st_aurafina: (Yuletide: panic!)
Welp, I have lived long enough to have reached my twelfth Yuletide. I am surprised and pleased at this outcome, especially after the way that 2017 rolled in for the whole world.

Anyway. Yuletide is always fun for me, I've always loved my gifts, and I try to generally be chill about the process, so I hope I can make your assignment easy and enjoyable for you, too. My letters tend to be long – please don't worry! I am chatty, and excited that we share a fandom. I am all on board with optional details being optional: you go and ODAO if you have to. We have connected over our love for a fandom. I will love what you write.

I've put down ideas for each fandom – they are honestly just random things that have occurred to me as I write my letter, things that would be cool to read. I'm not particularly attached to any one idea (or fandom, for that matter), but wanted to throw out some prompts in case you're the kind of writer that likes prompts or wants to get an idea of how I view the fandom. If you find those prompts too constrictive, please fly free! I love the fandom, I love all the characters, I love the way that people are fannish about the characters. I am a fan of fandom, so show me how you love the characters we matched on, and I will be happy. I promise.

After eleven of these letters, I've got my likes and dislikes pinned down, so I've cut and pasted them from previous letters:
Likes and dislikes )

I've talked about the specific fandoms under the cut, with possible scenarios or prompts. I talk more about some than others, but please understand I have no favourite. It's just what has come to mind as I write the letter. I would be happy with fic for any of these fandoms.

There are important spoilers here for Westworld and The Good Place, so if you're browsing letters, please be careful!

Beautiful Losers II – Jack Vettriano, The Defenders, New Rules – Dua Lipa, Doctor Strange, Westworld, The Good Place )

Miscellanea
If we've matched on a large canon, and it's not going to work for you, I've got a few small and easily accessed canons here:
A painting: Beautiful Losers II, Jack Vettriano
A music video: New Rules – Dua Lipa.

For stalking purposes, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina and [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina. All my previous Dear Author letters are here: Dear Author. If you have any questions, you're welcome to message my partner, [personal profile] lilacsigil. She will keep your secret for life, or at least until after reveals.

Thank you so much for writing! I hope your Yuletide is fantastic.
st_aurafina: Sameen Shaw walking in a desert with a hat on (POI: Shaw hat)
Thursday's headlines about Trump and the military made for a fairly hellish day in the old brain weasel cage. I want to say that I love and support all my beautiful trans and genderqueer friends. Thanks to [community profile] nanodownunder and Camp NaNo, I've got a first draft of my [community profile] wipbigbang. It came in at 48K (of POI Sentinel/Guide AU) Now I need to squish out the word bloat, edit it, and, um, find an Ameripicker. (Any volunteers? It's Root/Shaw, Harold/John, and my basic plan was this: "There are sentinels and guides. They touch each other on the face gently. A lot.")

I've been writing and writing and writing, and I'm 3K away from my 25K Camp NaNo total, but I'm floundering because I finished my main project, and my back-up project. I guess I should write some more [community profile] 15kisses fics.

Also, I am trying to do nominations for [community profile] femslashex. Nom nom nom!!

Writing! It's haaaaard but somehow words keep coming out of my fingertips like silly string.

I know why they did it, and if I were a business using Insta to promote myself, the algorithm would be great. I could overloook the ads, but the lack of chronological feed is killing it for me. I like the posts of people I know, because I want to say "Hey, I like this!" but then that prioritises their posts over the stuff I just ogle for teh pretteh. And it's kinda creepy the way the thing is measuring the time I spend looking at stuff. Though I did find this article interesting, about the formation of insta-pods to game the algorithm:
Instagram influencers use comment collusion to game the algorithm.

My little sister gives me life - she asked me about the acceptance ring, which is put out by AirBnB in support of marriage equality in Australia. I said I thought it was a good idea (apart from AirBnB being a super sketchy company) but that the debate was starting to hurt me when it used to energise me.

Me: Honestly, I've kind of given up hope on it going through.
Her: Don't worry. I'll buy one and carry your hope for you.
Her: I'll buy a few and wear them on my fingers and toes
Her: And nipples.

I'm taking her up on it, though. The debate is ugly and unnecessary and so fucking stressful at this point that I just don't read about it anymore. But she will carry my hope. On her nipples. Lovely girl. Best sister.

The temperature got into the negatives last night. (Negative 2C is 24 F, for you Fahrenheit types.) That doesn't happen! Also, the oak tree finally dropped all its leaves, like, FOOMP! It always goes last, and I always wonder if it's actually going to happen, because I don't get deciduous trees. It's so weird to have bare, wintry looking branches in the middle of all this green.

We're in that bit of winter where it's too cold to sow anything or start seeds, and nothing that technically can grow through cold weather is actually growing very much. My baby lettuces are chugging along in the greenhouse but at a rate of millimetres/week which makes salads a long-distant prospect. I miss summer salads! I miss 'throw a whole cucumber on that' salads. I still eat winter cucumbers, but they're nothing like summer.

Not that I miss the heat. Not one bit. Neither do the cats. They are so very loving right now. It's definitely our strong family bond and nothing to do with draining our body heat.

Now I have to decide if I want floral dinosaur, a sailing ship one, or one of the Escher-esque ones made of stairs. So very lucky. Now we need to build him up and get him well, but he's doing a lot of that work himself, as cats do (MOSTLY BY JUMPING ON THE KITCHEN BENCH TO LOOK FOR HUMAN FOOD GRRR.) We think we found the site of the original bite - back right leg - because the skin got pink and raw there, but it's healing up. My concentration window has been appalling so I've barely read any Yuletide, beyond my wonderful gift fics, which has been sad-making because I love the process of reading and reccing and commenting. I'm hopeful that as the pred dose drops, my ability to get my eyes to stick to the screen will improve. I've got a doctor's appointment upcoming where we can review the rate of decrease and make some kind of long term plan. In the meantime, I'm average four-five hours of sleep a night, getting up at 5:30 with a weird unfocused mania that has me running around the house ~doing things and ~making plans. And crochet. Crochet is a life-saver at the moment. I still have knees, though right knee is making a whispered reappearance on the pain scale, possibly because I'm doing as much movement while I still can.

Dear SSR author,

This is exciting! Thank you for loving Agent Carter, and for creating a fanwork for me.

I love Agent Carter for the spy shenanigans, for Peggy and a whole bunch of awesome women, and for the part it takes in building the MCU. More Marvel world building is a good thing.

I am pretty easy-going when it comes to creative exchanges – I have always loved what has been created for me, and I think that this process of coming together to celebrate a show that we all love is amazing.

I've nominated mostly femslash or gen relationships, but when it comes down to it, I'm happy with gen, het or slash. I do prefer stories with queer presence, so if you prefer to write Peggy as straight, I'd love some of the other characters or OCs to be not-straight. I haven't nominated all characters, but I'm happy to see any of the cast appear in the story. I'm particularly fond of the push-and-pull friendship between Howard and Peggy, for example. And I love Rose, whom I suspect actually runs the LA SSR office. If you're the kind of person who likes to throw easter eggs into your fic and pull from other sources, I'm a Marvel comics fan, I'm up to date with Agents of SHIELD, and I've seen all the MCU movies except for Ant Man.

My requests are meant to be guidelines for the kind of story I like, and to provide inspiration. I'm not in anyway fixated on the specific of the prompts, so if your idea takes you in a different direction, please follow your heart.

"Ah, yes, Murray pride," Anne says, warming to the topic. "Also known as, your family is so ridiculously stubborn that whenever I think about them I thank God I'm an orphan."

"I'm an orphan, too," Emily points out.

"I thank God I'm adopted," Anne says.

Because Emily today would be a blogger. Of course she would. So many lovely details transfer across to modern times in this fic.

Degenerate Beauty Queens (1414 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Born to Die - Lana Del Rey (album)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: This is What Makes Us Girls (song)
Summary:

"Sweet sixteen and we had arrived."

The song that the fic is based on is really pretty indulgent, which I like, to be honest, because isn't that what adolescence is all about? This fic fleshes the story out, but catches that dreamy, close feeling perfectly.

The Ultimate Cash Crop (1531 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Nextwave (Comic)
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Elsa Bloodstone, Monica Rambeau, The Captain, Aaron Stack, Tabitha Smith
Summary:

In which pointsettias are surprisingly similar to broccoli.

I read most of Nextwave with an expression of O.O and little birdies tweeting in circles around my head. This fic produces a similar effect. Which is good, I think? Yeah, good. Read it, fleshy ones.

st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
Dear Yule-person,

Hello and welcome to my letter! I love Yuletide and I love you! But not in a creepy way, unless you signed up for Candle Cove, in which case, yeah, totally creepy and IT WAS YOUR REFLECTION ALL ALONG, thud drip drip drip.

Ahem.

My primary focus at Yuletide is that everyone has a good time. I ask you to respect my squicks listed below, but apart from that, all information in this letter is gravy – feel free to push it to the side of your plate if it's not to your liking.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not the no powers barista kind), crossovers, teamwork.

Plot! Big sweeping plot, small canon-compliant plot, things for the characters to do while they're snarking at each other, things going on around them while they're getting it on. I like stuff to happen.

Competence! I have a huge competence kink. I love seeing people being really, really good at stuff. I love lateral thinkers and characters who follow their instincts and people putting their skills to use in unexpected ways.

Ladies! BAMF female characters who don't have to bring other female characters down to be BAMFs. Mothers and sisters and girlfriends and girlfriends and wives. Women with agency. Women treated with respect.

Things that I don't like as much (but can handle if the story takes you there):
Sad endings, character death, angst, embarrassment.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Miscellanea:
Two of my requests are for fandoms that are very short and easily absorbed – there's a movie, and a short story. So, if we've matched on Miss Fisher or Captive Prince and you're having second thoughts, try Candle Cove or Bram Stoker's Dracula.

There are more Dear Author letters at my Dear Author tag, on Livejournal or Dreamwidth. I'm at [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina, if you're wanting to check out my fandoms or my fic.

I've talked more about some of these fandoms than others, but that’s not an indicator of preference – I'd be equally thrilled by a story from any of my four fandoms.

Onto specific fandom requests!

Candle Cove, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Captive Prince, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries )

Thank you so much for signing up! I love Yuletide, it's the absolute best thing about the holiday season. I hope you enjoy writing for me. I'm going to enjoy reading.
st_aurafina: Kate Freelander, looking over her shoulder (Sanctuary: Kate looking back)
Hi [community profile] femslash12 author! I love this exchange! I hope it's fun for you, too.

This is a letter with optional details - I want to expand on my prompts, but if that's more information than you need, feel free to skim over.

What do I like? Lots of stuff! I love me some happy endings. I love plotty stories, I love porn with plot, I love friendship fic, and women having each other's backs. I like relationships, first kisses, friends with benefits, frenemies - I'm good with any kinds of relationships where both parties are equal. Crossover are LOVE. There's a list of my fandoms on my profile: faviconst_aurafina. Crossover at will - any of my requested fandoms, any time.

Not so much a fan of (as in, if the story calls for it, I can go there, but I tend to be wary of): angst, sad stories, jokes at a character's expense.

Definitely not a fan of (as in, please don't write if you can possibly avoid it): Incest, cross-gen, teacher/student, employer/employee.

I have a dear_author tag, if you'd like to read letters from past exchanges. You'll find them here on Dreamwidth or here on LJ.

My requests were a little light on the detail, so I've got some more information here if you'd like it.

Everything under here 100% optional! )

st_aurafina: Natasha Romanova, looking down, against a rainbow background (Marvel: Natasha)
We watched the first part of the pilot episode for SGA tonight, and something clicked. I think, maybe this time, I'll be able to get into it? Like, finally. Still, it's weird to know all the characters from porn I've read. I'm prepared to recognise half the cast from Sanctuary - hey, Carson Beckett is Terrence Wexford! I'm not sure if he's prettier with or without a frill neck.

I have new glasses, new orthotics, a new software system at work (that one was hard work), and I'm going to two different aqua-aerobics classes a week now. I think I'm starting to level out, mental health wise, which is nice. I have an appointment with a new psychologist at the end of May. I feel like some kind of self-improvement project. The night before last, I had this amazing dream, where I sat by a fireplace and chatted with Sue Perkins, which doesn't sound like much, but it was really relaxed, and not at all like my dreams of late. But you know, any time Sue Perkins wants to drop by my dream for more than a chat, I have no complaints.

The Rarewomen archive is open, here. I wrote two fics:

Human Behaviour (G, Doctor Who, the TARDIS and Idris, with cameos by Ace, Leela, Tegan and Nyssa, and the Seventh and the Eleventh Doctor.)

and Happy New Year, (G, Doctor Who, Jo Grant and Mickey Smith)

(I'll probably post them to my journal tomorrow, for completeness, so apologies in advance for the spamination.)
