May the Fourth, guys. *sobs a little*

- Via [personal profile] spikedluv: Glitter for Carrie Day (I'm wearing a glittery pendant in the shape of a butterfly wing.)

I should be finishing up a fic for beta, but instead I'm procrastinating by clearing my inbox and answering comments. And also doing my job, to be fair. It's not the best environment for writing, a busy store.

New (or new to me) Comms
- [community profile] fanifesto - similar to [ profile] ship_manifesto. A community for fannish manifestos, or why this thing you love is the most amazing thing ever. (I should write a thing for this. I don't know what I should write about, though?)

- [personal profile] memekink - a masterlist of kinkmemes on Dreamwidth! This is a damn good idea.

- [community profile] rocinante - for The Expanse fandom. They're currently doing a S1 rewatch, which is good timing for me and [personal profile] lilacsigil, because we're watching it right now

- [community profile] weekly_food_challenge - Every Wednesday a moderator will post an ingredient or a cuisine; over the following week members will cook something with that ingredient or in that cuisine and post pictures and recipes.
I keep trying to cook something in time for this, and failing. But this week is chickpeas, so maybe I can have a go at some FODMAP-friendly hummus.

[community profile] beautifulmechanical - This is a place to share the music that you love. Please do join the conversation and share any kind of music that you like.
Lots of eclectic stuff posted here.

- [community profile] yurionicefans - a community for all fans of Yuri!!! on Ice.
I'm not in this fandom, but I originally read it as Yuri O Nice Fans, and thought it was cute. Also it's a megafandom, so some of you are bound to be in it. You are nice fans, I am sure.

Craft Links:
- Random Stripe Generator
For knitters and crocheters who need to generate a random stripe pattern, because faking random with your own eye is really hard.

- Crochet Water Balloons
Reusable water balloons that don't leave rubber debris all over the lawn. Made with Bernat Blanket yarn, then soaked in water until they are squodgy. Apparently they don't hurt as much when they hit you, either.

- My Stash Explained (Art)
This is for knitters but I have some of these things: "Really nice yarns I'm afraid to use", "The stuff I bought before I knew what was good" and "I don't feel like winding these."

- Lake Town Socks
I really hope stirrup socks aren't the newest crochet fad.

Actually, I think the newest crochet fad is going to be rag doll style amigurumi, like this:
Rag Doll Unicorn.
All the legs are on the same side! It's kind of adorable. I've seen giraffes, zebras, donkeys and unicorns in the last week.

Random links for the joy of it
- Poll Says Best-Ever Trek Episode Is...
This is a lovely nostalgic trip. I was somewhat surprised at how many TNG episodes made it in here. I was not surprised that no Enterprise episodes made it on here, because there is so much (UNJUST) hate for Enterprise. I do not hate Enterprise.

- How Capicola Became Gabagool: The Italian New Jersey Accent, Explained
I found this really interesting, because American Italian names sound so odd to my ear - we've obviously all come from different parts of Italy, but it's cool to see how that ancestral difference has played out linguistically.

- 10 Podcasts You Need in Your Life After S-Town
I did not know Jermaine Clement had a podcast. (Note: I need to talk about Jermaine Clement and Legion. LEGION, omg.)

I have a complicated relationship with S-Town, after [personal profile] runpunkrun linked me to an article talking about S-Town and consent: S-Town is a stunning podcast. It probably shouldn't have been made.

- Via [personal profile] kass, Meta: Swift musings on the Moffat era.
This made a few things a bit clearer for me about Moffat, about whom I do not always feel happy. (But I am so enjoying this season! Three great episodes so far, and Bill Potts is a treasure.)

- Speaking of Bill, Doctor Who hid secret clues to the new series in plain sight
The mysteries of Bill's jacket!

- The X-Files is back again – sort of – as new spin-off reveals what happened BEFORE the revival series
AUDIO PLAYS OMG. I am so here for this. I have pre-ordered. I am ready to crochet and listen to Gillian Anderson in my ear. (I am considerably more excited about this than another season of TV, to be honest, though I'll watch that season and like it, damn it.)

- Cookie Butter Choco Cookie
Sesame Street (Japan) takes on PPAP. Because Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen will never die, it will just be memed and re-memed. Incidentally, I am so weirded out by Cookie speaking Japanese. I think it's a primal, child-brain reaction. I am less disturbed by Elmo doing it, because I am way too old for Elmo, but Cookie? So weird...

Music Meme: A song that reminds you of summer

I have four. Because I'm old enough to have that many summer songs, okay?

1986: Hunters and Collectors, Throw Your Arms Around Me

Because it's honest and bare and worshipful, and I just really like this song. Have done for decades now.

2006: Augie March, One Crowded Hour

The Triple J Hottest 100 is an Australia Day staple. It's usually a billion degrees, you flop around in a dark room trying to keep cool and listen to a countdown of the previous year's songs. I have been doing this since 1989. One Crowded Hour won in 2006, and I love it. (They put me in a cage full of lions; I learned to speak lion.)

2012: Paul Kelly, You're So Fine

This is a song for lying on a blanket and making out with someone for a long, long time. Not in the sun because you will burn to a crisp, but under a big old tree.

2017 James Blake - I Need A Forest Fire (ft. Bon Iver)

This was my writing song this summer, and though I don't think anyone needs a forest fire, I do love the mood of this - it's a feeling of wanting things to burn down just so you can get on with stuff.

You and every other Australian over 30, I think. I am earwormed, and I don't mind at all. It's a good song, Brent.

I heard my next-door-but-one neighbour playing it a few nights ago.

there is so much (UNJUST) hate for Enterprise. I do not hate Enterprise.

You know, I was just thinking the other day how I wanted to watch the rest of ENT, at least for completion's sake. I stopped watching after season 2, I think. I was torn because I really liked the characters but some of the plotlines were not to my taste, and when my mom decided to drop it from her watch list that was sort of it. (At the time watching TV together was one of the few ways we bonded, and she was a person of extremely forceful and unyielding opinions.)

How were the last two seasons?

i haven't listened to s-town, but i have southern gay friends who have and i know at least one is pretty disturbed by it. i won't listen to it because as another southern gay person, it makes me feel pretty gross that after being invited for one specific purpose, after the man who invited him commits suicide, a straight man decides to dig into a (semi-closeted as i understand it?) gay man's life and broadcast it to the world.

I would love if more people wrote for fanifesto... I should probably do the same, although I don't know what I'd write it on!

I saw some yoga stirrup crochet socks the other day, and I was very upset by looking at them.

Thanks for the link to the Moffat era meta! I have my own issues with him and his writing, but it was a fascinating look at what he's been doing with Doctor Who and it makes me more inclined to check out this series. (I'm glad to hear Bill is great!)

"Really nice yarns I'm afraid to use" ....Oh dear. xD I think most people have something like that. Because it's so... so... WHAT IF THE RESULT IS TERRIBLE and then of course there is the question of what would even be an appropriate project for this gorgeously soft but frustrating-to-use angora-marino blend.

Yeah, you had me at Throw Your Arms Around Me.

That Hottest 100 thing. I don't listen anymore because I feel out of touch with a lot of recent music, but it was a great tradition. I have the first five or six cds somewhere.

I think it's okay to not like 'the young people's music' (TM) because people are different and we're different at different times of our lives. Music that I played in constant rotation when I was at age X I only listen to for nostalgia now. And I think the flip of that is true - music that is about a particular stage of life - of how you live your life - isn't necessarily as attractive when you aren't living that life. Or maybe it's more attractive when you wish you were living that life. The classic 'It's Complicated' belongs here!!

I feel it's important not to say that the music I liked as a teenager is better than music liked by teenagers today because 1. objectively not true and 2. if I were a teenager now I would love it too.

Yeah. I never could take TOS seriously, but I loved ENT. I know I'm in the minority with that, but I thought they did a great job.

Very interesting links all around! Going to check those out later.

Ooh, thanks for the Expanse com link. I've been wanting a community for that show & hoping to find more things to keep me DW active. 2 birds, 1 stone. :)

Does your complicated relationship w/ S-Town veer more towards "Id recommend it" or "I wouldn't"?
