for the actions of the male character involved. And fistbump for someone else who believes that a drabble is one hundred words, also.

Short and bitter and bone-dry, this one is filled with clever, cyber-punkish world building, and bitterness for the things that they've lost to the system that caught them. (I've always liked Michelle Rodriguez for a female Wolverine, myself, so it chimes extra right for me on that point.)

And for myself, I've had a lovely comment from my recipient, so I'm very happy and relieved that it has all gone well. Happy Yuletide all around. Now to dive into the archive!
st_aurafina: monarch butterfly wings (Butterfly wings)
State of the Writing:
I posted a bunch of fics, but have a few more that only need a little bit of work. (Sanctuary wing-fic, this one X-Men/Sanctuary fic I've had hanging around, that Warehouse 13 fic that I thought was finished but actually had [put kiss here] in the body of the text, ffs.)

I'm going to try for a finish-a-thon this Nano. I just totted up my works in progress:
- Post-Winter-Soldier Save Bucky fic now jossed by, I think, four MCU movies, 55K
- Person of Interest 5 Things, with 3/5 of the things done, 15K
- Person of Interest post S5 fixit, 36K
- Person of Interest Sentinel/Guide fic I should never have started but it's so addictive, 5K
- Dracula 2013 Lucy/Mina/Grayson fic 6K
- Original fic, Boarding House of Together They Solve Crime, 50K

That's 167K of unfinished business, holy shit. That's not right. Something has to change here. I think I'm staging an intervention on myself.

Yuletide assignments were super early this year, huh? Mine is great - I'm excited about getting started on that, plus the letter reads like I wrote it. We're obviously very in sync, my recipient and I. For myself, I got my letter in right on the buzzer - Dear Author.

And I have a pinch hit for [community profile] femslashex that I absolutely need to get cracking on. Now.

State of the Garden:
- celery going strong
- snow peas starting to take off
- weird crinkly spinach in that stage where the more you pick, the more grows
- broccolini is down to one plant, but it still has... brockles?
- bok choy gone (it was a really good winter crop though.)
- seeds for button squash, butternut pumpkin, green zebra tomato, apple cucumber and leek are tiny but strong
- 2 zucchini seedlings are in and planning their strategic advance on the house
- coriander is going
- we put in some beetroot seedlings, mostly because apparently the greens are nice in salad? IDK.

State of the Me:
- I hurt my shoulder and the physiotherapist uttered the dread incantation 'rotator cuff'. It's not too bad, just inflamed, definitely not torn, but I'm being extra careful. I feel like I'm in a bad Victorian novel, always checking that my shoulder blades are down and back.
- The plebiscite on same sex marriage went down in flames, thank goodness, but that and world events in general have left me feeling fairly hopeless about the future. I'm still trying to get over the discovery that I live in a world where #nottheonion is a thing we need when reading news.
- I'm feeling generally flat and uncommunicative but I am trying to push out of it. I have NaNo write-ins I want to attend in Geelong. I've scoped out the locale, it looks nice and fairly accessible. I'm still nervous about it. Socialising is nervewracking, even when I want to do it.
- Pokemon Go is giving me life. Even though fewer people are playing, it takes the edge of my anxiety when I go to a new place, because I can scope out the poke-landscape.

State of the Cats:
Spring is here and we opened a window )

Yuletide! It seems like Yuletide comes around faster each year, which I don't mind at all because I FREAKING LOVE this exchange. This is my eleventh, and I've had a great time every year.

So, first up and foremost: I love Yuletide. I will love what you write. I've loved every Yuletide fic I've received. Please don't stress out! Please have fun writing.

Secondly, I write long letters with lots of suggestions, but they really are just suggestions. If you're one of those writers that does not enjoy being fenced in, then fly free, you beautiful wild thing. And if we don't gel on character choice, ODAO is a-okay with me. I like all the characters in these fandoms, I love all these fandoms for the stories and the worldbuilding. If you have to, ODAO like it's a rodeo.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not so much the mundane kind), crossovers (see [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina for fandoms), teamwork.

Plot! Big sweeping plot, small canon-compliant plot, things for the characters to do while they're snarking at each other, things going on around them while they're getting it on. I like stuff to happen.

Competence! I have a huge competence kink. I love seeing people being really, really good at stuff. I love lateral thinkers and characters who follow their instincts and people putting their skills to use in unexpected ways.

Ladies! BAMF female characters who don't have to bring other female characters down to be BAMFs. Mothers and sisters and girlfriends and girlfriends and wives. Women with agency. Women treated with respect.

Representation! People of colour. People outside the gender binary. Queer identities and culture. Non-nuclear families, found families, poly families, family that is family because you get to define it.

Things that I don't like as much (but can handle if the story takes you there):
Sad endings, character death, angst, embarrassment.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Requests: The Black Tapes, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Inhuman Condition, Confident - Demi Lovato (Music Video), Wynonna Earp, Stranger Things )

Miscellanea

I do not have a preferred fandom. I haven't put them up in any order except how they came to me tonight as I write my letter. I might have written more about one than another, but that doesn't mean I'm fixated on that fandoms over others. I love them all, and I would be equally delighted with fic for any of them.

If we've matched on a large canon, and it's not going to work for you, I've got a few small or easily accessed canons here:

- Inhuman Condition is a short webseries about a psychologist who treats patients with paranormal characteristics. The main character is Michelle, who is played by Torri Higginson from SGA.
- Picnic at Hanging Rock is an Australian movie set in the Victorian era, about the disappearance of three schoolgirls. It's spooky and atmospheric. It's also as old as me, which means you'll probably find it in a bargain bin. (I guess that means I belong in a bargain bin, too. Oh, dear.)
- Confident by Demi Lovato is a music video. It also stars Michelle Rodriguez, there's a lot of fighting, and women having each other's back. It's great. With explosions.
- The Black Tapes is a podcast about a journalist following the career of a paranormal investigator and known sceptic. It's just finished its second season.

Ours so far has been cool and occasionally rainy, which is lovely after Thursday's swelter.

I had three fics for Yuletide, which I've posted to my journal. I'm trying to do that more. The Archive might not be there forever, and it's a good idea to have a back-up. And besides, I'm trying to post more to comms on Dreamwidth, because that's somewhere where DW could do with more activity. I miss the days of busy comms on Livejournal.

This was my fic round-up:
A Beautiful Lie, (Killjoys, Johnny and Lucy)
Four things that didn't happen to Laurent, and one that could have changed everything, (Captive Prince, 5 AUs. SO MUCH FUN TO WRITE!)
Very Special Guest Star (The Muppets/Indiana Jones crossover. I never knew how much I would love writing Piggy. Wow.)

I finally get to rec the fics I betaed, too:

For [personal profile] lilacsigil
Five Ridiculous Things That Never Happened to Nancy Whitehead (and one awesome thing that did) (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl)
I love AUs, and I love Squirrel Girl, so this was awesome.

The Uncanny X-Gwen (Gwen Variants comics covers)
Fic for this Spider-Gwen cover - the one where she's all the X-Men, or at least, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. So. Many Gwens.

Jus Tertii (Daredevil comics)
Kirsten McDuffie (before she's dating Matt Murdock), who just wants to be a regular ADA, but can't because superheroes. I love that Stephen Strange consults for the District Attorney's Office. He so would!

No More Dominion (Spider-Gwen comics, Matt/Elektra, Foggy Nelson)
In this universe, Matt Murdock is evil, and he spends a lot of time considering his own evil. And his roommate at college is so unrelentingly nice, it's unbearable.

And one for [personal profile] monanotlisa:
Nobody Move (And Nobody Gets Hurt) (Killjoys, Dutch/Johnny, Dutch/D'Avin)
Set immediately after the last episode, a lovely friends-to-lovers rescue fic. Such awesome Killjoys fic this year!!

It was a really great Yuletide this year. (I say that every year, but it's true.)

First up, we're not on fire. There is a big fire down on the coast, and they've closed the Great Ocean Road in that area but it's not that close to us. We're watching it and the weather but we feel pretty safe right now.

It's still very hot, though it's starting to cool down and tomorrow is supposed to be a lot nicer. Today was hot enough that our lizard neighbour came for a visit and to sit on the hot pavers on the patio. It's good to see him, because blue tongues eat snake babies, and out here, snake babies are deadly babies. I don't like deadly babies. I tried really hard to get a photo of him, but the turkey coma was strong. It was so hot last night we all went to bed around 9pm, and then I bloody forgot Duolingo and broke a 140 day streak. DAMN IT!

Christmas was fun! Like, actually chill and relaxed and fun! This is mind-blowing to me. My sister came to stay for a couple of days, and she is lovely and clever and funny, and happy to hang around and internet or watch TV. I thought it was going to be too hot to cook the turkey (we had one of those rolls of breast meat), but it was also too hot to sleep, so I got up at 6:30 and had the turkey in the oven by 7:30. I turned the oven off around twelve, and We sliced it up and ate it warm with salad and roast veggies when we were hungry. Then we all lolled around and rubbed our bellies and watched Selfie. It was so low-stress and easy. Apart from the fires.

Yuletide is here! I have three fics in the main collection: one for a fandom I've written before, and two for new fandoms. So excited! So much new fic to read!

I received two fantastic gifts!
Indiana Jones and the little black dress of fandom! (AKA, an Indiana Jones/Torchwood crossover, which is GENIUS.) I love the way you can shoehorn Jack Harkness into any fandom, and this was done skillfully, and with exactly the right sense of fun. I love a fun crossover! And timey-wimey cleverness!

I went with fanfic, because I plain old ran out of time to plan the original fic properly. It's going okay? First week was wobbly, because things kept happening, but I'm on track now. For the time being.

W13 femslash for (belated) trope bingo: 5K
(How much fun is W13!! I love writing it! I had forgotten how much I love it.)
Sanctuary fic for (belated) trope bingo: 1K
Killjoys fic for for (belated) trope bingo: 2K
[Redacted fandom] for Yuletide treat: 8K
POI fic for no reason other than it pleases me: 3K

I didn't make the trope_bingo deadline, but I'll hopefully have something to post during the amnesty. I might even have a line. So that's a good thing.

I'm in the middle of the POI fic, that has somehow come out with Harold POV. Why? Why would I do this to myself? I'm not like Harold, and I know bugger all about computers, so I'm constantly having to look up terminology. This is why I like to write doctors and scientists. I can fake that stuff with some authenticity. Harold is a rod for my own back. (Still love him, though!)

My actual Yuletide prompt is a little intimidating but entirely doable. Just need some canon review. And some time for some canon review.
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Super Secret)
Dear Author-shaped-person,

Yuletide #10? But how? How can it be a full decade I've been doing this amazing exchange?

I feel old, but in a festive and merry, nose-like-a-cherry kind of way.

First up, I want Yuletide to be fun for you as well as me. That means that if you're the kind of person who won't be fenced in, please don't freak out at this long and chatty letter! I like guidelines and plot bunnies, but that doesn't mean you do. I'd appreciate you steering away from my squicks, but otherwise, go be free, you magnificent wild spirit.

If you are the kind of person who wants to know all the details and preferences, or see what plot bunnies are rattling around in my head, then read on. We are sympatico!

Here are my general likes and dislikes, c&p'ed from previous letters:

Visitors, man. VISITORS

I have never had so many visitors ever and it is weird. Weird-good and weird-exhausting. They are visitors I like quite a lot, and they are visitors who say "No, let me wash that" or "How about we cook dinner for you tonight?" which is great, but they are also seven more voices in the house than I have ever experienced. Weird and tiring in that sense.

The cats have handled it in different ways - Chewie hid in my underpants drawer for two days, and has just started following [personal profile] lilacsigil out into the living room when she tells him to come. (We have discovered that walking him on a leash means that he also heels. It's very cute.) He yells and sidles up to people to have his head scratched.

Baggins had a bit of a nervous collapse - he hid in my bed for so long that he peed in my bed, poor baby. (I assumed he had snuck out while we were all asleep to use his tray but this was not the case.) Now we've got a secondary cat station set up in the ensuite bedroom, where he can eat and use the spare tray, and when he's done, go back to hiding in my bed. He's chirpy and chatty and snuggly, as long as he doesn't have to go out of my room.

So, it's hard and it's weird to have people in the house, even people that I like. I think it's getting easier? I have to remember that this is why we wanted to move to a bigger house, though, and this is part of me trying to be a more social entity. I can be social! Kind of.

They're all off seeing a movie right now, so I'm taking this chance to post. And to blow off a bit of steam. Being social! It's haaaaaard.

I haven't had time to post about Yuletide! (I haven't had time to open my computer! I read in my last post, where I drunkenly said that none of the buttons are working - turns out my trackpad is kind of busted, and I can only mouse on the right hand side.)

I had an awesomse Yuletide! I got ALL the presents!

"Lynes. Do you believe in ghosts?"

(He doesn't. But Ned might be losing any choice in the matter.)

Ugh, this is gorgeous. Long and gorgeous and magical and wow. It's case fic set in Oxford, which would be awesome enough as a story, but the person who wrote this (and I am pretty sure you're on my flist, btw) has gotten hold of the magical system from the book and used it in a way that is clever and timey-wimey and exactly how I like magic to be used (and that would be awesome enough too) but also heart-rending and hopeful at the same time. And there are kitties. (If this isn't written by someone I know, I will be very surprised. And very delighted, because hey, there's person out there who thinks about things in a way that I think about things, yay!)

Devil's Trap (100 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Orphan Black (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Helena (Orphan Black), Grace Johanssen
Additional Tags: Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational, Misses Clause Challenge, Past Abuse
Summary:

Helena and Grace have a lot in common.

And one Yuletide treat - and it's a drabble, and it's 100 words, which makes this old fan very happy because a drabble should be 100 words, no arguments brooked. This is Helena, looking after Grace and getting her out and away from her family. Lovely and perfectly in character.

So, such a good Yuletide. Thank you to my mystery authors! And now, hopefully I'll have another spare moment to put up some recs. *crosses fingers*

Oh, Yuletide Writer! It's that time of year! Let's hang all that festive junk in all the right places.

Welcome to my letter. Woah, this is my ninth Yuletide letter. That's a bit scary.

First up, I want to let you know that I will love what you write. I promise! Eight Yuletides down, and I've loved every fic written for me. I love Yuletide, and I love that it's grown into this giant, multifaceted party celebrating fandom.

This letter is mostly optional. If you're the kind of writer who chafes at boundaries, please don't let this letter fence you in. I've thrown together a bunch of possibilities for these fandoms, but they're meant as inspiration, not as concrete requests. I would appreciate if you can veer away from the things that squick me but otherwise, if your muse is pulling you in other directions, that's awesome.

If, like me, you prefer prompts with guidelines (Lots of guidelines! All the guidelines!), then I've talked about each fandom behind the cut. I've nominated specific characters, and I know by Yuletide rules you're meant to include all of them, but I'm fine if you don't. I just wanted to narrow down the field for some of the larger fandoms and to give you an idea of who I find most interesting in the canon.

Here are my general likes and dislikes, c&p'ed from previous letters:

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not the no powers barista kind), crossovers, teamwork.

Death by Silver, Captive Prince, Stigmata, Ms Marvel, Orphan Black, Hawkeye )

Miscellanea

As always, I have somehow ended up writing more about some of these fandoms than others – that doesn't mean that I prefer them over the others. I love all of these fandoms and would be delighted with fic for any of them.

If we've matched on a fandom that doesn't suit you, I've got a couple of short canons in my requests this year. Death by Silver is available DRM-free from Smashwords. And Stigmata is a movie that you're most likely going to find in the bargain bin because it's (omg) 13 years old. (It's pretty cheap on iTunes, too, which I know because all my DVDs are still in boxes, and I had to buy it to review canon.)

For stalking purposes, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina and [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina. All my previous Dear Author letters are here: Dear Author. If you have any questions, you're welcome to message my partner, [personal profile] lilacsigil. She will keep your secrets!

Yuletide is a happy time for me, I always have a great time, and I always love my gifts. Thank you for volunteering to write for another person this year! I hope you enjoy the writing process, and that you have a great Yuletide too.
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Super Secret)
I had my little sister to stay for a couple of days over New Year, and it was lovely. She is so nice and easy-going and happy, and sometimes I wonder how she came from my family but I don't care because she's awesome. I love her so much. But now she is gone, and all that remains are some haunted cats, a unicorn doona cover, and 'dogs bum looks like jesus' in my google search box. Such good times!

Yuletide reveals! This is me:
Four Times Rolan Spoke For Valdemar, and Once He was Speechless For Himself (1884 words) by st_aurafina
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Valdemar Series - Mercedes Lackey
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Talia (Valdemar), Rolan (Valdemar), Talamir (Valdemar), Dirk (Valdemar)
Additional Tags: Soul Bond
Summary:

Rolan is not like other Companions. He Chooses again.

Sparkly pony Christmas! I couldn't say anything in the lead-up to Yuletide, but I had the best time reviewing canon! I read Arrows, Winds, Storms, Vanyel, and then went and read some of the anthologies, and Alberich's books. I hadn't read Alberich's story, and there was a lot in there I needed to know about Talamir and Rolan and Monarch's Own business. And then, because I was on a roll, I re-read the Diana Tregarde novels, which aren't holding up as well in the fail:nostalgia ratio as Valdemar is. I remember loving them so much when I was younger. *sigh*

I'm still on prednisolone for the asthma flare-up I'm in the middle of, and it's such a monster drug. I'm all hyped up and twitchy, and HUNGRY, and my calves are spasming and crampy, and I want to jump down every tourist's throat. (Actually that last one probably doesn't have much to do with the prednisolone. Tourists, man. I hate'em. BE FUCKING POLITE ON YOUR HOLIDAYS, YOU RUDE FUCKING FUCKS. YOU'RE FUCKING GUESTS IN MY FUCKING TOWN OMFG.) The prednisolone has also drastically cleared up my sinuses, to the point where I am rediscovering just how bad we all smell. Ugh. Everyone has this cloud of smell around them, even me, and it's like my personal space has been reduced exponentially. We smell! All of us! It's weird and I don't usually have to spend energy processing that information. Ugh.

In conclusion, we have caterpillars in our tomatoes. This is not a metaphor. They are cabbage loopers and tonight we go at them with chemical weapons, aka detergent.

2013 was a strange year, supposed to be a recovery year after all of the health shenanigans we'd been through but it was actually a bit of a mess. And for Christmas, I got asthma and family shunning, so thank goodness for Yuletide.

I am older and wiser, heading into 2014, and I have only two resolutions:

1. Write more (and as consequence, post more.)
2. Eat with order, and to make myself happy.

I haven't finished going through the Yuletide archive - I'm less than halfway through at this point, but I wanted to slip some recs in before reveal.

Bletchley Circle, Candle Cove, Captive Prince, Dance Academy, Death By Silver, Emily of New Moon, Eternal Law, The Faraway Tree, The Fox - Ylvis (Music Video), Hark! A Vagrant, The Middleman, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Zodiac Cycle - Julie Dillon )

I was going to go to bed, but I think I'm going to make it to midnight after all. Happy New Year, people! See you in 2014!
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
GUYS GUYS GUYS! GUYS! GUYS! OMG, GUYS!

I love my fic! I love love love this fic! Go read it!

No, wait. First, open up this page: Julie Dillon's Zodiac art, click on Capricorn and gird your loins.

Then, go here: Zodiac: Your Guide to Fighting the Demon Invasion in Twelve Easy Steps.

Now be amazed at Yuletide and all its magic and how it is awesome that someone out there would write something so wonderful for someone they don't know.
