st_aurafina: flags waving and people raising arms in silhouette (Activism: Flags)
I had pho for lunch yesterday and I will do the same today. It has a fuckton of ginger in it and I have a streaming cold so hopefully it will help. Yesterday, David Bowie came on while I was eating. ETA: Omg so much ginger. So much chilli. *fans face*

I have been quiet! But here and reading and also writing. Australia is (maybe) having a postal vote to determine if we will (finally) have same sex marriage. You'd think that would be a good thing, but the campaign for No is utterly vomitous. Like, I get up in the morning, casually read about how my relationship is the gateway to legalising bestiality, then get on with my job. As you do. And I know there are bigger and more life-endangering crises happening around the world, but that's a nasty and heavy stone to for me carry around. It has been leaving me very wordless at the end of each day.

It is also making me quite tense. AS YOU CAN FREAKING IMAGINE. But there's a stupid platform game where Tony Abbott appears and shoots lasers from his eyes. It's cheap. But it made me laugh: Going Postal

I can tell from my linkspam collection that I went into silent survival mode around the time of the Charlottesville attacks.

I got my 50K fic off to my second beta/ameripicker. I feel weird. I, uh, finished something. It's due to be posted on the 15th. What even?

Interesting things I didn't realise until I had to edit 50K of my own writing )

Thanks to [community profile] nanodownunder and Camp NaNo, I've got a first draft of my [community profile] wipbigbang. It came in at 48K (of POI Sentinel/Guide AU) Now I need to squish out the word bloat, edit it, and, um, find an Ameripicker. (Any volunteers? It's Root/Shaw, Harold/John, and my basic plan was this: "There are sentinels and guides. They touch each other on the face gently. A lot.")

I've been writing and writing and writing, and I'm 3K away from my 25K Camp NaNo total, but I'm floundering because I finished my main project, and my back-up project. I guess I should write some more [community profile] 15kisses fics.

Also, I am trying to do nominations for [community profile] femslashex. Nom nom nom!!

Writing! It's haaaaard but somehow words keep coming out of my fingertips like silly string.

Speaking of mocking insta-culture, I was struck by the algorithm, and now my insta is No. Fun. At. All. I know why they did it, and if I were a business using Insta to promote myself, the algorithm would be great. I could overloook the ads, but the lack of chronological feed is killing it for me. I like the posts of people I know, because I want to say "Hey, I like this!" but then that prioritises their posts over the stuff I just ogle for teh pretteh. And it's kinda creepy the way the thing is measuring the time I spend looking at stuff. Though I did find this article interesting, about the formation of insta-pods to game the algorithm:
Instagram influencers use comment collusion to game the algorithm.

- Five ways with pesto
(For all you people overwhelmed with basil. Or beetroot. The beetroot one is so pretty!!)

- International Drone Photography contest.
(There's not much info about the individual photos, unfortunately. There's an image in here that looks like animal harm - men with spears surrounding a fleecy thing - but I did a bit of research and it's from this festival in Spain: La Vijanera. It's a guy dressed up as a monstrous bear aka the embodiment of evil.)

- World realises Americans don’t use egg cups, loses its collective mind

ETA: I did not realise how much of a thing this was! This is an egg cup:
egg cup
You cut your toast into strips - the strips are the toasty soldiers, and you dunk them in the soft-boiled egg. You use a teaspoon or a coffee spoon to eat the rest of the egg when the yolk is all nommed. Optional extra, possibly from my Nonna: push your spoon through the bottom of the empty shell so that witches don't steal it and use it for a boat.

st_aurafina: (Middleman: MM!)
My little sister gives me life - she asked me about the acceptance ring, which is put out by AirBnB in support of marriage equality in Australia. I said I thought it was a good idea (apart from AirBnB being a super sketchy company) but that the debate was starting to hurt me when it used to energise me.

Me: Honestly, I've kind of given up hope on it going through.
Her: Don't worry. I'll buy one and carry your hope for you.
Her: I'll buy a few and wear them on my fingers and toes
Her: And nipples.

I'm taking her up on it, though. The debate is ugly and unnecessary and so fucking stressful at this point that I just don't read about it anymore. But she will carry my hope. On her nipples. Lovely girl. Best sister.

The temperature got into the negatives last night. (Negative 2C is 24 F, for you Fahrenheit types.) That doesn't happen! Also, the oak tree finally dropped all its leaves, like, FOOMP! It always goes last, and I always wonder if it's actually going to happen, because I don't get deciduous trees. It's so weird to have bare, wintry looking branches in the middle of all this green.

We're in that bit of winter where it's too cold to sow anything or start seeds, and nothing that technically can grow through cold weather is actually growing very much. My baby lettuces are chugging along in the greenhouse but at a rate of millimetres/week which makes salads a long-distant prospect. I miss summer salads! I miss 'throw a whole cucumber on that' salads. I still eat winter cucumbers, but they're nothing like summer.

Not that I miss the heat. Not one bit. Neither do the cats. They are so very loving right now. It's definitely our strong family bond and nothing to do with draining our body heat.

I messaged the person responsible for the floral dinosaurs made by the neural network to ask if they were okay with their designs being used for tattoos and got the okay. So, that's the first step, omg. I really, really want a dinosaur tattoo designed by a neural network. I didn't know until now. Now I have to decide if I want floral dinosaur, a sailing ship one, or one of the Escher-esque ones made of stairs. Chris, the person who runs (cares for?) the neural network offered to try some other designs - I wonder what would work? I wonder if using text would work? (This was the link in question from my last post: A Neural Network Turned A Book Of Flowers Into Shockingly Lovely Dinosaur Art There's fruit, flowers, ships and staircases)

- Free crochet pattern: Ragdoll Fox crochet pattern.
I shouldn't like foxes - they're an introduced species and they're eating all the bilbies, but this is pretty darn cute.

- more neural network fun: Harry Potter and the Neural Network fan fiction. Neural network learns about ships! Neural network learns ALL ABOUT CAPSLOCK HARRY! Neural network generates strangely plausible user names, like desire_at_the_malfoy or siriusly_harry. BelladonnaLeek! I think this is my favourite neural network thing yet. It invented the word 'hugulate' and now I want to hugulate the world.

I am eying this one for Root/Shaw:
London, 1839
Ex-cavalry officer Captain Grahame Westmore is restless for change, but escorting a diplomat’s spoiled daughter to Vienna isn’t what he had in mind—though for once he hasn’t been hired for his skills in pleasuring women! Independent, fiery and strong-willed, Elowyn Bagshaw is not the simpering lady he expected. Used to getting her own way and giving the orders, Elowyn will not be controlled so easily. Grahame soon realizes that he’s got a fight on his hands—and it’s one they’re both going to enjoy!
Rakes Who Make Husbands Jealous
Only London's best lovers need apply

Reasons to do this:
1. Shaw pretending to be a man
2. Shaw escorting a duplicitous Root pretending to be a diplomat's daughter
3. Shaw in cavalry uniform
4. Shaw in cavalry uniform on a horse
5. Shaw in cavalry uniform on a horse with Root holding on behind as they flee, flee from danger

Reasons not to do this:
1. All the other unfinished fics I have
2. I don't know anything about history ever
*sighs*

Nearly home time for me, then it's nose to the grindstone in fic town.
st_aurafina: Dale Cooper at the table with coffee and a donut (Twin Peaks: Dale with coffee)
So cold this morning. For values of cold in Australia, which is to say there's frost on the grass and I have my giant scarf on. I am having crappy, crappy low moods but weirdly and ferociously creative times. It is strange and I don't understand the rhythms of it at all. I feel like the world is being sucked into a black hole, and yet I cannot stop writing POI fic.

Five things about winter Saturdays in rural Australia:
- Frosty, foggy mornings that will become clear and sunny by twelve
- The footy scoreboard shining orange through the fog as the under-twelves play the 8am match
- Teenage girls in netball skirts with goosepimpled legs, poor things
- People leaving their shoes at the front door so they don't track mud through the pharmacy
- Farmers all hollow-eyed from helping calves into the world, eating hot pies for breakfast

I want to say some things about media I've been enjoying but I keep procrastinating because I don't have the time to write long and involved things. So, here are some short thinkings on things:

Five things about Wonder Woman
Not very spoilery but I wouldn't want to ruin anyone's joy )

Five things about Legion
Not too spoilery. Defs not addressing the big spoilers, anyway. )

Five things about Twin Peaks
I have seen episode five, so assume spoilers for up to there )

Five Things to Do
- Via [personal profile] leecetheartist, a zooniverse project based in Western Australia: Western Shield Camera Watch. Their description: Western Shield is a government funded conservation project that is dedicated to managing introduced predators, primarily foxes and cats, that threaten native wildlife in Western Australia.
This is a very gentle and calming kind of thing to do, I enjoy it a lot. You get to identify kangaroos and emus and all sorts of weird little hopping things. You could also identify this murderous looking bird:

[A giant, yellow eyed bird, going at the lens of a camera with an angry beak]

- [personal profile] anandrine is talking about communities on Dreamwidth: active comms, comms you'd like to see become more active. let's talk communities

- read this Beatles zombie AU webcomic: Eleanor Rigby
(when i was very small i assumed this song was about some lady who literally kept a human face in a jar by the door and since father mckenzie buried her that meant that he also killed her and basically i thought eleanor rigby was about zombies until i was like 12 years old)

- Check out this new prompt comm, [community profile] picture_prompt_fun, write a story for a picture prompt.

- sign-up for [community profile] multifandomdrabble, and write someone 100 words. I did this last year, when it was being trialled at Imzy, and it was fun! More details here.

Five Linkspams to make your day a little better
- This woman's joyful reaction at a woman proposing to her girlfriend at a museum: No One Can Get Over This Older Lady's Reaction To A Woman Proposing To Her Girlfriend (This gave me life at a time when I was feeling very bitter at yet another friend's marriage where they did not do anything about the hateful 'Man and woman' clause of the marriage act that must be read out at a wedding in Australia. Like this: Objectors block out Marriage Act's 'union of man and woman' words at civil weddings.)

- The Grenfell Tower fire is a horrible, terrifying tragedy. I am buoyed by the stories of how people have helped, how emergency workers have been amazing. (Like Mr Rogers: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.) Today in my email, I saw this about pharmacists dealing with the logistics of people losing all their medication and prescriptions and records: Pharmacists in West London have been working to help people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

- Remember Tommy Westphall and the snowglobe phenomenon? Check in with it again here: The Tommy Westphall Universe. Apparently reboots have really kicked the database into overdrive this year. I saw a pack of Morley cigarettes on Twin Peaks, which means the Twin Peaks verse doesn't exist. No surprises there, though.

- Knitting spies!! The Wartime Spies Who Used Knitting as an Espionage Tool

- From some of my Person of Interest research: The 10 Best Bottles of Vodka in the World. Linked because the tasting notes are even more amazing and wanky than wine tasting notes. For example: Soft and laser-precise on the palate with a seamless balance and great length of flavor.

Now I want vodka. But it is illegal for me to drink vodka and be a health professional. So cruel.

Son of ETA: As people have asked, yes, I am legally forbidden to drink vodka only while I am at work being a health professional. After work, I may freely engage in the drinking of vodka, and indeed, many other spirits.
st_aurafina: John Reese, looking down, covered in fairy lights (POI: John lights)
It's so cold I had to make myself a beanie. It's perfectly made to fit my melon-sized head and it has a huge pom-pom. It makes me feel tall. And the yarn is variegated, so the pom-pom has a big splash of red in an otherwise blue-green ball. [personal profile] lilacsigil said it has heterochromia, which, as Charles Xavier has taught us, is a very groovy mutation.

The downside of having a very groovy hat is dodging that never-ending thing when you make stuff, the "You could sell those and make money!" discussion. I could sell them. I'd blow out my thumb tendons trying to make a profit, and I don't want to do that. So it's not going to happen. I make stuff because I love making stuff. If I give you something, it's because I think fondly of you. Argh, why is this so hard to understand?

Also, all the makers on my flist: you are heroes, and I wish that your heroism was recognised, because I'm sure it's not, to the degree that it should be.

I'm having a bad time, mood wise. Thank goodness for fidget cubes, rubber bands and pink wine. Hopefully it's just the leftovers from the family birthday season (last one is today, thank goodness.) In the meantime, I am very tetchy, and only want to wear my beanie and watch Person of Interest. There are worse things to happen on mood swings, I know.

Adult things I have done: been to the dentist for a checkup. Updated my prescriptions at the doctor. Had a haircut. Made plans to go to Melbourne to see [personal profile] lilacsigil's family. Planted more lettuce.

Things I want to talk about but do not have the brain: Riverdale, American Gods (holy shit, Gillian Anderson!), icon making (cos I've been making a few, this post is kind of a GIP), recipes, Agents of Shield, Supergirl, yarn. Sense8. Twin Peaks (omg Twin Peaks!) The Star Trek: Discovery trailer, or as I saw it referred to: Star Trek: Disco Very.

Things I am actually going to talk about instead because it's easier: linkspams.

- via [personal profile] miss_s_b, [syndicated profile] lewis_and_quark_feed is the feed for a science blogger who works with neural networks. (You know those lists? Hobbit names as generated by a neural network, etc? Or, as I recently saw, The neural network writes the episode list for next season’s Dr. Who. The Daleks of the Daleks. Would watch.)

- via [personal profile] chinashop, [community profile] nanodownunder, or, a NaNo-style writing challenge for the southern hemisphere's winter. (Because in traditional NaNo, we're sweltering or on fire.) Not just for the Antipodean writer. For anyone. Kicking off for June - a locked comm for writers wanting to set themselves a deadline.

- Something I came across messing around on Twitter but don't know from where it came: Audio dramas sorted by genre

- something I have open all the time when I'm writing Harold Finch: a massive chart of birds of North America

- via [personal profile] dunmurderin, Bingo card generator.

- via [personal profile] misbegotten, The Definition Of Hell For Each Myers-Briggs Personality Type (because I can never get enough random MBPT stuff.)

- Boing Boing link: Crashed computer at Oslo pizzeria reveals covert facial recognition scheme (From deep within the Person of Interest gravity well where I live right now, I have to say this is some scary Samaritan-level stuff.)

- So you know that we really know how to live it up in the country, there was a local button festival: Button up for a colourful display at Buttonfest. (And the local paper didn't miss a beat when titling that article.) I love buttons. I could so become one of those button collectors. It scares me a little, because I don't have room for a hobby like that.

- Rare Photos of Frida Kahlo as a Young Woman in the 1920s. So amazing!

- Okay, I do have one American Gods link, via [personal profile] forests_of_fire, so you can watch it over and over like I have, American Gods Teaser Shows Gillian Anderson As [deleted for spoilers but go watch, it's amazing] (Spoilers for Episode Five, obviously.)

- last link! Japanese Woman Spotted Wearing Heels That Look Exactly Like Pigeons. Because she was worried about the welfare of the pigeons she was walking past. (Because, apparently, she didn't know that they would tear her to pieces in a minute if their life depended on it. Pigeons are survivors.)

Okay. Prayer circle for my brain weasels. And for my [community profile] wipbigbang, which currently lies disassembled on my screen and I'm not sure how to put it together.
st_aurafina: HG gripping Myka's wrist from the episode 'Reset' (Warehouse 13: HG and Myka in Reset)
Would there be anyone willing to do an Ameripick on 5K of Warehouse 13 fic? It's femslash, Helena/Myka, I'll probably rate it PG, but there's not much more than hand holding and kissing in it. (Also some slightly depressing thoughts about the Boer War, hence the PG.)

Remember [livejournal.com profile] 30_kisses? Now there's [community profile] 15kisses and its sister comm, [community profile] 15kinks. I took a kisses table for Root/Shaw. Eeee, maybe I can even get something written for it. *crosses fingers*
ETA: Also [community profile] 15woes for all your angsty fic needs, and [community profile] whole_new_world for AU claims. (Via [personal profile] chronikle)

Also [community profile] ssrconfidential (Agent Carter ficathon comm) is having a bit of a prompts fest: Plot bunny hutch (aka prompt sharing station!). Go, get your Peggy shoes on and kick some butt!

I am so sorry I didn't have a chance to post while the AHCA was being voted on - but I was collecting light and joyous linkspam to buoy my flist up - I'll post it now. Because we're all going to need buoying, pretty much until this time has passed.

The word buoy has ceased to have any meaning, also.

Begin Linkspam!
- Feel better about the nightmare world for 30 seconds with this tiny kid doing the haka. A most ferocious haka!

- Melissa McCarthy As Sean Spicer Performs "I Feel Pretty" In An SNL Teaser
The video won't play for me (in Australia) but the gifs are amazing. (Also, how omg pretty is Melissa McCarthy? She's gorgeous.)

- Kickstarter for a Frida Kahlo action figure

- My new favourite word cloud generator: Tagcrowd (Since Wordle has ceased to function and I am too scared to force Java to work so it does.) Just in case anyone else uses them for editing, like I do. (Helps me get rid of lazy words. Like/look/something/such/seem/almost. And so on.)

- Everyone and their dog has linked this, but please enjoy Tom Holland's lipsync battle. He kicks ass dressed as Rihanna and dancing his backside off. I feel quite different about Spider-Man now.
You can stand under his umbrella-ella-ella )

Whale, they’ve arrived. Whale watching season has arrived here. There are whales less than half an hour away from where I am right now - this delights me every year.

- Nicole Kidman and Gwendoline Christie Join Elisabeth Moss for “Top of the Lake: China Girl”. Top of the Lake's first season was incredibly wracking. S2 is probably going to be the same, but I'm going to watch it, because Gwendoline Christie. She looks so incredibly bogan and adorable in her copper's uniform! And omg, Nicole Kidman's hair and her freckles! I am totally here for all the wrong reasons, I know. Just call me Miss-The-Point-Dan.
Trailer under the cut! )

- How to Read a Yarn Label. Things I ought to do before I start the project, but somehow never do.

- The Difference in Bernat Pop! Yarn Cakes, Caron Cakes, Mandala and Sweet Rolls. Yarn cakes are all the rage right now. I've only used the Premier Sweet Roll and honestly, the colour change is so abrupt that I might as well have just used regular yarn and had the colour changes where I wanted.

- Useless but adorable kitchen gadget, anyone? It makes radishes into 1-Up mushrooms )

- Free crochet pattern: Confetti Scarf. This is super cute, and I think I want to make one. I have some grey yarn and lots of coloured scraps. (I've been rolling my scraps into tiny balls and keeping them in a mason jar, it makes me feel very Insta.)

- Pink Moon Milk {a dreamy sleep tonic}. Because I'm a sucker for a hipster recipe with almond milk. Though I do not have any ashwagandha powder, and have no idea where I would find some. It just looks so pretty!

End linkspam!

I keep meaning to do a round-up of media consumed lately, but I keep getting involved in these linkspams. I do have thoughts that are not shallow and centred around craft and pink milk! Also, I need to do the music meme, but the next topic is "A song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget about." And presumably I have forgotten all the people I need to forget, because I can't think of anyone. Um.

I should be finishing up a fic for beta, but instead I'm procrastinating by clearing my inbox and answering comments. And also doing my job, to be fair. It's not the best environment for writing, a busy store.

New (or new to me) Comms
- [community profile] fanifesto - similar to [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto. A community for fannish manifestos, or why this thing you love is the most amazing thing ever. (I should write a thing for this. I don't know what I should write about, though?)

- [personal profile] memekink - a masterlist of kinkmemes on Dreamwidth! This is a damn good idea.

- [community profile] rocinante - for The Expanse fandom. They're currently doing a S1 rewatch, which is good timing for me and [personal profile] lilacsigil, because we're watching it right now

- [community profile] weekly_food_challenge - Every Wednesday a moderator will post an ingredient or a cuisine; over the following week members will cook something with that ingredient or in that cuisine and post pictures and recipes.
I keep trying to cook something in time for this, and failing. But this week is chickpeas, so maybe I can have a go at some FODMAP-friendly hummus.

I'm not in this fandom, but I originally read it as Yuri O Nice Fans, and thought it was cute. Also it's a megafandom, so some of you are bound to be in it. You are nice fans, I am sure.

I really hope stirrup socks aren't the newest crochet fad.

Actually, I think the newest crochet fad is going to be rag doll style amigurumi, like this:

All the legs are on the same side! It's kind of adorable. I've seen giraffes, zebras, donkeys and unicorns in the last week.

- Cookie Butter Choco Cookie
Sesame Street (Japan) takes on PPAP. Because Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen will never die, it will just be memed and re-memed. Incidentally, I am so weirded out by Cookie speaking Japanese. I'm not doing very well. The prednisolone did not go down quietly, I had rebound inflammation and I've been back on pred once already for a massive skin flare up (let me tell you about the 1 in 10,000 chance of getting photosensitivity while taking frusemide.) The cellulitis came back and I had another round of antibiotics (let me tell you about the rare side-effect where you can taste clindamycin IN YOUR SALIVA.) I've had lots of meds changes. I feel wrung out and tired all the freaking time. I am pretty down about this. I want to feel well, and not like my skin is crawling off my body. It's busy at work, too, and that is more exhausting than it ought to be.

I've signed up for [community profile] wipbigbang and Camp NaNo, so hopefully I can get some fic posted. I wasn't game to sign up for an actual exchange, so I sadly had to miss out on [community profile] ssrconfidential. I'm starting to be more chatty on Dreamwidth, which is nice, and I did manage to do a big push on answering AO3 comments, which feels like an achievement. My only other achievement was to crochet a sock monkey hat with a big red pompom. I'm quite pleased with it, even if my sister says the button eyes are demonic. That's part of the charm, I think.

The Expanse
- From Indiewire, The Expanse: How The Syfy Series Found the Unfindable Actress (Which Means Other Shows Can, Too)
About casting a S2 character, who is apparently female, Polynesian and tall/muscular. This is what made me want to start watching The Expanse, and I'm so glad I did. (I've just finished S1, so no spoilers, please. Apart from what's in this article, I guess.)

Podcasts (mostly The Strange Case of Starship Iris)
- From buzzfeed, 27 Podcasts You Should Listen To In 2017
Which reminds me, I've been listening to The Strange Case of Starship Iris and it's really lots of fun. The first episode drags a bit, but once there's more than a cast of two (from episode two), the dialogue bounces along, and the world building opens up. The story is building f/f UST between Violet and Arkady, it has a trans character and a gender fluid character, and I really like the crew of the Rumor. Would recommend.

You can listen here: The Strange Case of Starship Iris

For non-listeners, there's a transcript of Episode One, which isn't the best episode but it sets up the dynamic between the two characters well:

- Early breaking meme for 2017: I LIK THE BREAD, from Health Inspectors of Reddit, what's the worst violation you've ever seen?:
My stepdad used to be a baker in an authentic recreation of an 18th century New French fortress. Because they sell bread to the public, the health inspector came by, and she was ripping into my stepdad for violations like the stonework walls, the doorless entranceways, or the lack of a mosquito zapper. He pointed out that they were following the highest standards except for things that would destroy the authenticity of this 18th-century bakery. The health inspector relented and agreed to give him a pass after verifying the food storage area was secure. They went to the shed, which was a doorless building attached to the bakery. As the health inspector went in, there happened to be an escaped cow licking all of the loaves. My stepdad could only say, "Honestly, this never happens." They passed the health inspection.

tl;dr: Health inspector witnesses escaped farm animal licking all the bread in a bakery, passes health inspection anyway

State of the Dwircle
Hello people from the friending meme! Hello people not from the friending meme! HELLO EVERYONE.

I have an intro post about me and where I live: right here.

I realised my sticky post doesn't have a lot of personal information, so I updated it with this:
Things to know about me: I'm queer, I'm fat and body-positive, I'm Australian, I'm left-leaning in a big way. I was born in 1971 so I'm basically old as balls. I'm cis-female, white, the daughter of an Italian immigrant.Fannishly, I'm multifannish, I multiship. I love gen, slash, femslash and het. You can track my preferences through my Dear Author tag, here.

So. That was a thing I needed to do, and now it's done.

ETA: I meant to also say that though I pretty much give access to everyone, it's done with no expectation of reciprocity.

State of the garden
Lots of spinach, which is great, because I crave that mineral. I think it's low-key bolting? But I keep chopping bits off and eating it voraciously, so it's working out. Some of the pea vines died, but we're still getting plenty of snow peas. [personal profile] lilacsigil cut the coriander back murderously hard, but it's springing back fast.

Tomatoes are running so, so late; we've only just got flowers in the last week. The button squash are titchy but flowering, and we've got baby zucchini that's looking promising. It was a really cool run up through November, and things are sloooow. But I fed everything again yesterday, and we've got hot days coming so I'm hopeful. The basil is doing great! And we put in a tarragon plant, because there was a space on the fenceline and tarragon will be handy. None of the capsicum seedlings made it, so that's a thing we can put where the celery was. And soon we'll have a space when the beets are finished, because I don't think we'll replant them - I did it originally for the greens, so we'd have a pick-and-eat green between autumn's bok choy and summer's lettuce, but they got tough fast. Though, apparently you can steam/saute the leaves? That would possibly be nice and tasty, but now I have spinach and spinach is the superior green for me. (I've had so many weird cravings since I was sick in November - spinach and salmon and squid, oh my. Alliterative cravings, that's me.)

I wish we were warm enough for a curry tree. No, actually, I will forgo curry leaves for cooler weather.

State of Writing
- [community profile] fandom_stocking got extended, yay! I think the Christmas weekend really messed up people's schedules because I wasn't the only gobsmacked by the date creeping up on me. We've got till the eleventh, now, apparently. This is good, because I am disorganised but I want to stuff stockings.

Next up for me is going to be editing and posting some of the NaNo fics I wrote. (And wtf-ing at them, too, because I was writing with a fever and I know it's going to be weird in there.)

State of the Big Scary World
For the new people, since the US election, I try to pass on various activism links, even though I'm not from the US because I feel like that's a positive thing I can do. A lot of them come from [community profile] thisfinecrew, which is an excellent resource, if you haven't heard of it.

- From [community profile] thisfinecrew: Action and community Challenge: Call your reps about the ACA, which is encouraging and has a step by step action plan. I can't call, but I can appreciate an excellent action plan and share it around.
- from [personal profile] snickfic who said "Re:act is a weekly email newsletter full of info and suggestions for actions to take in response:" re:act.

State of yarning
While I have prednisolone-brain, I'm crocheting and crocheting and crocheting. It's very soothing. I have gathered up a collection of cozy murder TV on Netflix, and I put on a show and I crochet into the night.

My cozy murder schedule:
Shetland (aka Scottish murder) (Actually, this is my favourite of the cozy murder TV lineup and I've started being sparing with it because there's not much of it. Yet.)
Hinterland (aka Welsh murder)
Granchester (aka English country garden murder)
The Tunnel (aka on the dotted line French/English murder) (Clémence Poésy is in it playing a delightfully prickly, possibly non-neurotypical French detective and I love her.)

I've tried and not clicked with:
River (aka I see dead people murder, nothing wrong with that, but it didn't work for me)
Wallander (aka you're too smart to be this stupid about your diabetes murder)
Marcella (aka can we stop mental illness as a plot device ffs murder)
Paranoia (aka I wish I would watch a female detective in her late thirties do her job and not be all about her biological clock murder) (I'm particularly mad about this one because Indira Varma, omg, she's so beautiful, I want to watch her solve crimes.)

I do most of my yarn networking on FB (and ravelry: [ravelry.com profile] dansnark), and the current fad is these hats with a hole at the top for your hair - messy bun hats or pony tail hats. Hat aren't my usual thing to make - I make blankets and stuff for peoples' babies - but I tried one, and they're a really fun, short project. So I've made a bunch in the last week. It's hilarious to me because (a) it's summer here, and (b) I have close cropped hair anyway so they're useless to me. I'm showing them to people here, though, and they seem to think they're a good idea. Maybe I'll set a trend? Anyway, here are some good patterns that worked for me:

- Mango Tree Crafts messy bun hat - top down, worked around an hair-elastic. It's a yarn-eater, but it works up fast.
- Simplicity Bun Hat - top down. It doesn't work around a hair elastic, but you could easily do that - I think they work better with that stretch, honestly. The ribbing on the brim looks really good, especially if you're working in one colour.
- Bonfire Babe messy bun hat - this one works from the brim up, and either my foundation HDC is too wonky or they work very loose, because it came out huuuuuuge. So I frogged it, but I'm going to try it again with a smaller hook because it's super pretty.

And I think that's about it for me. *waves hello again to all the new folks*

VOLTSWAN

Dec. 24th, 2016 04:27 pm
st_aurafina: Platypus headshot (Platypus)
On the drive to one of the bigger rural centres we can shop at, there's a wetland where black swans nest. The last couple of times we've been past there's been this massive, and I mean, MASSIVE swan standing on a nest. Like, amazingly huge, you can see it from much further back than you'd expect. Swans' nests are reedy piles of grass floating in the water, so it looks like the swan is standing on a pedestal, like a mighty statue to honor the swan gods.

Anyway, the other day, we drove past and instead of one giant swan, there were five swans on the nest, standing in this weird pentagonal arrangement facing each other. Theory: giant swan? Five swans put together into one mighty swan. Possibly for great justice, but I don't know enough about Voltron to justify this part of my theory.

State of me
I had to slow my prednisolone wean - the shakiness and early morning mania and other weirdness was getting too much, so I slowed to 5mg per week, per what the doctors said if I was feeling the 10mg weekly drop too much. I'm not sure if I'm starting to get the moon face or if it's just that I had my hair all cropped off and I have a round face anyway. But wow, I'm bruising up a treat. Also wow, it's nice to have knees. I haven't taken any NSAIDs in December at all. I put them back in the cupboard.

I got my Yuletide fic to the place where I want it, which is a big relief. I didn't get time to write any treats, for which I feel bad, but it has been the worst of Novembers and Decembers. I'm planning to dive into [community profile] fandom_stocking as soon as I'm through the retail Christmas panic times. Which aren't too bad today - I'm actually writing this at work. (ETA: Finishing at home, though! It got busier.)

State of the cat
He's doing great! His CK levels are still high, so we're doing sub-q fluids twice a day until next Wednesday, and he's getting to a stage of wellness where he's pretty much done with our stupid medical stuff and puts up a decent fight. We are up to this, though! And he forgives very fast. Hopefully the blood test on Wednesday will show a reduction in CK which means the snake venom is no longer breaking down muscle tissue and then we can get onto finding out what his renal situation is, and if there was damage. Hopefully not. He's lost so much weight, poor darling, both from not eating and from the muscle waste, but he's working hard on rectifying it. He is a cat who lunches! He demands it! And his fur is growing back in all the places where he got clipped to have cannulae, so he's got all these cute fuzzy patches on him. I took a video of him walking meditatively in his wheel to show the vets, because they've only seen him sick and miserable and immobile. I wish I could figure out how to post the video here! But image hosting is so complicated now. I miss photobucket. Here's a photo, anyway:

Oh, oh, house of [personal profile] sharpest_asp, [personal profile] ilyena_sylph and [personal profile] killing_rose!! I got your AMAZING card - thank you so much for the well wishes, and for the big smile it gave both of us.

Squids!

st_aurafina: Harold Finch's face (POI: Harold)
Insta Rec
I wrote a Supergirl fic of necessary hugs: Lights Will Guide You Home (Kara Danvers/Daisy Johnson, General) and guess what, [personal profile] monanotlisa wrote a beautiful and adorable coda for it: Hide Away in Daylight (Kara Danvers/Daisy Johnson, General) Everything is squishy hugs and nothing hurts.

The State of Me
Oh, man, I don't know if it's the prednisolone taper, but I'm so woozy and full of fogs. It might be that my GI tract got so inflamed that I couldn't absord oral meds, so now I'm basically re-establishing my Pristiq and other meds all at once? I'm foggy and I have a concentration window of about two minutes, and my balance is kind of fucked. Not very me at all. To be fair, my suffering is not great. But I feel like a balloon animal. Maybe a dachshund. Maybe a giraffe?

Oh, but [personal profile] lilacsigil has just come back from the street to tell me that the cafe that makes the great salt and pepper squid has it on their specials board today, so I am getting squiddy with my lunch. I have such fish cravings since I've been sick. Fish and nuts. All the oils. Get in my body, oils. And squids.

NaNo Round-up
I'm picking through the scattered debris of my NaNo adventure to see what actually happened in that weird month.

- Finished the POI Five Things fic, though one of the parts is decidedly odd with only some good bits. The good bits might sprout something better, though, so I shall see. Total word count: 31,767.
- Finished the POI Sentinel/Guide fic, though I think it needs some fleshing out in parts. I quite like this one, actually? It's iddy as all get out and has lots of hugging and touching and bonding. I think, once I've got my Yuletide sorted, I'll work on this one. Total word count: 16,229
- Wrote one chapter of the Bucky fic. It was a weird but necessary chapter. 7266 words, taking that fic to a total of 62,044, holy shit.
- The Supergirl fic of necessary hugs, which I've already posted. (2032 words)
- The POI fixit fic is where it got weird and throw-words-at-the-wall-ish. I'm a little scared to look. I had a fever. 13,828 words, some of which may not be consecutive or legible.
- Last minute desperation words, Harold Finch competence porn. 2602 words. I want to finish this, because it's fun, and because I like exploring Harold's hidden skillsets.

A sad but also hopeful essay, and this got me:
But listen, love, because I need to remind you of something and I need you to remember it extra well over the next four years: This is our street. It is our street. Self-care and soothing
- This twitter thread about a comicbook store helper and a tiny new Supergirl baby gay made me cry with happiness and wish there'd been this kind of visibility for me in the eighties. It's so important. (Please don't kill Maggie, please don't kill Alex, please.)

- From Buzzfeed, Ocean's Eight is looking like the best movie thing that's ever happened omg: Based On Set Photos It Looks Like “Ocean’s Eight” Will Be The Greatest Movie In The History Of Movies

- Journaling Practice - Peony and Parakeet is a art-journalling blog I'm fond of, and she posted about being an introvert and an artist, which is something that I clicked with. Her blog is a good, thoughtful, mindful kind of place for art stuff.

- From [personal profile] umadoshi, (Almost) Every SFF Adaptation Coming to Television and Movie Theaters!
This is a weird and amazing list of things. And oh, wow that Camelot procedural series. It will surely be terrible and I will watch the crap out of it.

Squid ETA: It was delicious but a Pharmacy Board inspector showed up, which seems like an odd coincidence. Will investigate further tomorrow.

I something something made it to 50K in NaNo. I don't know why I didn't quit, and I don't know what I actually wrote, and what are words anyway? In the last desperate hours, I wrote some fic about Harold Finch feeding a kitten with an eyedropper.

I finished some stuff. I wrote some crack. I need to get onto Yuletide now.

state of the meatsack: )

omg I just found a post I wrote in the first week:
talk of pee, weight-loss, generally a bit deluded )
Wow, I am so much less off my face now. I was really sick. :O

I WOULD FREAKING WATCH THE SHIT OUT THIS SHOW, with all the ladies running heists and shacking up together and why can't this be on tv why.

Oldie but a goodie, and the casting makes me laugh. Also, really skillful, you know? It pleases me.

- FringeMusic107 is a youtube channel that makes mixes of TV themes, and I found them to be really good writing/studying music, especially the Person of Interest themes. I played Harold's Theme a lot through NaNo.

Anyway. I am not dead. The world goes on. We are a great team. I love youse guys. <3
st_aurafina: (NaNo: Sleep)
So, anyway, I got sick. Something bit me, I don't know what, but I woke up with a leg the colour and shape of a hotdog and a fever that made me get lost in my own bedroom. I mean, it obviously wasn't deadly. But it sure was germy because I'm infected.

I hate being so sick that all you can do is sit and cry in bewilderment. I am really bad at being that sick.

Then there was interesting investigations with the doctor, and pen marks all over the biggest and reddest part of my leg, and I'm on antibiotics, but wow, I feel terrible. I can feel every lymph node in my body right now, istg. And yet, I'm still at work because people in my trade are notoriously lousy at taking days off. (It's hard to justify the cost, plus my locum has her childcare all sorted out, and I mean, it's not like I'm stuck in bed or anything. Ugh, self-care, why is it so hard?)

ETA: since I left this post hanging, my leg blew up even more, and I've been in hospital on IV antibiotics. They're not admitting me, yet, but it's possible if I don't show a vast improvement. At the moment, they've sent me home to stay 'in bed with toilet privileges'. Some hours later, I am disappoint that (a) I am not instantly better and (b) staying in bed when you have to is a whole other extremely tedious thing.

At least I am very lucky to have [personal profile] lilacsigil to brain some sense into me and to bring me meds and coffee and a muffin and to remind me that it's okay not to be at work.

Sea life, squee life:
EVNautilus - this youtube channel is soothing and delightful, for me, anyway. It's a bunch of science nerds of various flavours watching the feeds from the Exploration Vessel Nautilus as it explores the ocean floor off Vancouver Island's west coast. The scientists geek out in delightful ways over cute octopi and pooping sea pigs and this one time a sperm whale came to check out the submersible. I find it very cheering. Nautilus Live is the home for the project if you want to read more about it.
Some of my favourite videos:
Rare Sperm Whale Encounter (They're so excited!)

Ugh, I have to go back to the hospital at 8:30 tonight to get more ABs, and again tomorrow and it's very tedious. And I thought I'd get so much NaNo done, but strangely enough, when you're sick and uncomfortable, your concentration is not great, and I am probably never going to catch my word debt from being sick all week and. I mean. Honestly, I'm really bad at this shit. My leg seems to be less swollen, though? Still really red, but instead of a red shiny hotdog, it's more like an old shrivelled wrinkly hotdog.

Son of ETA: I forgot that I caught a Diglett at the hospital!! Diglett is so ridiculously cheering.

1. I switched on cross-posting to Tumblr. I hope it works! (Totally inspired by [personal profile] muccamukk who is getting [community profile] femslashex organised for this year.) I already have cross-posting set up for [livejournal.com profile] comicstore_news but I want to be more integrated here.

2. [community profile] femslashex, a femslash exchange that is lots of fun! The new schedule is up, and nominations will open soon.

3. I did Camp NaNo. I wrote 30K of Person of Interest fixit fic. Now I must finish it. I'm starting to think I'm a serial non-finisher of long fics. (Would anyone be interested in Ameripicking?)

4. Imzy is a thing suddenly, and might be the next thing fandom moves to after Tumblr. It seems to have comments that thread, and a generally more friendly atmosphere, though there is some question about whether they'll allow NC-17 art works. (The answer from the creators right now seems to be yes for fanworks, no for pr0n, which might not make for the best fandom environment? But they're talking about it, at least.) My personal comm is here - that's what people seem to be doing, since you can't follow individual profiles just yet.

Some others I've followed:
femslash_frivolity
fail_fandom_anon
pokemongo (still very quiet)
misbehaving_muses (This is a place to vent, complain, or brainstorm when your muses refuse to cooperate.)
personofinterest (But I don't know if it's a fannish comm or what.)

And a few I found that other people might be interested in:
cap_ironman
vorkosigan
forever_tv
babylon_5
the_mentalist
tragic_magic_ninjas - Naruto comm

Porn/erotic art policy + feature requests on Imzy - this is more discussion from the creators about the subject, as well as news about features to come.

I have a bunch of invites, if anyone wants. Leave a comment, or PM if you don't want your email visible in a comment. (ETA: I'm out of invites now, but [personal profile] lilacsigil has a heap, so your invite might come from her.)

5. Discharging some linkspam

Meet Fu Yuanhui, The Most Lovable Athlete At The Rio Olympics (Omg, she is adorable and adorkable. There are gifs there.)

Why tourists are flocking to this Australian hotel room Spoilers: because it was in Free! Eternal Summer. I love how accurately the room and the hotel were drawn, though. That's gorgeous and I can understand why fans would want to stay there.

[tumblr.com profile] fuckyeahtarotdecks, because if, like me, you have banned yourself from buying more decks that will just sit on the shelf, you can at least look at some pretty art.

[etsy.com profile] ChrysalisStudios has beautiful jewellery made from actual insects (collected from butterfly sanctuaries. (I really like this: Lime green butterfly wing pendant)

[etsy.com profile] tcustom makes anatomical lockets, which are sort of gruesome and sort of cool. I like the layers on this one: Burgess shale fossil necklace
st_aurafina: Agent Carter holding a walkie talkie (Agent Carter: Peggy walkie talkie)
[community profile] ssrconfidential is up, so if you want to read lots and lots of Agent Carter fic, hie you to the archive. The collection is here.

BUT, first go and read my gift, because it is adorable and ferocious and starts with a tiny Peggy Carter running away to join the circus. Ack, so beautiful, and so sad at the end:
Four Times Peggy Tried to Run Away (and the one time it finally worked), (G, Michael Carter & Peggy Carter)

Some other recs from randomly browsing the collection:
Beautiful Ana-centric story, from her rescue, to post-injury recovery. And Zsa-Zsa Gabor!:
All of Me, (Teen, Ana Jarvis/Edwin Jarvis)

Daniel Sousa and Jack Thompson negotiating a relationship, with period-specific awkwardness. I loved the contrast between private!Jack and public!Jack, and how baffled poor Daniel is.
Sweater Weather (Teen, Daniel Sousa/Jack Thompson)

Beautiful art for Peggy and Jason:
Not The Last Dance This Time (Teen, Peggy Carter/Jason Wilkes)

Other rando linkspams:
From Ravelry: Ammonite crochet pattern: Built up on the Fibonacci sequence, this is so beautiful! If I knew Tunisian crochet, I would so be making one of these.

From Buzzfeed: Canadians taste fairy bread for the first time; have a lot of feelings - Fairy bread is an Aussie thing: bread and butter with sprinkles. This video is tragic and triumphant at the same time, as the Canadians struggle to understand the phenomenon, and then see the true beauty of the thing.

From Etsy: Tiger shark tooth cufflinks. I just feel that this is a thing that John Reese would wear. Okay, maybe not, but he totally should wear them, then use them to cut through ropes and escape to rescue everyone from the dark dystopia that S5 has become. /bad fic ideas I have in the middle of the night.

#starringjohncho Starring John Cho. Some freaking genius shops John Cho into movie posters to counter the argument that people can't imagine an Asian-American lead actor. (Not going to lie - I would go and see all of these.)

From [personal profile] umadoshi: Depression-Busting Exercise Tips For People Too Depressed To Exercise - the thing I liked about this article was the concept of listening to your own instincts, not measuring your abilities against other people's. Took me a long time to get to that point in my own head.

Rando cool tumblr: Bowie and Nudibranchs. "It works to such an uncanny degree it’s hard not to imagine that a young Bowie received an illustrated book of nudibranchia at a young age, and spent the rest of his career mining the pages for new looks."

Balm for that post that continually circulates on facebook about how things were so much better before iPhones: We Weren’t That Resilient.

ASL: Amber Galloway Gallego signs Hilltop Hoods - ASL translator interprets Aussie hip-hop classic 'The Nosebleed Section'.

Peak country headline has been reached: Earless nanny goat births triplets after bee attack (CW: animal harm of the accidental kind, involving bees. Goat survives, goes on to epic birth story.)

Asshole birds: Do birds of prey spread bushfires? (Answer: only in Australia. Because Straya.)

Spider-Man - threat or menace? JK Simmons is mind-blowingly ripped. J Jonah is ready for action, apparently.

This messed up experiment: Shocking video of Electric eel. Because the thing to do is to make a fake alligator head, line it with LEDs and poke an electric eel. For science.
