- X-Files friending meme
(Hi to the new peeps!)

- [community profile] femslashex is open for sign-ups!

That what have you been up to meme:

So what have you been up to?
Um, work, random medical stuff that seems to take an age but never really gets done. I still have a cold. This is the cold that never ends, it goes on and on and on, my friends. It's not even that bad, it's just that every time I think I've kicked it, something stressful happens and it stops in the doorway, turns around, and gets comfy again.

Major life changes? Same old same old?
My grandfather passed away last week. It was sort of expected - he was 94, he had dementia and was quite frail - but it was also kind of a shock. I am weirdly sad, though I wouldn't say we were close, and I'd definitely say we had some conflicts. I don't know, mortality and all that, I guess, and I was sad for my dad who has cared for him. And nobody wants to see their tiny Nonna crying broken heartedly at the door of the hearse. (But she told me she was glad that Dad got him a really fancy coffin with brass bits and so on. I'm glad that made her happy.)

It was deeply weird to be around family members from whom I am estranged. Need to unpack that later with the therapist. But I got to meet my little sister's boyfriend, which was nice. He's from a very conservative background which has been a source of conflict between them - I think we were the first gay people he's ever met - but I think it was really gutsy of him to go to the funeral, and if he's willing to do that to support Nat, then I'm giving him some Brownie points.

What fandom are you in/do you spend most of your time in?
- MCU fandom, still working on the Captain America fic. Currently embedded with Howard in WWII.

- Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, smashing out my [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang. I thought I'd missed the deadline but because I'm doing my own art, I get more time, which is supposed to be for actually doing the art, but I'm still finishing the writing, oops. Currently hanging with Peggy Carter in 1946.

- GREAT BRITISH BAKE-OFF omg, but mostly on Tumblr. I love Bake-Off time, yay!

- Sense8 - I've finished, and I really want to write some fic. But I have to Mavel Bang first. And omg, NaNo is looming.

Where do you hang out online?
[personal profile] st_aurafina

[archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina.
Oh, and [pinterest.com profile] dansnark, if you want to see a million pins of art journals and crochet scarfs.

What are you reading?
I am having such a crappy time reading right now. My concentration has been busted for months. I read fic, and I'm having iddish fun reading through [livejournal.com profile] ckingsbridge's novels. She's got the kink and the cuddling, it's all beautiful.

What are you watching?
Hannibal, for the last time. My non-spoilery finale reaction: Omg, Hannibal, you're the worst. No, Hannibal, stop! Stop! What am I watching? Is this fic? THIS IS FIC, ISN'T IT? THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN FIC!!

Killjoys:
This show is awesome and almost everything I wanted Firefly to be. Four episodes in, still think it needs moar actual queer. But otherwise so far, I love it. Love Dutch, love her team, love the brotherly relationship, love the zingy UST, love the world building. Love the ship.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Because we've got access to it via Stan, and the ridiculous luxury of being able to dial up any episode any time is heady. I'm mostly cherry-picking favourite episodes. We just watched Time's Arrow, and I love Guinan.

What are you making?
I'm still crocheting the epic blanket, but I keep taking detours to make other small projects. I'm working up an infinity scarf for me. FOR ME. (I mostly give everything I make away.)

What are you squeeing about today?
Hannibal, but it's a slightly nervous, somewhat confused squee. That scene from the credits, wtf, we will be debating that for years.

If you could rope old fandom friends into a new fandom, it would be...
I don't rope people into things! But there's a lot of new stuff out there. Hey, is anyone watching X Company? It has some damn pretty people, but I don't normally do real life war fandoms. (Only, you know, Winter Soldier, and that one amazing episode of Sanctuary.) Is it really sad? Or just regular sad?

I should really watch/read/dive into _______ and then come talk to you about it!
Come and tell me about anything! I'm nearly all caught up on TV now, I'm going to need more stuff.
st_aurafina: Sam Wilson in his Falcon suit (Marvel: Falcon)

Me: Dead trees do.)

Cheerful things:

1. GREAT BRITISH BAKE-OFF IS BACK

[Mary Berry's elation at the mention of gin.]

My life is made whole again. And wow, 9 million viewers for the first episode, yay.

2. Captain America NaNo rewrite is in the middle of a Howard POV bit, a WWII flashback. I really like this fic. I like writing it, and I like editing it, and I need to hurry up so I can get to my favourite bits. And I need to get it posted before it gets jossed by a third MCU movie. (This fic has JARVIS in it, and old Agents of SHIELD before shit went down, and apparently there's a scene with 80's Peggy Carter in Ant Man and she doesn't have the steel bob I imagined her with in this fic so i probably need to check this out.)

3. [etsy.com profile] weelittlestitches put out an X-Files pattern.

[Mulder and Scully, cross-stitched figures. Text says 'The truth is out there']

4. Whale season! At our local beach, we've had Southern Right whales, porpoises, dolphins, and seals. And a pod of orca - I didn't know we even had orca down here. There's seals lazing outside the surf lifesaving club right now.

Further afield, back in July there was a Migaloo sighting: Rare white humpback whale spotted in Cook Strait

5. Spoilers for Agent Carter )

6. Hats for dogs! Hats with ear holes for dogs! By [ravelry.com profile] jessie-plaskett.

7. This terri-bad movie is finally coming out:

It was shot in Warrnambool, and it mostly seems to be fart jokes and it looks so amazingly cliched and bad. But Warrnambool is all WE'RE IN A MOVIE COME TOURISTS COME LEAVE YOUR LOVELY TOURIST DOLLARS HERE! I don't know. There are Maremma dogs guarding the penguins, that's true. I'm just all cringe-amazed by the trailer. It's so Strayan. Onya, mate.
st_aurafina: Rainy day, person with a rainbow umbrella in the distance (Rainbow umbrella)
July was sucky, in a broad spectrum way, spanning from cat sick on the doona to an emergency hospital visit. I seem to be consistently making and sending sympathy cards, too, which can stop any time now.

I need to take said doona to the dry cleaners but life keeps getting in the way, and it just sits there, all crumpled up and judging me. I think I am that doona. I am that sad, suspiciously stained, sunken-in-the-middle doona that nobody will help.

*massive le sigh*

On the other hand, I just found a note to myself in email drafts about a fic plot point that I had completely forgotten, and it fixes a problem very neatly. Clever past!me.

Ooh, and clearly I meant to put this in a post and then lost it in the morass of drafts:
AWESOME CUSTOMER REPORT:
Customer: I'd like these scripts filled, please. *is a dear little old lady in her eighties, wearing a black cardigan*
Me: Sure! That will be about ten minutes.
Customer: *turns to browse giftware. Her black cardigan has ELVIS' FACE KNITTED INTO THE BACK.*
Me: ELVIS!
Customer: *gives me a sly little wink*

Later, when she is collecting her scripts:
Me: And now you can take Elvis up to the counter.
Customer: And then Elvis will leave the building.

My customers. Seriously. Love 'em.

I must go through these email drafts more often - there are treasures in here.

Series: Part 4 of boy with a scar
Summary:

What if, when Petunia Dursley found a little boy on her front doorstep, she took him in? Not into the cupboard under the stairs, not into a twisted childhood of tarnished worth and neglect—what if she took him in?

Petunia was jealous, selfish and vicious. We will not pretend she wasn’t. She looked at that boy on her doorstep and thought about her Dudders, barely a month older than this boy. She looked at his eyes and her stomach turned over and over. (Severus Snape saved Harry’s life for his eyes. Let’s have Petunia save it despite them).

Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes—she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.

I love all of these AUs, but this one is my favourite by far. Amazing Petunia, still very much herself, but with all that ferocity tapped and sent in a more positive direction. (And thanks, [personal profile] dine for the rec!)

Tentative yay: I started writing again. It's mostly due to the neighbour dude, who is a great neighbour except for those random days when he gets out the chainsaw. (Not in a massacre-y way, just in a endless drone-y way.) So I put on my headphones and opened a file and wrote, and somehow chainsaw neighbour dude helped me over that initial hump of fear. But not in a massacre-y way. I finished the rewrite on Chapter One of the Winter Soldier NaNo project, yay. Thanks, chainsaw neighbour dude.

A question: Where does Sam live? Are there any clues in the movie? Pic to illustrate, if that is helpful.

Here, look at Nomi and Amanita. From Sense8. Precious babies. I love them so much.

[Tall blonde woman holding hands with a black woman who has brightly coloured braids in her hair, standing against a wall of graffiti.]

I just watched Ep 4. (The one with the Four Non-Blondes bit, for people who have already finished watching.) Ugh, I never knew how much I wanted an 8-way mindmeld. At the same time, eight characters is a lot to work with. (This is me thinking ahead to when I will inevitably want to write a Sense8 AU with another fandom. Eight characters? Wow. But so interesting.) I need to know more.

I was listening to Kate Bush's 'Cloudbusting' the other day, and realised that I've been listening to this song for nearly thirty years and never actually looked up what the heck it was about. (It's a good forward-moving song, so I put it on a lot of my writing playlists. And also my housework playlist.) Turns out it's about a lot of stuff. A LOT OF STUFF. Like, wow. Mad science and oppressive governments and orgasmic (I think?) energy and actual cloud seeding.

The video was directed by Terry Gilliam and it stars Donald Sutherland standing on a hill, and Kate Bush standing well below him in a pixie wig. I should google more lyrics from the eighties.

I put the video here behind the cut: )

Blurg, I have a cold, and I feel like I have a hairball at the back of my throat. I am displeased. I have been consuming copious amounts of tea with lemon. I bought lemons specifically, which makes me wonder how the lemon tree we planted at the old house is going. (We moved last September, for the new people.) It should be getting fruit, and so should the lime tree - ah, well.

[personal profile] lilacsigil planted another tree here at the new house but it will be a few years before we get anything. We've got bok-choy and baby broccoli in the garden beds right now and I've got rocket and spinach seeds coming in the mail, because our mini-greenhouse is all up and ready for baby plants. This is great, because the greens at the greengrocer are dire at the moment. It's going to be a race between seedlings and scurvy at this rate. (Not really, not with all the lemons I just consumed.)

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang, even though I should be working on my Winter Soldier NaNo project so I can post it some time before the next movie comes out. It's already been horribly jossed by Agents of SHIELD's second season. (I'm tentatively looking for someone I can ask America questions, if there's anyone out there who'd be willing. Like, can you catch a bus from DC to New York if you're pretty sure that people are going to be monitoring airports and train stations? That sort of thing.)

Otherwise, we are both well, apart from sore throats and woolly heads. Hello again to the new people - I'm very glad to be getting to know you.

Wednesday has become cooking day - we make lunches, cook dinner for a few days ahead. Today, in an epic cook fest, we roasted a huge piece of beef, fried up some more zucchini for putting in pasta and salad over the next few days, and toasted a batch of almonds.

Also made Brioche, though to be fair, I started that last night. I'm hoping for nice leftovers to use for French toast over the Easter weekend.

And Chocolate zucchini cake. This made a ginormous bundt cake. Like, it's huuuuge. It's a huge bundt. I love saying 'bundt'.

Hot cross buns this weekend! I'll start the dough tomorrow night. Must put the fruit on to soak tonight.

Easter is coming. Work is going to suck, but then it will be done, and I can make hot cross buns and eat an Easter egg.
st_aurafina: The Winter Soldier wearing a mask and showing his metal arm (Marvel: Winter Soldier)
In my Yuletide fic, Laurent was the one with the tiny pinhole where the feels come from. (Per my drunk post.)

I was just cruising through tumblr, and hugging myself, and telling [personal profile] lilacsigil (for the millionth time) that winter soldier!Bucky looks like he has no feels, but is in fact all full of feels. (This I do with my head inside my stripey jumper so I can pretend I am Natasha in her stripey hoodie.)

She said "But no tiny pinhole where the feels come from."

THIS IS EVERYTHING I WANT IN WINTER SOLDIER FIC. Omg she is so smart!

(And she is also my knight in shining armour, for reasons I can't tell, but just know that she is.)

I have only managed one fic for [community profile] fandom_stocking, and this makes me sad. I'm just so tired and depleted after the visitors (and my mum managed to freak me out, even though I'm shunned, even though we did not talk at all over Christmas. It seems unfair.) It's taking so long to recover. But I will recover. There is cuddling and cats and leftover icecream concoction that we made for the wee nephews. It's plain vanilla, with chopped up chocolate bars in it. It was a massive hit with pre-teen boys! And tired fangirls.

I go to bed now, because tomorrow is another day. And I will feel better.
st_aurafina: The Winter Soldier wearing a mask and showing his metal arm (Marvel: Winter Soldier)
Today was the first real scorcher of summer: 41 degrees C and an extreme fire risk. There was a nasty, scary fire in the north of the state, and a closer but smaller and better controlled one at Framlingham, but they're both coming under control as the evening rolls in. Our visitors went home yesterday, which was a wise choice. I wouldn't want to be on the roads today through the Otways, with the fire risk this high.

I don't really know how the new house behaves in the heat, but so far, with the shades down and the lights off, it seems to be holding at a nice temperature. The ceiling fans really help, too.

Fic for 2014:

I didn't write as much as I wanted to, but I did post two big bangs, both of which I'm really proud of.

64K words, but only 8 fics )

WIPs:

I've got 50K of Winter Soldier fic just waiting to be jossed by Agent Carter in a week or so. *le sigh* It's worth it for more Peggy canon.

OMG, I just found a file in my WIP folder, entitled "Warehouse 13 a/b/o plan". Um.

I honestly cannot remember this chat happening so I'm really glad I c&p'd it into a doc: )

This closet is full of awesome crap!! This was for... something Warehousey:

snippet: Five Times the Warehouse Called on the Sanctuary )

There's 3K of this, with pirates. Later, Helena murders someone with a vole.

TV and Movies:

Winter Soldier! Oh, man, I mean, I'd read the comics, and I liked the story, but the movie punched me in the feels big time.

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Surprisingly did not get fannish about this. I mean, I liked it. I loved it. But I did not write for it.

Person of Interest: We have inhaled two seasons, and are launching into the third. Love it! It took me a while to get into, and I still find Mr Reese deeply odd. I haven't investigated the fic department of this fandom, but do people write him as, like, the embodiment of the Machine? I find him easier to deal with if I can tell myself that somehow Finch built a walking, talking, empathy-impaired android. (Now I'm ear-wormed with a creepy Cliff Richard song.) Although we've just had the episode where Root identifies the Machine as female. But anyway, I strongly suspect I'm going to be all about Shaw/Root. Also I love Carter. Also I know what happens.

- Battlestar Galactica: I mainlined this while we were moving. I had to do it alone, because it's hellishly handheld and vertigo inducing, plus [personal profile] lilacsigil doesn't do apocalyptic fandoms. (Although I'll argue it becomes less apocalyptic in later seasons, though not less handheld.) One of the benefits of watching a show long after it has finished is being able to google for the really bad episodes and skip over them.

Oh, my love for the ladies of this show. Oh, my incredible crush on Katee Sackhoff's shoulders.

- Longmire: I'm midway through season 2. I started this for Katee Sackhoff (omg, she needs to be in it more, what a waste!) but I'm staying for Lou Diamond Philips. I did not honestly expect to enjoy it as much as I am. But it needs more ladies, lots more ladies. I can ship Walt/Henry with no difficulty, but I really need some lady ships.

- Sleepy Hollow. I would not have picked you as my DNF show this year. Seriously, what a freaking disaster you turned into. I am so sad for your clever, media-savvy actors who know the ship is going down.

- Doctor Who, you lost me when Twelve told Clara she was fat. What the actual fuck was that. Not that I won't keep coming back - I am always going to come back, it's a lifelong thing.

Ugh, that finished up depressing. I will cheer myself up by looking to the future. I am looking forward to Agent Carter. So very much. Please don't suck, please don't be gross and weird. I have The Librarians ready to watch as soon as my schedule settles down a little. Person of Interest Season Three is fun so far. *hugs self gently* It's okay, bb.

Comics

I was so glad to come back to comics this year! Not that I think the stupidity and grossness of the industry has lessened, but my volcanic rage at the stupidity and grossness has simmered down enough that I can now enjoy the good things.

Ms Marvel! So adorable, and so full of ridiculousness and glorious heroism.

Hawkeye. So unexpectedly droll, so unexpectedly leading me into using a smush name for a ship. America wasn't even in it, and yet I am team Amerikate.

Young Avengers. For the Amerikate!!

Loki: Agent of Asgard. I'm only six issues in, but it's awesome. (I am apparently supposed to read Journey into Mystery, but I remember when [personal profile] lilacsigil read the last issue and something SO AWFUL happened that she walked around the house randomly bursting into tears. So I'm never going to read that, because I don't do sad endings.)

Thor! I'm only two issues in, but I love lady!Thor! Also Malekith is walking around with dude!Thor's arm wrapped around his neck like a stole, and it's hilarious and camp. I feel like he'd be great on Project Runway.

I also did a re-read of the Winter Soldier arc in Captain America, because of my many feels about the movie.

(A supervillain AU where Clint shoots arrows at people and gets beat up a lot. So, not really that much of an AU.)

This is the one that brought me back to comics, so I really have to nominate it as the best fic I read this year. It's why I had to read Young Avengers and Hawkeye. I think I'm going to go re-read it now.

I am a little bit ahead in NaNo, huzzah! This is thanks to Steve telling an old man story about this boil he had one time in Poland. That bit is slated for destruction. Steve, you're a super soldier, you probably can't get boils. (He says "Firstly, I got a boil when other men were dying of septicaemia, so have a little respect, and secondly, it was more of a carbuncle.")

Old man stories. I love writing this fic! [personal profile] lilacsigil will be giving me major side-eye when she reads this, because she had to sit through three weeks of hair tearing and chest beating while I got to this point.

(Also, I'm rapidly approaching the part where I really need to know what happens and I really don't know what happens. Again. Every year. I cannot plan for shit, I really can't.)

I work out twice a week with a personal trainer, and we meet at the local netball courts to do this - lately there's been this super cute blue heeler coming to vist me. She's a chronic escape artist - it's a heeler thing - and she pops across the road to see what's going on, and she has this adorable wriggly dance of "HEY PEOPLE I LOVE YOU IF I APPROACH BUTT FIRST WILL YOU PAT IT?".

This morning, I was doing crunches on the mat, and I had my eyes closed because I was dying. I could hear my trainer giggling, which seemed unusually cruel of her, so I opened my eyes to find doggie standing over me, gazing adoringly into my face.

There's a doggy under this cut, also some discussion of workout goals for this year )

The other thing I wanted to note down so I remember it (because it happened too fast for the phone) was on Tuesday. We were driving along the ridge of a gully, and there was a bird kerfuffle off to the left (my side, the passenger side.) When I looked left, I was eye to eye with an eagle, omg. It was flipping huge, flying through the gully, while magpies buzzed it. It's too late for chicks in the nest, so it must have had a go at the adults? Anyway, wedge tailed eagle, bloody enormous, flying like a boss with those amazing swoops they do, while two magpies about the size of its head chivvied it, fluttering over it and under it, and oh wow. It was like suddenly being in the middle of an aerial dog fight.

Eagle. Very big. (Sometimes they stoop on cars here and damage the roof with their talons.)

Bucky's been trying to set Steve up since 1935. Natasha's been trying to set him up since 2012. What's more logical than that they should join forces?

Bucky would like Sam Wilson to know that that is not actually a dirty joke about him and Nat, thank you and fuck off. (Even though it kinda is.)

I must have been on a bit of a poly bender? This is also Natasha/Steve/Bucky, and also has an excellent villain

Hooked on a Feeling (2901 words) by fmo
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel (Movies), X-Men - All Media Types
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: mildly a crossover with X-Men, Fluff, get-together
Summary:

Some guy creates a machine that gives everybody in New York mutant powers. Bucky gets empathy, which initially makes him very cranky, but later enables him to figure some stuff out that he might not have figured out otherwise, and ultimately turns out to be the very best power of all.

X-Men fusion, which is always like candy for me - who gets what power? What do they do with it? This is short, not particularly angsty, and very neatly done.

And back to the carbuncle mine I go.

Still haven't moved. Send help and reinforcements. The real estate agent has a tenant lined up for our old place; she keeps knocking on the door to ask when we'll be vacating so we can lease the house. IDEK. At least it won't be sitting empty. At least it's rentable without major renovations (and at least this tenant is willing to move in while the not so major renovations are done.)

I survived my major dental appointment by having a panic attack on the Sunday beforehand that was so intense and so horrifying that two hours of crown work was nothing to fear in comparison. The panic attack wasn't even to do with the the dental appointment - it was my mother's birthday on Sunday, and when I went to text her, I had to scroll and scroll to find our last communication, which was in January - hence panic attack and waves of self-loathing that far outweighed my fear of dentistry. I do not recommend this as a method of dealing with dental phobia. I feel like a piece of fruit leather at the bottom of a schoolbag. But the temporary crown is in and the next appointment is not so arduous. OR SO THEY TELL ME. /dire looks

Tinee media review:

- Doctor Who: tentatively enjoying it on the proviso that I read no negative reviews and allow myself to soak in a syrupy non-critical solution of self-care while watching it. A new Doctor is always a treat, in that assorted chocolates way. I don't really know what Twelve is like yet, but I'm pretty sure he's not a soft-centre. (OMG where is this analogy going? I release my grip on sanity! Let it go!)

- Reign: Watched the first two episodes and really, really enjoyed them. It's like, history on crack with fancy dresses and ooooh, boys, and lots of girls hugging.

Tinee linkspam:

- Seriously adorable crochet pattern: Crochet a baby Groot (warning for animated gif)

- Somewhat underbaked science that nonetheless rang true for me and my many hearing problems: Middle ear may hold answers for autism treatment (Warning for discussion of familial abuse)

- H/T to [personal profile] cofax7 for this one: The Most Amazing Lie in History (I feel like I want some kind of Peggy Carter encounter with this guy. Maybe Judy Dench's M can be in it, too. She must have been pretty deadly in WWII.

- Misty Copeland will be performing Swan Lake in Australia - this photo from her instagram is just beautiful. I love the strength and compassion on her face - I usually find Odette a bit mimsy, but this is amazing. (Eeeeeh, using facebook to embed from Instagram to my journal - this is a little too close to crossing the streams, if you ask me.)

Instagram clearly too evil - am hotlinking like a crime lord )

- I wish this scene had been in the Winter Soldier: This Is What Hawkeye Was Going To Do In Captain America: The Winter Soldier

- Speaking of Winter Soldier, [personal profile] famira has made a trillion textless icons from the movie: all under their Captain America tag. Go snaffle them up!

Since my last post, I've mostly been reading comics: re-reading Captain America's Winter Soldier arc, also Young Avengers (omg Miss America! Amerikate foreva!), Ms Marvel (omg the latest team-up killed me with the adorability).

Also made a bunch of icons suddenly and out of the blue: some Doctor Who, some Young Avengers which are, admittedly, 90% America Chavez )

And that's all there is. There isn't any more.
