st_aurafina: flags waving and people raising arms in silhouette (Activism: Flags)

Things have gotten awful bleak in the last ten days. Argh. *eyes next four years warily and wearily* On the other hand, peoples' outrage is extremely heartening. Protests at the airports? You go, guys. Protests everywhere? You rocking awesome people. Keep getting up in their grills, they're obviously not able to ignore you.

I don't have a Recipe Friday post because I haven't cooked much that was new to me since the last one, but I do have linkspams:

- [community profile] thisfinecrew's weekly check-in from the 29th has reports from protests, as well as a long list of resources to donate to:
Weekly Check-In

- Pretty icon shinies for your activist posts:
[personal profile] goss posted activism icons (points to shiny new flag icon): Activism Icons
[community profile] oraclegreen has a whole gorgeous bunch of Icons for Unity, Hope, Love

- Unofficial, unaffiliated resistance Twitters for scientific organisations like @Stuff EPA Would Say, @AltNASA, @Angry National Park, (to oppose misinformation and the general sledging that science funding and education is likely to get in the next few years):
Twistance members

- It's been linked everywhere because it's a really good resouce, but just in case you missed it:
How to Stay Outraged Without Losing Your Mind
(I especially like how it emphasises that what Trumputin's administration does should not become normal, and that you should be engaging in self-care to not become inured to it.)

- via [personal profile] yuuago, Bandcamp is donating profits to the ACLU on Friday the 3rd, so it's a good time to go find some new music:
#NoBanNoWall: Over 200 Labels & Artists Join Us in Donating Friday’s Profits to the ACLU
(I would also take recs, if you've got them! I need new music.)

Palate cleansers
- To that end, check out these amazing ears:
Fennec Fox Baby Emerges at Taronga Zoo

- Whatever I am, it's the opposite of a super recogniser, but I found the test interesting:
This online test can tell if you're a 'super recogniser' of faces

- This could be awesome? Alan Cumming is so classy, in everything ever.
CBS Orders James Patterson Pilot Adaptation Starring Alan Cumming
The network has given a pilot order to Killer Instinct, starring The Good Wife alum and three-time Emmy nominee Alan Cumming. The plot centers on a retired CIA operative who’s left the agency for a quiet life as a writer and professor, but gets dragged back into service when the NYPD needs help catching a serial killer

- Because I'm sure you all want to know how to make churros in a mug:
Microwave Mug Meals Worldwide
(I find microwave mug meals conceptually fascinating, but I never seem to actually make them. So, take this link with a pinch of salt. Ha ha, pinch of salt. *sighs*)

- [community profile] halfamoon is on! It's a fourteen-day fest celebrating female characters, from February 1st-14th, and there's a bunch of stuff happening, including daily prompts, requests, and I think there's a friending meme planned for later, also.

- This is adorable! And actually looks pretty easy to make. I think I even have the colours for it in my stash right now.
Princess Leia Crochet Coffee Cosy

- Tentatively excited about this (though, as [personal profile] lilacsigil said, I wish they had cast a believably plus-sized Gert):
Marvel Runaways finds cast

earlier today I decided that what this world needs is more cute animals, and snagged a picture of this fennec fox for tomorrow's post. now I'll be accused of copying you, but I don't even care!

and I'm thinking I'll make that a semi-regular feature in my journal, because there's a special sort of warm fuzzy that comes from cute animals, more than the usual interesting, amusing crap I often share

Yeah, ethnically the casting doesn't look too bad, but I'm surprised they clearly put said effort into matching up the other characters and then... it's like they got to Gert and was like "fuck, we want to hire this actress but there's only one unfilled character left HERE YOU GO"

THOSE EARS. How dare they?

(I would also take recs, if you've got them! I need new music.)

Dessa if you haven't already. Minnesotan rapper. If you're looking for more rap that passes Bechdel, she's here for you. The half of [personal profile] dira's fic titles that aren't the Mountain Goats are Dessa. Here she is singing 'Dutch' from A Badly Broken Code. She's the book that beat the speedreader...

clipping. are electronic rap, and you may have heard me yelling about their album Splendor & Misery already, but I'll yell some more just in case. Get your AI/human feels here. Also Afrofuturism, references to Delany and Butler and Le Guin and Jemisin, hidden messages in Morse code, and did I mention AI/human feels? All Black Everything: AI/human feels.

When people ask what your "walk up" music would be if you were a baseball player (ie, the personal music some teams let the players pick to introduce their turn at back) I always pick the "Pope in the glovebox, Plath on the dash" bit from 'Dutch'

I <3 Fennecs. They're one of my favourite animals.

(Am also very fond of otters both big and small; and snow leopards. And caracals.)

The face recognition thing was interesting. True facts: I'm horrible with names, horrible, but I generally remember faces unless I've been burned out. I always figured it was just because I don't work customer service so of course I'm going to remember the people who wait on me etc but they see thousands etc. but surprisingly I scored pretty high on that test.

I got 5 out of 14 which doesn't surprise me -- I've recently realized how very bad I am at faces, because I've been circulating petitions for a local political candidate, which sometimes involves standing in front of the supermarket and approaching people either as they come in or as they leave. I had absolutely no idea how fast faces went out of my head until I was faced with having no idea whether I had already talked to a person or not (and frequently being CONVINCED that 'this is the guy who just signed' but it was in fact a totally different person.) I've only gotten a false negative once and the people were very nice about it but wow. Gives me new appreciation for people who are good at faces.
