2020 Friending Meme

This helped me a lot in early 2017 when Trump had just been elected, and I am hoping we can get the same feeling going again, after the UK election was such a shock.

Connections are important when it feels like the world is getting darker. Fandom is a huge and strong network of people. We don't always get along, but we're stronger together.

Make new friends, reconnect with those who have drifted, enlarge your circle, and know you are not alone.

To play, cut and paste this text into a comment, fill out the details and tell us about yourself. Then go find new people to add.

If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, you can sign up for one here.
If you're new to Dreamwidth and you've left OpenID comments on DW before, you can link your IDs here: How can I claim my OpenID account with my Dreamwidth account?

Play nice.

And feel free to promote wherever you like with this handy box of linkage:

ETA on Sat morning AEST: This text box was functionally busted a few hours ago, so if you grabbed the code then, you might have an image with no link. It's fixed now, with all new alt text for screen readers. If your promo link is just an image, please replace the code with what's in the box now. Thanks for all the posts, btw! Giraffes popping up everywhere.

Active/primary interests or fandoms:
  • Mag7 (2016) (though I’ve seen a handful of episodes for the 1998 TV show and am down to chatter about that, too.)

  • Star Wars, in order of descending interest: Rogue One, The Force Awakens, Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy. And also the X-Wing novels. And Mara Jade / the Thrawn Trilogy. And Mace Windu in Shatterpoint.

  • MCU: Pretty much everything in it except Doctor Strange and Iron Fist.

  • about a thousand other fandoms, and a thousand more through flist/dashboard osmosis.

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: Been hanging around fandom since 2005 or so. Also I think I might’ve written the world’s first Tony/Bruce A/B/O fic after Avengers came out.
I post about: Mostly fandom. Sometimes photography. Sometimes social justice, particularly representation. Sometimes whining about how hard writing is. Sometimes just venting.
I post/check my feed: Varies depending on how much interaction I’m getting on here.
I want to find people that post about: fandom in general, any of the fandoms listed here or in my interests, media & literary analysis, photography, filmmaking.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: Dreamwidth and Tumblr
My blog is: 99% public.
Anything else you need to know about me: First gen Asian-American, bisexual, in my 30s, diagnosed very recently with ADHD and am very interested in conversations on living with it as an adult.

Hi, nice to meet you! I actually haven't read that series yet - I discovered Aliette de Bodard's fiction quite recently (I mean, I'd heard about her, but I think I started reading her stuff in 2018?) so I've still got a lot of ground to cover, but I've absolutely loved everything I've read by her. Mostly I've been reading the Xuya novellas, some short stories, and In the Vanishers' Palace, but I plan to read the Dominion of the Fallen series as soon as my current deluge of library loans lets up a bit. I'm sure after that I'll want to track down Obsidian and Blood, it sounds really interesting as well!

Also, yay Second and Fifth Doctor! Five is my other favourite after Two! :-)

Hee, in Finland we've clearly got lots of geeks. I was in the Dublin Worldcon this year, and Finns were the fourth biggest group of nationalities among the con members - pretty well for a North European nation of 5 million. :-) Anyway, hope you get to visit, this is a nice country (even if very dark at this time of year).

Yes, Troughton! I'm a fairly recent convert to Classic Who - it's not something that people know much in my country, so I only started watching it during the 2018 Twitch marathon, and during the few days when the Troughton era stories aired, I became obsessed. I enjoy most of other Classic Who as well, but at the moment the Second Doctor era is the only one where I've watched all the properly existing stories!

Yay for ballet, dance, and musicals! I also love musicals. Am a bit of a theatre nut in general, though it's been dormant compared to my other obsessions in the past couple of years. Do you also dance yourself, or do you just enjoy watching ballet/dance? I love seeing ballet, but I also do adult ballet as a hobby. :-)

I'd be happy to be DW friends if you want!

Yay! I try to start posting more regularly about both topics, especially since my fannish obsessions are currently strong in those directions! Nice to meet you!

Hi! I'm planning to start actually posting about podcasts more now - I've got some podcast posts in my head, once I get myself down to actually write them!

I recommend both of those very much, they're fabulous! Hope you like them.

If you don't mind answering, how creepy or grim are they?

Usually for anything that I listen, the answer is "not very" because I'm super bad at dealing with horror stuff and not good with really grim, dark or violent stuff. The Far Meridian has some psychological distress, mental health problems and occasional creepiness, but more in a fantasy and psychological than horror vein, if you get what I mean.

The Penumbra Podcast, I'm not far into it yet, but they have several different storylines in one podcast - both stand-alones and long continuing series - and they vary a lot in content. They're extremely good with content warnings in the episode notes, however. There have been some stand-alones I've skipped because the description said that they're horror and/or very dark. Out of the long-running series, I haven't yet listened to the Second Citadel stuff, but the Juno Steel stories are like queer space noir (well, Martian-settlement noir) with both humor and dark stuff. The noir genre does bring some dark and violent things with it, but they're usually not too bad by my standards, and I'm quite sensitive. I feel like the humor tempers the darker stuff a bit. Again, I'd recommend checking out the individual episode notes. The story I'm currently listening to, Juno Steel and The Day that Wouldn't Die, is super creepy and distressing by my standards, though, and I'm having to listen to it in short pieces so that it doesn't affect me too much. So if you're sensitive to creepy stuff, I recommend caution with that one.

Hi, I've seen you around - also I voted for Lady Business in the Hugos!! - and you post really interesting stuff, so subscribing! I'm also really into SFF books and that fandom, celebrating marginalized writers, and cosy and hopeful stories, and female characters and community building and all that good stuff. So anyway, I'm subscribing to you, feel free to do or not do the same, whichever you prefer. :-)

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Fandom is my fandom. I read, watch, and listen to a lot of things and don't Do Fandoms in that single-interest way.

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: you are or were hanging around Mindvox, #callahans, alt.callahans, alt.polyamory, the SFBA polyamory scene, LiveJournal, Twitter, Dreamwidth, Overheard in New York, Yelp (you think I'm joking but someone once genuinely recognized my name from my Yelp reviews), AIR/the Ig Nobels, Arisia, Readercon, Worldcon, SF/F and romance publishing, the Captain Awkward comments and FOCA, Story Hospital, Yuletide, #yuletide, the Yuletide Discord, AO3... I get around. If you've seen a rosefox or a Rose Fox someplace in fandom, it's me.

I post about: mostly real life, which at the moment is mostly Judaism, my partners and kid, and attempting to hack my sleep disorder. Once my life gets less hectic, I hope to get back to writing about writing, food, studying Japanese (unless I start studying Hebrew instead), New York City, books, knitting, genderqueer and genderfluid fashion, science fiction conventions, English country dance, travel, and other hobbies I vaguely recall having.

I post/check my feed: read every day, comment often, post as often as I can manage (not much at the moment, hopefully more soon).

I want to find people that post about: daily life, thinky thoughts, interesting links, reviews/meta. People who are inclined to comment on my posts are also extra good! For posts about current events, politics, climate change, civil rights, etc., I have a strong preference for reading people who generally take a compassionate, optimistic (even guardedly optimistic), and thoughtful approach to the necessity of fixing our extremely broken world.

I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW.
My blog is: partially public.

Anything else you need to know about me: I'm in my 40s. I swear a lot. I am left of left. I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things, but I don't require you to share them. I do my best to be kind to people and ask before giving advice. I live in New York and am always extra happy to meet local folks. (I met one of my best friends through a friending meme!) I created and maintain [community profile] localweather. I'm pro-RACK and pro-kinktomato and anti-anti. Your identity is valid and I support you.

Here's a more detailed all-about-me post.

*high five* I love them so much!

This will be a very incomplete list since I don't want to overwhelm you...she says as her list gets longer and longer.

A lot of people start with astolat, my personal fave being Hamartia, because undercover dads with Leila.

Toft will give you all the feels. I must rec both Penetration Testing (CIA John seduces Harold) and A Field Guide to Common Birds in New York City (a great character study of Reese and mental health, and also way funnier than that sounds).

MnemonicMadness is incredible. Check out M47CHM4K1N6.exe, Machine PoV running exquisitely detailed simulations on how best to get them together.

elbowsinsidethedoor has a special talent for AUs. See House of Wren for tailor!Finch with alive!Nathan

Our friending meme host st_aurafina writes hypercompetent characters brilliantly. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters is the Sentinel/Guide AU we deserve, and, in addition to plot, is peppered with super sweet kisses.

My newest fave is ArgylePirateWD. So hard to choose just one here. Oh what the hell. I don't know if you like mpreg (I do), but the comments are full of people saying 'I don't like mpreg EXCEPT THIS ONE', so. Two Dead Men and A(nother) Baby

A couple of shorter things since my other recs have been quite long
Home is (wherever I’m with you) by MFLuder (“Christ, Harold, we have a dog.”)
Candid by inmyriadbits, Spatz (John sends Harold pictures of things he finds beautiful)
Motivations by JenNova (“What made you choose the apartment?”)

Feel free to ask if there's something more specific you'd like to read / are looking for ♥

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: I wrote a fic! Probably in an exchange.
I post about: A combination of fandom and real life. I teach Latin at a rural boarding school, so expect stuff on that; I also crosspost my fic from AO3 (mostly...) and post about fandom in general. My new year resolution is to make a recs post at least once a month.
I post/check my feed: I check my feed every few days, and post a couple of times a month, usually.
I want to find people that post about: Old-school animanga (Gundam Wing, Weiss Kreuz, Rurouni Kenshin, etc.), Harry Potter, Star Wars, PJO, Gallaghercest, Classics, Egyptology, linguistics, folk music, rural life.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: Dreamwidth and Tumblr.
My blog is: Mostly public, with some stuff I think is too personally identifying friends-locked.
Anything else you need to know about me: I'm always on the lookout for fic recs. In the holidays I catch up on all the reading I don't get time for during the term. I'm a Yorkshire lass. I love animals, but don't keep any of my own. I love incest, non-con and dub-con, and am currently very into Ben Organa being in love with all his family members (plus Rey, who can be his sister if we like). I occasionally wade into 'anti' bollocks on Tumblr because purity policing drives me utterly wild; but much less so in recent years. My non-fandom interests include folk music (luv Steeleye Span) and Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e).
