2020 Friending Meme

This helped me a lot in early 2017 when Trump had just been elected, and I am hoping we can get the same feeling going again, after the UK election was such a shock.

Connections are important when it feels like the world is getting darker. Fandom is a huge and strong network of people. We don't always get along, but we're stronger together.

Make new friends, reconnect with those who have drifted, enlarge your circle, and know you are not alone.

To play, cut and paste this text into a comment, fill out the details and tell us about yourself. Then go find new people to add.

If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, you can sign up for one here.
If you're new to Dreamwidth and you've left OpenID comments on DW before, you can link your IDs here: How can I claim my OpenID account with my Dreamwidth account?

Play nice.

And feel free to promote wherever you like with this handy box of linkage:

ETA on Sat morning AEST: This text box was functionally busted a few hours ago, so if you grabbed the code then, you might have an image with no link. It's fixed now, with all new alt text for screen readers. If your promo link is just an image, please replace the code with what's in the box now. Thanks for all the posts, btw! Thanks. I just have the fancy-coloured one with the face blaze now; lost his brother some time ago. Fergus is now a senior gent and expects his nightly medication (I hide it in infant soy formula, he thinks he's getting a treat). I've got another younger rat who's not in the picture; must get a new one of him too.

DW username: dine

Preferred pronouns: she/her

Other platforms (tumblr, twitter, etc): none, really

Active/primary interests or fandoms: all of them? it's been said that "dine reads everything" and that's mostly true. I'm currently reading in a variety of fandoms, but spent years with a primary fandom of popslash, and then hockey RPF. no clue where my obsessive interest shall land next, but it'll be fun to find out

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: I've been doing this fandom thing for 20 years, and have been involved in many many fandoms; visible on mailing lists, LJ (then DW) and attending fancons (Escapade and now Bitchin' Party) over the years

I post about: daily life & work (ACME Looniversity, an Early Head Start program), my cat Olivier, friends & family, hockey, a little political stuff, LGBT issues, links to stuff I find online, fic recs in a variety of fandoms, amusing or cute animal-related pictures

I post/check my feed: I post daily, and check my feed multiple times a day

I want to find people that post about:
their lives, things that matter to them, links to interesting things

I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW, primarily. I occasionally follow links to other platforms, but am not active on twitter or tumblr

My blog is: mostly public. I rarely lock entries

Anything else you need to know about me: I'm fat, live in Oregon, have some health/mobility issues but manage, have an odd sense of humour, am definitely on the left politically, and despite most people's initial opinion of me, am Slytherin. I've no clue why folks don't pick up on that more quickly

dine: (santaJC - flambeau)

[personal profile] dine 2019-12-21 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
hee! yes, yes indeedy. I was sucked into popslash fairly early on, sometime in 2000 maybe? I know I joined LJ in early 2001, and that was as a result of folks in dS who were also just discovering the joys of NSYNC (and BSB to a lesser degree). I admit to a major adoration to the dorks in NSYNC, but often enjoyed BSB as well. I collected an astonishing amount of swag, attended a couple concerts, and still snap to attention when I come across a mention of any of the guys online

[personal profile] coulditbemagic 2019-12-21 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea people other than me even had those kinds of thoughts and dreams, damn! I was definitely more BSB than NSYNC, and more so into the UK boybands of the time, Take That & Boyzone mostly and I still have the same reaction with Take That - I still actively follow them, and the ex-members, still go to the shows and still sit up and pay attention when they're mentioned. It's like my happy place
dine: (home for Xmas)

[personal profile] dine 2019-12-21 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
there was a pretty large contingent of popslashers onLJ back in the day, and I'm lucky enough to still be in connection with some of them - distant in many cases now, but good friends with a few folks still.

I know someone in Toronto who is very into Take That, but somehow the group never really crossed my horizon. but I'm superglad you have that happy place

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Doctor Who (Classic and New, a lot of different Doctors and companions). I'm super into reading, especially science fiction and fantasy, and am particularly fannish/obsessive about the Wayfarers series, The Imperial Radch, The Machineries of the Empire, and This Is How You Lose the Time War, and things that Aliette de Bodard writes. I listen to a lot of podcasts, both non-fictional and fictional, and my current favourite podcast dramas include The Bright Sessions, The Far Meridian, The Strange Case of the Starship Iris, and the very recently discovered (but immediately adored) Penumbra Podcast.

In non-fannish interests, I also really like ballet and dancing, and music. I love history and sciences, and I'm learning programming. I also crochet, and enjoy spending time in the nature.

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: You've read my fic, seen me commenting on yours, seen me commenting in someone else's journal, or you've seen my recs in [community profile] tardis_library or comments in [profile] podcast_joy. Or because I've participated in the Write Every Day challenge for years and occasionally hosted it in my journal.
I post about: Fannish stuff, writing, and personal life. Personal life stuff goes mostly under friends/access lock. RL stuff includes some frank discussion of mental health issues, but I try to keep potentially triggering or lengthy things under the cut. I do reading Wednesdays every now and then (not always on a Wednesday), I sometimes post about fanfic challenges and share fic, and try to remember to share all my fics in my journal. Personal things include anything from ballet progress and what I've baked recently to Figuring Out My Life.
I post/check my feed: I check my feed a few times a day, at least. Posting varies from a few posts a day to one or two a month. On the average it's probably 1-2 posts a week?
I want to find people that post about: I'd always love to have more people who share my fandoms, especially the rarer ones ie. the book and podcast ones (or more Doctor Who fans who adore the Second Doctor era). But I'd also really love to find people who I share other interests with, who post about their lives, thoughts, hobbies, pets, etc., even if we don't directly share fandoms, as long as we share other interests. I also love having people who rec interesting books, podcasts etc. or share interesting links.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: Dreamwidth. I have an LJ with the same username, but I'm slower at commenting and don't check my feed nearly as often. I always love it when people read and comment on my fics. If you're on Goodreads and want more friends, you can ask me for my profile there.
My blog is: Fannish and general media stuff (like what I've been reading) is usually public, personal/RL stuff is usually locked.
Anything else you need to know about me: I'm queer (I don't know if lesbian or bi or pan is the right word, so I just say queer), feminist, politically left-wing, though I don't post a lot about politics because I get easily depressed by some topics. I'm from Finland and my native language is Finnish, but I post in English and am very comfortable with it. I love languages.

I have some problems with focus and managing my life and time and thoughts, so if I forget to reply to a comment, don't comment on a super-important post or forget to do something I've said I would do, it's not personal, it's just my brain failing at things. It's okay to remind me.

Also, if you want to be friends, please comment or send me a PM or something! It doesn't have to be anything huge, but I like to say hi, at least, and possibly know why someone wants to be friends, especially before I grant access. If you just want to subscribe to my public content, you don't need to say anything, but if you're hoping for mutuals and access, it's a good idea to say something because otherwise I may not get around to checking you out.

Hi, nice to meet you! I actually haven't read that series yet - I discovered Aliette de Bodard's fiction quite recently (I mean, I'd heard about her, but I think I started reading her stuff in 2018?) so I've still got a lot of ground to cover, but I've absolutely loved everything I've read by her. Mostly I've been reading the Xuya novellas, some short stories, and In the Vanishers' Palace, but I plan to read the Dominion of the Fallen series as soon as my current deluge of library loans lets up a bit. I'm sure after that I'll want to track down Obsidian and Blood, it sounds really interesting as well!

Also, yay Second and Fifth Doctor! Five is my other favourite after Two! :-)

Hee, in Finland we've clearly got lots of geeks. I was in the Dublin Worldcon this year, and Finns were the fourth biggest group of nationalities among the con members - pretty well for a North European nation of 5 million. :-) Anyway, hope you get to visit, this is a nice country (even if very dark at this time of year).

Second Doctor as in Patrick Troughton? Definitely, although I don't have the episodes in my brain. Also, he's the grandfather of Sam Troughton, one of my favourite actors.

I failed to mention that I enjoy ballet and dance, and old-style musicals.

And I'm Small_Hobbit on Goodreads if you want to check out my recent books.

[personal profile] auroracloud 2019-12-20 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, Troughton! I'm a fairly recent convert to Classic Who - it's not something that people know much in my country, so I only started watching it during the 2018 Twitch marathon, and during the few days when the Troughton era stories aired, I became obsessed. I enjoy most of other Classic Who as well, but at the moment the Second Doctor era is the only one where I've watched all the properly existing stories!

Yay for ballet, dance, and musicals! I also love musicals. Am a bit of a theatre nut in general, though it's been dormant compared to my other obsessions in the past couple of years. Do you also dance yourself, or do you just enjoy watching ballet/dance? I love seeing ballet, but I also do adult ballet as a hobby. :-)

I'd be happy to be DW friends if you want!

Hi! I'm planning to start actually posting about podcasts more now - I've got some podcast posts in my head, once I get myself down to actually write them!

I recommend both of those very much, they're fabulous! Hope you like them.

If you don't mind answering, how creepy or grim are they?

Usually for anything that I listen, the answer is "not very" because I'm super bad at dealing with horror stuff and not good with really grim, dark or violent stuff. The Far Meridian has some psychological distress, mental health problems and occasional creepiness, but more in a fantasy and psychological than horror vein, if you get what I mean.

The Penumbra Podcast, I'm not far into it yet, but they have several different storylines in one podcast - both stand-alones and long continuing series - and they vary a lot in content. They're extremely good with content warnings in the episode notes, however. There have been some stand-alones I've skipped because the description said that they're horror and/or very dark. Out of the long-running series, I haven't yet listened to the Second Citadel stuff, but the Juno Steel stories are like queer space noir (well, Martian-settlement noir) with both humor and dark stuff. The noir genre does bring some dark and violent things with it, but they're usually not too bad by my standards, and I'm quite sensitive. I feel like the humor tempers the darker stuff a bit. Again, I'd recommend checking out the individual episode notes. The story I'm currently listening to, Juno Steel and The Day that Wouldn't Die, is super creepy and distressing by my standards, though, and I'm having to listen to it in short pieces so that it doesn't affect me too much. So if you're sensitive to creepy stuff, I recommend caution with that one.

Haha, it sounds like we have similar tastes, at least in this respect! Thank you so much for the detailed description, I will definitely be checking out the Far Meridian (I really love lighthouses, for one thing), and might use my recently-adopted approach of reading transcripts before listening for Penumbra.

That can work! And with regards to the story I mentioned earlier - Juno Steel and the Day That Wouldn't Die - I finished listening to it now, and without spoiling I want to add that it doesn't stay as creepy all the way through as it is for a portion of the story. The ending is still emotionally intense, but in a different way. They're super diligent about giving content warnings, which is good.

[personal profile] auroracloud 2019-12-22 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
More people for book content is always fun! Hope you'll enjoy those books, I loved all three of them. (With the Wayfarers, it's good to not expect an action-packed adventure like some people expect from space sci-fi; it's more about characters and the worldbuilding, though there's also some intense plot stuff going on at certain points. I absolutely love it, but some readers are surprised that it isn't more plot-heavy. And with Ninefox Gambit, be prepared that it takes a while to really understand what's going on, as it's the sort of book that drops you in the middle of a very unusual world without explaining a lot. You get the hang of it eventually. Not trying to scare you, I just figure it may help to know that in advance!)

My baking posts usually happen among the access-locked stuff, not because my baking is particularly secret but because I lock most RL content and it's usually happening in posts that have other RL stuff as well. Let you know if you'd like to have access! (And you can always do so later as well, if you're unsure now.)

I realize they're not among your newest fic, but anyway, whee! I'm always happy to get to know more Doctor Who fans and Becky Chambers fans. And I see you're into history stuff as well, as am I. Definitely subscribing!

I'm here for all things Doctor Who, although I haven't seen any of the old series. My post is here and I have an About Me. Friends?

Looks like we have a lot of interests and such in common (and I'm always happy to give people ideas of what Classic Doctor Who to watch, if they're interested, though there's a whole lot I still haven't seen either - 26 years is a lot of time!). And I'm always into getting to know people who post about fandom things, books, and pets! :-)

Sorry for the delay in replying, things have been a bit busy with Christmas and Yuletide! I've both written and commented on a bunch of Doctor Who things, so maybe you've seen me there! Anyway, would be lovely to get to know you, it looks like we have some things in common!

Sorry for my delay in getting back to you. Between Christmas, Yuletide, and family visits, I haven't had enough energy lately to focus on checking out new people, so I took a while to get back to the most recent comments here. Anyway, you seem nice and we seem to have a lot of shared interests, so I'd be glad to get to know you. I'm not sure how often I post about music, but I do love it, many different kinds of it, and I post about it sometimes at least. :-)

Commenting to let you know I subscribed! I will leave it up to you as to whether or not you want to share access in turn. I don't have many access-locked posts, but I have used it once or twice.

I am adding you because Doctor Who is one of my forever-fandoms. I'm actually rather behind on New Who, not having seen every episode of S10 because reasons and not having seen any of Thirteen yet, but I'll get around to it one day. I'm also interested in one day learning more about Old Who, particularly stuff that might be interesting in terms of the history of Gallifrey and the Time Lords, though I'm aware that the information is rather sparse and make-it-up-as-we-go.

Also we made very similar posts about this friending meme I noticed. So again hi!

[personal profile] auroracloud 2020-01-02 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there, sorry for the delay, Christmas and Yuletide and family visits had me swamped for a bit, and I've had more responses than I expected in this friending meme (guess it comes from being among the first to post?). Anyway, it's always nice to get to know people with shared fandoms - as long as you don't mind certain differences of opinion, such as that S10 is my favourite Twelfth Doctor season and Bill will always be my true ultimate Twelve companion and I don't share any of your ships except Amy/Rory. And Jack/Martha a bit. (I'm kinda bad at shipping het anyway, to be honest, whether canon or not. Often the character combinations just don't work for me, and I have issues with a lot of the typical m/f tropes and dynamics.)

I'm always happy to babble about Old Who and convert people to it and so on (or at least, reasonably often).

Active fandoms
These include Supernatural [Crowley, King of Hell] The Walking Dead, apocalypses in general. I've edited this to say I've enjoyed a lot of fandoms and my brain freezes when I try to list them. These are examples.
I chat on my blog, Raised By Rats, and on FB now and then. I also go to conventions but it's been a while. Last one was the Worldcon in Helsinki. I love Finland!)
I post about: Real life, politics, writing, books, trans stuff, rats and other furry creatures.
I post/check my feed: All the time. I live on my own - never have found the right guy; perhaps he is fictional? - so I interact mostly online.
I want to find people that post about: Their lives/countries/philosophies, fandom in general, conservation, books, gaming. I like interacting with interesting, different people.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW or FB.
My blog is: some public but a lot is friends-only, especially if I’m bitching about my job.
Anything else you need to know about me: (https://rattfan.dreamwidth.org/380459.html#cutid1
I'm Australian, live in Perth, WA and prefer a fantasy life to the real one, even if it's a zombie apocalypse. I watch a lot of genre fiction so basically if it's on Netflix Australia, there's a good chance I'll have seen it. And of course there are less reputable sources! I'm a roleplay gamer and also fond of Cards Against Humanity, so that should give you an idea of the fine, upstanding kind of person you're dealing with.

I’m kind of obsessed with Crowley from Supernatural, but not into the main leads. When I write fanfic, it’s usually Crowley/Bobby Singer on A03. Before that it was Babylon 5 and the Psi Corps. I am/was a professional writer, but have not written anything worth speaking of for a couple of years. Writer’s block/depression/too caught up with gender transition, who knows? I keep fanfic very separate from pro writing but will give friends my A03 name with the understanding they don’t mention it on DW or FB.

Here is a old picture of two of my rats. Fergus and Ridley.

I'm always glad to hear perspectives on fandom and being fannish from elsewhere in the world. (I get that mostly at the fair share of non-North American Worldcons I've been to.) Planning for Wellington next July. How about you?

Well, I haven't ruled Wellington out yet, let's say, though funds are very tight at the moment. It'll be annoying if I can't go, considering it'll be cheaper than any other Worldcon I've been to except Melbourne! I've got the long service leave available from work, everything, except *money*!

But hopefully.

>> Well, I haven't ruled Wellington out yet, [...] I've got the long service leave available from work, everything, except *money*! <<

Hope the first part of the year is financially kind enough to you that you feel you can afford the trip. It's the fans that make Worldcon what it is, and I always root for more local fans to find ways to get there.

Sorry, this got buried in messages. I saw it again when I was going through to clear out my inbox!
I've been to the USA four times; 1995, 2004, 2008 and 2013. Dragoncon in Atlanta (where I also visited Florida to see Canaveral space centre), Boston Worldcon, Denver Worldcon and San Antonio Worldcon.
It's impossible to cover those trips in a short message (g) as I moved around a fair bit as well as those focus points. I have friends in Denver whom I visited each time, no matter where else I was headed and also a couple of times people in California. The train trips were fantastic - well, the times I had a sleeper, they were. The USA was just so....big. Snow capped mountains from the train windows in midsummer! Oh, and I also went to Washington twice to visit the Smithsonian. Those were sort of pilgrimages.
ng_moonmoth: The Moon-Moth (Default)

[personal profile] ng_moonmoth 2020-01-28 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Then our paths have crossed already. I was in Denver and San Antonio.

>> The USA was just so....big <<

And Australia isn't? Or is it that the US is big enough to look big by Australian standards? Interesting to think about either way.

>> Oh, and I also went to Washington twice to visit the Smithsonian. Those were sort of pilgrimages. <<

Maybe you'll do it again for next year's Worldcon.

We originally were thinking of checking out Australia this year as part of our Southern Hemisphere trip. That was before the events of the past couple of months. I mentioned that I thought visiting Australia in July would feel too much to me like visiting New Orleans five or six months after Hurricane Katrina. Too much of the population has been affected by the tragedy for me to want that in my memories of the place.

Hope you and yours are doing OK and taking care of one another and your friends.

Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Gundam, JRPGs, Mecha Anime, Dragalia Lost, medieval romances,

You had me at the first several entries but then the medieval romances snuck up from behind and clubbed me right in the back of the head! (But, like, in an appealing way.)

I took my leave of Dragalia Lost (well, for now) because I developed some spending issues with it early last year, but I'm still very much in love with FEH as well as Fire Emblem as a whole. I'm also real big on medieval fantasy and romance. I've been longingly glancing at the Iron-Blooded Whatever Gundam series on Netflix, but as I was toting two jobs until very recently, watching much of anything wasn't really doable. That's changed, though, so I will have to give it a try soon!

Other platforms: I post on AO3 with the same username. I have a Twitter account as tjerrian but it's not this "end" of fandom.

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Final Fantasy (mainly original/II/IV/V/VII, Dissidia series, Brave Exvius ... someday I may get off my arse and play XV; I can carry along with the franchise as a whole), Saint Seiya of all varieties of the franchise, Mega Man X, Langrisser (relatively recent), Bravely series, ancient Egypt, an endless stream of (A)D&D and -adjacent ttrpgs as well as Exalted, Shadowrun, Legend of the Five Rings. Gundam (00/Wing/the Cosmic Era material; I am the Glory of Losers and Frozen Teardrop fan, yes). Fire Emblem fan (Awakening and Genealogy, in the main) but getting extremely selective as well as currently aggravated with the franchise. I tend towards archaeology, critters and dead folks, various crafty things. Jrpgs in general. There's more to things than this but I'm not good with long lists, especially in friending memes?

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: I've posted a fic on AO3, or turned up briefly on someone else's DW, or was in the EAD server until relatively recently; possibly because of extended DW reading circles, or you were looking up old original-fiction wank on FFA. I also run the [community profile] drabblesoup prompt comm.

I post about: Fandom -- for my own definition of "fandom", which is broader than some and includes "they found a new species of leptoceratopsian!", "a new tomb from Thebes!!!" and posting video game trailers from YouTube -- with occasional vague wharrgarbl about life kicking me down a hole or me scrambling after some project or another. Also complaining, because I'm good at that. Polls about what I should poke at next pop up with semi-frequency?

I post/check my feed: I check my feed several times or day or more. I fell off the trolley as far as posting goes for several reasons but have recently started to try to pick that up again.

I want to find people that post about: Fannish interests similar to my own, basically.

I am most interested in interacting with people on: Dreamwidth. That's why this friending meme is here, right?

My blog is: Public.

Anything else you need to know about me: I'm not much for shipping; it's definitely not why I'm in any fandom, and when I do have a ship it's not a driving reason for my fannishness so I may be a disappointment there? (I'm also bad enough at writing "shipfic" that I stopped really trying aeons ago, lol.) Gnashing of teeth on my DW about unidentifiable source materials is probably me banging my head against my own writing which I don't tend to post much about otherwise, unless I'm wharrgarbling at some franchise development or grumping in general. Which does happen on occasion, I'm not going to lie.

Other platforms (tumblr, twitter, etc): [tumblr.com profile] greaseonmymouth (I'm not super active on tumblr anymore because of time constraints - though since I'm on holiday right now there's a bit more activity on there atm.) [twitter.com profile] katrinilves (my twitter is professional rather than fandom, but not so professional it has no personality.) [archiveofourown.org profile] nerakrose
Active/primary interests or fandoms: harry potter is probably my most active (and currently most long-running) fandom. volstovic cycle. I tangent a lot of fandoms in that way where I enjoy the source material but don't create fanworks for it. other interests: publishing, writing, archaeology, languages/linguistics, reading (SFF, romance, queer stuff), knitting, creativity in general.
If you've seen me around, it's probably because: i've had this username and variations of on LJ and DW since 2006. I've modded fests before. I'm a member of [community profile] getyourwordsout though 2019 has been a very non-active year for me in the comm for life reasons.
I post about: my life, mostly. fandom when applicable (talk about fest entries I'm doing or fic I'm writing). I talk about my original writing as well. basically when I got my first LJ/DW accounts I was writing a paper diary every day and had been for years, but switched to writing them electronically instead. while my posts are not 'dear diary' type of posts, they do very much have that 'here's stuff that happened in my life' vibe rather than being discussion posts or fandom posts.
I post/check my feed: I read my flist daily but post maybe once or twice a week.
I want to find people that post about: life! I'm not super keen on fandom-only blogs because as much as it's true that what fanworks we create can tell a lot about ourselves, it doesn't tell *me* jack. I like to get to know people through what they tell me about their life in addition to whatever fandom content they want to share.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW. i don't use my twitter for fandom and I'm not super active on tumblr.
My blog is: friends only, with the rare public entry here and there. public entries tend to be fandom related when they happen.
Anything else you need to know about me: I moved to Scotland earlier this year to do a second master's degree (career change, sort of) and I talk about that a lot. it's also the number one reason why I never have time for anything (including reading and writing fic) these days. I will most likely not be great at commenting on your posts (though I do read them), partially because of that and partially because it takes me a while to feel like I can say anything (basically I never got out of the habit of lurking before striking up conversations). politically I'm very left-oriented but also I am a Scandinavian so that's like, very extremely socialist for some people who aren't Scandinavian. Until I moved to Scotland I'd only ever lived in Iceland, Denmark, and Finland. I'd like to stay in Scotland but we'll see how jobhunting goes when I've graduated. I'm also super duper queer. I have congenital hearing loss on both sides. I'm 32.

Do you have any Reese/Finch recs? I'm super into PoI and their dynamic, but as with most new fandoms getting into fic is always very daunting. (I say new as if it hasn't been years. I rewatched all of PoI earlier this year and died of feels.)

*high five* I love them so much!

This will be a very incomplete list since I don't want to overwhelm you...she says as her list gets longer and longer.

A lot of people start with astolat, my personal fave being Hamartia, because undercover dads with Leila.

Toft will give you all the feels. I must rec both Penetration Testing (CIA John seduces Harold) and A Field Guide to Common Birds in New York City (a great character study of Reese and mental health, and also way funnier than that sounds).

MnemonicMadness is incredible. Check out M47CHM4K1N6.exe, Machine PoV running exquisitely detailed simulations on how best to get them together.

elbowsinsidethedoor has a special talent for AUs. See House of Wren for tailor!Finch with alive!Nathan

Our friending meme host st_aurafina writes hypercompetent characters brilliantly. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters is the Sentinel/Guide AU we deserve, and, in addition to plot, is peppered with super sweet kisses.

My newest fave is ArgylePirateWD. So hard to choose just one here. Oh what the hell. I don't know if you like mpreg (I do), but the comments are full of people saying 'I don't like mpreg EXCEPT THIS ONE', so. Two Dead Men and A(nother) Baby

A couple of shorter things since my other recs have been quite long
Home is (wherever I’m with you) by MFLuder (“Christ, Harold, we have a dog.”)
Candid by inmyriadbits, Spatz (John sends Harold pictures of things he finds beautiful)
Motivations by JenNova (“What made you choose the apartment?”)

Feel free to ask if there's something more specific you'd like to read / are looking for ♥

OMG, what a treasure trove you've brought me! 😍😍😍 I've liked other stuff by Astolat so I'm sure I'll like that one! (ngl the first time I watched PoI and got to the episode with the baby I was like.....am I Seeing Things Or Is This Really Happening and when I rewatched it I was like HAHA NOPE I WAS NOT IMAGINING THINGS. also. they have a DOG. came for the surveillance plot, stayed for the married couple.) I'm ambivalent about mpreg (have written it in the past though idk if any of my mpreg fics are online anymore, but I haven't actively sought it out in years) but that one looks great! 👀

Thanks so much, I'm going to dive in when I get the chance 😊😊😊

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Writing, videogames, linguistics. I hop wildly from fandom to fandom (usually game or television fandoms), but I come back to Final Fantasy a lot. Life Is Strange 2 is currently occupying my heart. Upcoming things I'm likely to end up talking about: Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Last of Us Part II, Bravely Default II.
If you've seen me around, it's probably because: I've written a lot of fanfiction over the years.

Anything else you need to know about me: I like writing about friendship and suffering, and an embarrassing number of my fics are thinly veiled excuses to make characters hug. I'm very ship-and-let-ship. I can't stay in the same fandom for two seconds.

Active/primary interests or fandoms: I participate in a few fannish exchanges throughout the year (usually some combination of Yuletide, Purimgifts, Everywoman, and FemslashEx), but beyond that I don't really read or write fanfic these days. I'm more of a "talk about canon" person--mostly science fiction and fantasy books, occasionally a movie or television show. Meta is my jam. I'm also an enthusiastic live theater fan, particularly the immersive/interactive genre. Non-media interests include urban planning, hiking, accessibility, board game design, and history.
If you've seen me around, it's probably because: It's been a while, but fandoms I've been active with in the past include X-men movieverse (original flavor), A:TLA, and The Eagle. And I rubberneck on [community profile] agonyaunt periodically.
I post about: Where I go and what I do. Posts this month have talked about fencing (the sport, not the property border kind), work, The Prisoner (TV), neoclassical sculpture, Terraforming Mars (game), Yuletide, The Woman in Black (play), modern art, eldercare, Michael Pearce's mysteries, urban planning, Meddling Kids (book), and The Midas Flesh (graphic novel). I generally do What I'm Reading Wednesdays at least a couple times a month.
I post/check my feed: I post once or twice a week and check my feed multiple times a day.
I want to find people that post about: I love reading other people's book reviews, whether it's books I've read, books I might someday read, or books of a genre I have no personal interest in but that the person writing about clearly loves. Same for theater reviews, especially if it gives me a window into a production that geography means I'll never see. I like glimpses into Lives I Don't Live in general: post about your job, your family, your weird hobby of building sculptures out of twigs and chewing gum? I'll read it all.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW or Goodreads. I find the rhythm of Discord servers hard to get into, but I'm happy to use it as an instant messaging platform for people I also interact with elsewhere (moment of silence for AIM, here).
My blog is: Almost entirely friends only.
Anything else you need to know about me: I'm poly, though the boring kind where I've been dating the same people forever and no one has any angst about it. I live alone except for my cats. I'm Jewish (December is not my favorite month). I'm an older millennial of the "grew up playing Oregon Trail" variety. I live in the US, but not in a state. Sometimes I post photos.

It sounds as if our approaches to DW are fairly similar: mine is a blend of RL stuff and reflections on media read/watched recently. I have a reviews blog which I need to get back to using more (and just writing longer-form book reviews in general). Would you be interested in adding each other?

Oh, I love the selection of exchanges you interact with! And the kinds of books you're into seem to match my interests too. :) I need to read more books instead of just reading fanfic all day; I miss talking about them with people!

Board game design sounds fascinating -- do you make your own games, or just like learning about the way games are designed in general?

I need to catch up on the Short Treks at some point, but I suspect that'll be something for the holiday break.

I'm curious about how the new Picard show will go too -- even if I didn't really watch TNG (besides being shown like... most episodes about Data or Q by college friends who were into those characters), Picard is a cool character and I love Patrick Stewart as an actor.

I also adore puppet wuxia like Thunderbolt Fantasy and Pili! In terms of other interests: writing, kpop, yoga, gardening, stationery (like planners and bullet journaling), podcasts, and divination cards.

Anything else you need to know about me: I love female characters, especially moms and stories featuring community building and strong platonic relationships. I currently have very low ability to consume any kind of grim story and am having to skip a bunch of well regarded works. On the other hand I've recently been doing more and more transformative fandom after hanging out on the edges of some of those communities for year and reading fic has been lovely in these dark times.

I have a kid who I sometimes mention in my posts. I'm a secular Jew, who enjoys ritual. I love feeding people and frequently wish that I could make all my friends a cup of tea via the internet.

I post/check my feed: multiple times a day
I want to find people that post about: Fandom in general, baking/cooking, The Good Place, the Batfamily (including Steph and Cass!), Star Wars (all eras!), the Expanse (tv & books)
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW; I am on Tumblr and do speak to a number of people there regularly, but I can't be on it at work, while I can be on DW (for now, anyway)
My blog is: 95% public, with occasional locked posts about work or family; I mostly give access to everyone who subscribes, though I don't always subscribe back.
Anything else you need to know about me: I'm 49 years old and have been in online fandom since Usenet in 1997, so I'm also Fandom Old and I'm very tired. I'm a big shipper of many things, but my OTP of OTP pairings are Steve/Bucky, Sirius/Remus, Han/Leia, Tim/Kon, Max/Alec, Danny/Rusty, Kaz/Inej, Luke/Lorelai, Coach/Mrs Coach - I write and read in a larger variety of fandoms, and I have a preference for bantery friends-to-lovers pairings.

I’m older! I entered the fandom later than you, though – in 2003. I wrote gen and slash, mainly about Remus and Sirius, and I remember enjoying and admiring your fic. And now I’m back, still only in HP, but I really hope we could be friends. My own post is on the second page.

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Predominantly The Strange Case of Starship Iris and Critical Role. Other fandoms that have hit me with feelings this year include Steven Universe, Juno Steel, Homestuck.

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: The ridiculous amounts of Starship Iris fic I post on AO3 and Tumblr. Or my occasional comments in [community profile] podcastjoy

I post about: Mostly fandom, sometimes real life. I post about books I've read, other media I've consumed, random articles I've seen on the internet, and fanwork recs.
I post/check my feed: I check daily, and I try to post weekly

I want to find people that post about: My specific fandoms would be great of course, but I'm always interested in book reviews, recs of all kind, interesting links, fandom meta
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW or Tumblr is cool.
My blog is: 100% public

Anything else you need to know about me:

I'm more generally here for found family and f/f feels, though I read a decent chunk of m/m. My writing and reading tastes are fairly tame in the grand scheme of things, but I'm very much not here for purity cultury/anti nonsense. I'm a software engineer, an atheist who was raised Hindu (so many other religious references go over my head), and a nerd who likes podcasts and history. I've been trying to write more this past year. I've mostly succeeded with that.

Found family and f/f is also very much my jam. :)

I may be biased, but yes, Starship Iris is a great podcast and, in fact, heavily features found family and f/f :D

[personal profile] shadaras 2019-12-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Mhmm! I've been aware of it for ages but my record with actually listening to podcasts is spotty :) It's one of the ones with transcripts, though, right? Those are much easier for me to consume.
jaggedwolf: (Default)

[personal profile] jaggedwolf 2019-12-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there are transcripts here. I get what you mean, being able to check when you don't catch a sentence or two is always nice.

[personal profile] shadaras 2019-12-22 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, nice!

Honestly, for me it's that sometimes with scripted things I just completely tune out of what's being said. I might be completely into the idea of the story but if the conversation doesn't feel real I just... lose track of it. Completely. My brain goes 'wow not enough stimulation there' and I start reading things on the internet or otherwise not focusing on the story, which is a shame when I know that Starship Iris is exactly my jam as far as a story goes.

The Palpatine fucks article was so funny haha. And yeah, I read Homestuck for the first time in like...two months this year? So now I'm just rolling around in art and fic before I subject myself to the Epilogues.

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Currently my main fandom is Doctor Who (mainly Peter Capaldi era), and my other main fandoms are X-Files, Buffyverse, The Mentalist, and Babylon 5. My other two great loves, even though I'm not 'in the fandom' for them, are Queen (the band) and Discworld
If you've seen me around, it's probably because: I'm old? :D I've been on DW/LJ, complaining about footwear on fictional female characters for over 15 years now, and in online fandom in general even longer. There isn't really a fannish activity that I haven't done at some point.
I post about: Whatever I happen to be watching on TV that moment, or whichever of my old fandoms I happen to be rewatching.
I post/check my feed: I check my feed at least once a week, post a bit less often
I want to find people that post about: Anything really? I'm interested in anything but sports :) But naturally it would be great to read more about my main fandoms, or other things I'm interested in like British panel shows, scifi, horror and stuff like that.
I am most interested in interacting with people on: DW, although comnets on AO3 are of course also always welcome :)
My blog is: public, except for the rare RL-related post
Anything else you need to know about me: I'm in my late 30's, very left-leaning (and green) politically.

Fannishly, I'm not a very shipping-focused person and tend to have favourite characters who I ship with everyone rather than favourite ships. These days, I'm also pretty much only watching media with female protagonists, because I filled my lifetime quota of favourite male characters already a few years ago.

Active/primary interests or fandoms: Reading in Glee and Harry Potter; writing in MCU and Glee, currently watching Prodigal Son (behind, so no spoilers!) and have The Untamed queued up since everyone I know is squeeing about it.

If you've seen me around, it's probably because: You were in Popslash or Bandom back in the day.

I post about: Nowadays it is mostly real life (work, school, family issues), but also some fic recs and music links occasionally. I go to the theater a lot.

I post/check my feed: I post at least a couple times a week and read my flist daily and try to comment often depending on work schedule and RL.

I want to find people that post about: I appreciate older fans like myself (I just turned 50) and our life challenges, but also if you are a Glee Seblaine fan or a MCU Hawkeye fan, I'm your woman. I love getting to know my flist, so if you post about personal stuff I am definitely interested and will likely comment.
