We watched Cocaine Blues, the pilot episode for the Phryne Fisher murder mysteries. It was heaps fun! SO. MANY. WOMEN. So infinitely femslashable. Hot lady doctor in trousers! Surprise Miranda Otto! Miriam Margolyes! (Not in trousers, but still amazing!) And was that Rippon Lea that I saw? There's, like, two posh houses we see on Melbourne TV, one is Rippon Lea, and one is Werribee Mansion. Which is a shame, because there's lots of really pretty houses out there - Como House is gorgeous - but maybe it's easier to use those two? Anyway, it's going to be so much fun spotting Melbourne settings.
It's also super pretty.
Phryne Fisher, private eye:

[Phryne Fisher in twenties flapper gear, lying on a bed with a small gold revolver in her hand.]
She's best friends with Doctor MacMillan:

[Phryne in a blue drop-waist dress, arm in arm with Mac, a woman who is wearing tweed and a brown derby.]
They hug a lot:

[Phryne looking over Mac's shoulder as they hug.]
Miriam Margolyes makes everything good.

[Aunt Prudence, played by Miriam Margolyes, wearing a lavender hat and a grey fur stole, looking sceptical]
Surprise Miranda Otto hugging!

[Phryne hugging Lydia, played by Miranda Otto]
Doctor Mac is super hot.

[Mac sitting cross-legged on a white sofa, in a tweed waistcoat looking very dapper.]
My profession! So shady!

[View through a window, where a shady deal between a man in a suit and a man in a white coat is going on. Text: Shady pharmacist, lol.]
Phryne's maid, Dot. She is incredibly brave, extremely honorable, can mend stockings beautifully and has theories on the evil of electricity:

[Dot, a ladies' maid, sitting on a sofa in her uniform. Text: "Sooner or later it will come into contact with the molten core of the earth and will blow up the whole world!"]
One more of Phryne because the costumes are so gorg:

If you're interested in watching a clever period murder mystery with lots and lots of ladies, pm me or
lilacsigil, we can hook you up with a source. Here's the ABC's official site: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
Speaking of female private eyes, it's all over the interwebs Lucy Liu has been cast as Watson in the US version of BBC's Sherlock. I think it could be good or bad depending on the writing, but it's the writing I have no particular hopes for. One good thing about all the debate is that I am thinking a lot about how wonderful it would have been if they'd cast Lucy Liu as Holmes. THAT WOULD BE INCREDIBLE. I WOULD WATCH THAT FOREVER AND EVER AMEN.
Um.
lilacsigil has a scan next week. Nothing is wrong, it's routine follow up to 2011's medical adventures but we're super stressed about it, in that flash-back panicky way. Just wanted to say that it's happening, and we're okay.
It's also super pretty.

Date: 2012-02-29 02:16 pm (UTC)My impressions, based on your post:
- Phryne is very well-cast (her hair is perfect!) but I wish they'd given her bright green contacts.
- DOT HAS A BOB? SCANDALOUS! In the books she has a long plait down her back and refuses to cut it no matter how hot she gets, because she's a good, respectable Catholic girl.
- Also, Dot in the books is a little scared of the phone at first, but generally a very practical, down-to-earth person. I cannot imagine her having conspiracy theories about electricity, and I suspect a bit of classism on behalf of the writers.
- I don't remember Phryne and Dr Macmillan being best friends - Dot is Phryne's best friend. Also, Dot doesn't wear a maid uniform in the books, she just dresses conservatively, because she isn't actually a maid as such, she's Phryne's paid companion.
- in case you can't tell, Dot is my favourite character (along with Jane.) She's just this ordinary girl who gets swept up into Phryne's world and has to adjust her ideas on everything, and does so with aplomb. Did the episode have how Dot and Phryne met? With her taking the knife away from Dot to stop her murdering her former employer's son?
- I do hope the publishers don't start using cover art from the TV series instead of the current cover art. The current cover art for the series is totally gorgeous.

Date: 2012-03-01 02:42 am (UTC)Dot is lovely! No, she's not being a conspiracy theorist - she's earnestly explaining what she's been told by her priest. I LOVE DOT TOO! I haven't read the books, but I can see she's going to be an important part of the stories.

Really? I hope that's something they develop in the series, then, because those two actors had awesome, awesome chemistry.
I do hope the publishers don't start using cover art from the TV series instead of the current cover art.
No luck there, I'm sorry to say - we went looking for the books, and there's a new release with images from the miniseries as cover art.
Astonishingly relevant to my interests.
Date: 2012-02-29 03:20 pm (UTC)I can't get Australian tv, so I didn't click the cut tag, I just wanted to pass on crossed fingers for L's medical tests (because they are stressful, even when all is well and they are just for monitoring) but got completely distracted. Wow.

Date: 2012-03-01 05:08 am (UTC)Thanks for the good wishes and the understanding. (I'm having trouble explaining why this is stressful to IRL family, so it's nice to have my fandom peeps who totally get it.)

I too was sad about the Lucy Liu casting when I realised how great she would be as Sherlock Holmes, but I will take Watson as a consolation prize. I am sure she will rock Watson like no man has done before. Lucy Liu \o/
Good thoughts and vibes for you and

Date: 2012-02-29 06:52 pm (UTC)Lucy Liu! I am partly confused because I was pretty sure her acting was terrible, but apparently she's improved and is now badass. So yay!

Date: 2012-03-02 05:41 am (UTC)I like Lucy Liu! I think the roles she gets have sometimes been a bit dodgy, but I like her. So, who knows? I think the writing will suck balls, sadly, but I'll probably watch just to see her. I'm a sucker.

Date: 2012-02-29 08:47 pm (UTC)I really like the idea of Lucy Liu as Watson. I would have liked it even more if Holmes had also been a woman, but it's still pretty awesome.
Sending hugs and happy vibes regarding that scan!

Date: 2012-03-01 12:28 am (UTC)I really can't do anything more than laugh at fandom's reaction. My ideal adaptation of Sherlock Holmes would have both Sherlock and Watson as women, but that will never happen on network television.
And I'm sending lots of hugs to you and

Date: 2012-03-01 11:04 am (UTC)ObGunNut: hard to see in the pic, but I think the lead is toting a slightly anachronistic firearm -- looks like a 1930s-era Colt Detective Special rather than the earlier version (they debuted in 1927 or thereabouts). Difference is the rounded butt and the shrouded ejector rod. Will have to take a look at what guns they use over the course of the show...

Date: 2012-03-02 09:53 am (UTC)ZOMG that is essie davies? never in a million years would i have picked her. she totally owns that look. last i saw she was blond and a little bit mean in south solitary (which not coincidentally also starred MO!). here she looks like someone else entirely.
and i cannot believe tammy mcintosh. she was just a baby in police rescue and now this!
now there are two shows on the abc i have to watch. plus they're showing the bbc's new great expectations starting sunday, which stars gillian anderson as miss havisham, so i have to watch it as well, natch. aunty owns my soul, it seems.
many good thoughts are flowing your and

I saw her in the preview! SHE LOOKED AMAZING! And by amazing, I mean all scary and havisham-y, but so perfect.
It's so nice to be watching Aussie TV again - it feels like forever since there's been something that I wanted to watch.
