Aaah, so many good vids.

Our House (Rated General) by [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmic_llin
Fandom: Ghosts (TV 2019)
Song: Our House by Madness
For a show I haven't watched but I sure am going to check out, which seems to be about a team of ghosts working cooperatively to oust new homeowners who want to turn the house into a hotel. Very funny, very snappy, lots of fun.

what's to come (Rated Teen, Jesus Christ/Judas Iscariot) by [archiveofourown.org profile] ryfkah
Fandom: Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (2018)
Song: Superstar, by Tegan and Sara
(More bts commentary over here at skygiant's dreamwidth)
Is it weird that often the perfect song is just something really unexpected? I wouldn't have picked this one in a million years and it is so good. So bitter and obsessed and inevitable. I've watched it a lot.

Apple Blossom (Rated General, Henry "Indiana" Jones/Marion Ravenwood) by [archiveofourown.org profile] lily_the_kid
Fandom: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Song: Apple Blossom by The White Stripes
An excellent, punchy Marion vid, with great comedic timing.

Let Me Go (Rated General) by [archiveofourown.org profile] kaydeefalls
Fandom: Moana
Song: Copenhagen by Vienna Teng
This gave me goosebumps - such a good song, such a good interpretation of Moana's journey.

Chldren's Work (Rated Teen, Michael Burnham and Spock) by [archiveofourown.org profile] such_heights
Fandom: Star Trek: Discovery
Song: Children's Work by Dessa
I cannot think of a better song to show their relationship than this one, and it's done so well.

Be Brave (Rated Teen, Amanda Grayson/Sarek, Michael Burnham & Spock) by [archiveofourown.org profile] pixie
Fandom: Star Trek: Discovery
Song: Meet Me on the Battlefield
This mixes canon from TOS, TNG, the third movie, and the reboot movie to give an amazing picture of this family unit. Wow.

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (Rated Teen, Michael Burnham & Mirror Philippa Georgiou) by [archiveofourown.org profile] starlady
Fandom: Star Trek: Discover
Song: Bury a Friend by Billie Eilish
Ngggghh ahahah. So funny, so hot, and so clever with the little asides in the song. Mirror Philippa is a damn treasure, and this vid knows it.

Grounds for Divorce (Rated General) by [archiveofourown.org profile] purplefringe
Fandom: Hamlet (2009)
Song: Grounds For Divorce by Elbow
This is for the David Tennant version, and it's so good. So sharp and stuttery. Ooof. I watched this one over and over. If you see one vid from the exchange, make it this one.

Past Imperfect, Future Unknown
I got two amazing gifts for this fest!

second turning, (Captive Prince, Rated Teen, Damen/Laurent)
Damen travels back in time to before when he and Laurent meet in the books, he knows what's to come, and he's trying to head it off. It is fascinating to read a Damen who loves Laurent, and a Laurent who would happily murder Damen. I love it - it's complicated and it's got all the feels, and it's beautifully written. Short, punch and full of feels. It's so good.

Broken Clock (Imperial Radch, Rated , Sphene/Captain Minask, Sphene and Queter)
A wonderful, world-buildy example of "Character Invents Time Travel to Save Loved One". Such a good Sphene voice, such an excellent dynamic with its new captain of sorts, Queter. This is very timey-wimey and clever with the twists and turns of a time-travel plot. And it gushes loyalty kink. I loved it.

One rec that wasn't a gift for me (but it was, in a way, because I loved the crap out of it):
Will the cycle be unbroken (BSG 2003, Rated G, Hera Agathon)
Adult Hera wakes up on a Cylon ship, before the Twelve Colonies are attacked. The fic has hints of Hera's life on New Earth, what it was like growing up in a culture of subsistence farmers made up of humans and Cylons. It builds on Cylon society. It's timey-wimey as fuck, and it's clever about the reasons for the Cylon attack in the first place. It's 14k of excellent story telling from a tough but relatively normal character. I really enjoyed it.

Chocolate Box opens soon, yay!! There's so many Person of Interest fics! I'm proud of my fandom.

I've not been around much, and I've been skipping my weekly posts at [community profile] podcastjoy for which I'm sorry - medical stuff is exhausting. I always forget how exhausting. Today wasn't even that bad, but we're both just flaked out on the sofa, exhausted. Hopefully we get a diagnosis soon and [personal profile] lilacsigil can start feeling better.
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
I passed the New Year by drinking half a bottle of champagne left over from Christmas and falling asleep. I am all class.

Re the horrifying bushfire situation, [personal profile] lilacsigil and I are currently
- not on fire
- very worried about people in fire areas
- may be on fire later in the summer
- having conversations on evacuation procedures and hating that this is our life now

It's rough, and I'm surprisingly upset by all the climate change deniers flushing out of the woodwork as the country burns. (This is a surprise because I know they're out there, I know what their agenda is, and there are better things to blow my mental cope on than their bullshit. And yet it still upsets me.)

I am seeking solace in Yuletide - so many good fics. (And also so many fandoms I've never heard of, which is great. Fandom is a big, sprawling land of people who love things, and it heartens me.) I have nowhere near read everything I want to, and have barely dipped into the Madness collection, but I want to get some recs out before reveals later today.

My gifts
I was so lucky this year!! Two in the main collection and a tiny gem of a treat from Madness:

Moonbase Theta, Out (Podcast)
An Evening in the Garden (Rated General, Roger Bragado-Fischer/Alexandre Bragado-Fischer)
A lovely gem of a moment, set before Roger goes into space to live on Moonbase Theta. Just so sweet and gentle and romantic.

A Discovery of Witches (TV)
In a Witch's Blood (Rated Explicit, Diana Bishop/Matthew Clairmont)
A whirlwind party at Sept-Tours, with Diana and Matthew negotiating vampire society. Sweet and romantic and hot.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street (book)
Interweave (Rated Explicit, Keita Mori/Thaniel Stephenson)
I am so glad to have gotten fic for my favourite read of 2019 and this is wonderful: perfectly in character, perfectly hot. Synaesthesia, ropes and clockwork. So good.

Recs:
Imperial Radch: (Shut up, I'm reccing all three fics because they're that good.)
High Above the Trees (Rated G, Breq and Awn Elming)
One of the best Awn Lives AUs I've come across, and an excellent, excellent picture of life with the Rrrrrr.

Worthy of Attention (Rated G, Gem of Sphene and Translator Zeiat)
Gem of Sphene and Translator Zeiat, tremendously weird in all the right ways, and also a surprisingly dark look at what it's like to be a Presger-grown translator. (Are they Significant? Zeiat doesn't actually know.)

Still Left in Want of Mercy (Rated Teen, Mercy of Kalr)
Mercy of Kalr POV, and it's so good! Seivarden is a mess, but a very Seivarden mess, and Mercy of Kalr helps her figure out some things. Also, I got a great Seivarden song out of this fic, too, which I greatly appreciate.

The Exorcist:
Little Church Mouse (Rated G, Mouse)
Some lovely backstory for Mouse, filling in the space between where we see her in flashbacks, to where we see her in the series.

The Middleman:
The Rock Star Reunion Irrelevancy
A really fun, punchy hair rock case, with lots of clever one liners. (Sweet child o' mine, Dubbie!)

Bake-off RPF/Untitled Goose Game:
To Do In Tent (Rated G)
Just the best definition of 'soggy bottom' ever. Clever and funny and full of terrible (excellent) puns. Puns and buns.

Sandman Comics:
An Explorer of Delirium (Teen, Delirium of the Endless)
From Yuletide Madness, appropriately. Joyful and a bit terrifying, as a Delirium story should be.

Russian Doll:
Commence! (Rated Teen, Nadia and Alan)
A lovely 'what happens next' story, as Nadia and Alan visit their friends, and try to piece together what actually happened to them.

Batwoman (TV):
Stir and Cook Slowly (Rated General, Mary Hamilton and Kate Kane)
This has a Jewish Kate Kane approaching Beth's yarzheit, and Mary trying to find a place as Kate's sister.

Anne of Green Gables:
Altogether Too Queenly (Rated Teen, Katherine Brooke/Anne Shirley)
I love Katherine, and this gives us some relationship history that really suits her character, and an excellent inner voice that really suits Katherine's character.

221b Baker Towers:
Full House, (Not rated)
221b Baker Towers is a shared Sherlock universe that reimagines the original characters as POCs living on a council estate in London. (You can read more about it at this tumblr: 221b Baker Towers: About.) This fic is fantastic, imagines Watson as part of a three generation family speaking Pashto round the dinner table, imagines Sherlock as trans, and puts together an excellent casefic of marginalised people. It's really well developed, and I would watch this series if it were in my TV.

Ugh, such a good Yuletide. I'm still reading.

"Write it together," I said, because I was not stupid, and because that was the nearest I was ever going to get to Michaelangelo phoning to ask if I wanted to paint a ceiling with him.

Reccin' Thursday
From [community profile] auexchange 2019

- The Witch-Wife's Tale by [archiveofourown.org profile] enviropony (Rated Mature, Black Sails, Miranda/Thomas/James)
AU where Miranda learns witchcraft, which saves her life and the lives of the people she loves. A really satisfying fixit, with a happy ending for my favourite threesome of this show. (And isn't it nice to be able to have more than one threesome in a show so I can have a favourite? Black Sails was great that way.)

- Math and Poetry and Gunmanship, by [personal profile] sholio (Rated Teen, Punisher, Frank and Leo Lieberman)
Leo is such a tough little nut in this post-apocalyptic AU, where she asks Frank to help her find her missing parents. It's great. (I would read the crap out of an YA series of this world, with all the weird tech and animal hybrids and monsters. IJS.)

- Flower of Justice by [archiveofourown.org profile] lea_hazel (Rated Teen, Imperial Radch, Breq and Seivarden)
Dragonrider AU, with an amazingly inhuman dragon Justice of Toren dealing with a Seivarden pulled out of a frozen lake. Splendid world building, and really clever translation of the Radch novels to a dragony world.

- even the last of the blue-eyed babies know by [archiveofourown.org profile] lastwingedthing (Rated Teen, GoT/Winter Soldier, Bucky and Shireen Baratheon)
It's a fun amalgam of the two worlds with lots of excellent survival stuff and teamwork, but I'm reccing this for the sheer glory of Bucky rushing Stannis's soldiers with a machine gun as they drag Shireen away to the pyre. The massive overpowering which would normally bug me is incredibly satisfying in this particular case. The best possible revenge for what actually happened to Shireen.

Not from [community profile] auexchange but it is an AU:
- Cracked by [archiveofourown.org profile] mad_maudlin (Rated Teen, Doctor Who, wee!Amelia & her aunt)
The summary is excellent and spooky as hell: "Something is the matter with Amelia." This is an AU where the Doctor travels with Amelia, told from the POV of the aunt who takes care of her after her parents disappear, and through the events of S5. Creepy as hell. I love that even while we know what's going on, and have a good idea of the Doctor's best intentions, it's all so malevolent from poor Auntie Sharon's perspective.
st_aurafina: (DCU: Batman is creeped out)
I've missed a bunch of reccing Thursdays, and the recs are building up. A couple of these came from [personal profile] musesfool's reccing comm, [personal profile] unfitforsociety which I'd also rec, because there's always great stuff there. (I heard you like recs, so I recced a recs comm in my recs post so you can get recs while you're getting recs...)

I started this post on SUNDAY, omg. And still totally missed reccing Thursday (on my end of the world, at least.)

Good Omens
A Nightingale Sang in Russell Square by [archiveofourown.org profile] melannen (Rated General, Rivers of London/Good Omens)
What happened at the end of the world, from Peter Grant and Thomas Nightingale's perspective. So many lovely canon details overlap in this, it's wonderful.

So You Need To Get Into A.Z. Fell & Co.; Now What? (A Guide For Unfortunate Bookworms) by [archiveofourown.org profile] arkhamcycle (Rated General, Aziraphale/Crowley)
An amazing collection of hints, tips and timetables to assist you in achieving your book purchases. Hilarious and adorable. I love all the little allusions to Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship in the background.

sign my name across your heart by [archiveofourown.org profile] sabinelagrande (Rated Explicit, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Crowley tries a few nicknames for his angel; it doesn't go well. Sweet and hot and beautifully written.

Are You There, God? It's Me, Crowley by [archiveofourown.org profile] marginalia (Rated Teen, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Five times Crowley prayed - lovely and gentle, and also there's a prize winning potato.

Leverage
Three Things Nate Made Parker Give Back When The Job Was Over (Because He's A Spoilsport) by [archiveofourown.org profile] penknife (Rated General, Leverage/MCU)
I think I like Parker's adventure with Stephen Strange best of all - she would get along very well with the cloak.

Five times the Leverage Crew was not in Gotham, no, really, they weren't, no by [archiveofourown.org profile] noelia_g (Unrated though I'd rate it General, Leverage/Nolan Batman movies)
Excellent flashbacks - I love that everyone except Nathan has a healthy fear of Gotham, and then Nathan has to go *poke* at it.

your body is a war zone but you are not a ruin by [archiveofourown.org profile] postcardmystery (Rated Explicit, Hardison/Parker/Eliot)
Eliot POV, hot and sweet and full of Eliot-style introspection.

I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal (and I Just Don't Get Any Respect) by [archiveofourown.org profile] fierclydreamed (Leverage/White Collar, Rated Teen, Gen)
Really good amalgam of the two show. The thing I like with crossovers of ensemble shows is finding out who has crossed paths with who, and this is one where there are several areas of overlap all handled in a clever and satisfying way.

Miscellaneous
I Can Go Twice As High by anonymous. (Rated G, Temeraire, f!Will Laurence.)
Lovely Temeraire art for [community profile] rule63exchange. F!Will is so dapper in Regency menswear, I love it. Worth clicking through to the large size to see the beautiful detail in this drawing.

Anything Goes by anonymous (Rated Teen, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, m!Willie Scott/Indiana Jones)
Eeee, drag performer Willie is amazing, and this fic is glorious. Another one from [community profile] rule63exchange

Bruise by [archiveofourown.org profile] misbegotten (Rated Mature, Craig!Bond Movies/DCU, James Bond/Bruce Wayne)
Short, punchy and super hot, and all in 100 words. It's exactly what a drabble is meant to be.

don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo by [archiveofourown.org profile] firstaudrina (Rated General, Stranger Things, Eleven/Max Mayfield)
Apart from having the perfect title, this is a sweet teenage penpal romance set after S3. (Which I haven't watched yet - I am just really enjoying the f/f shipping that is happening all over Tumblr. I'm sure the reality of canon will be much less satisfying.)

And that is me caught up on recs, yay! Now I can eat this mandarin, though it be full of pips.
st_aurafina: Grace Hendricks from POI (POI: Grace)
Cut for partner illness, cat illness, both are okay-ish )

Actually, I seem to recall that Pristiq gives me a bit of rage. Maybe that's where all the all-caps anger is coming from. I am not normally an all-caps person.

Thursday recs:
Yeah, it's Friday here. Come fight me! I'm on drugs now. *puts up fists*

- Excerpts from A.Z. Fell and Co.’s Yelp Page by [tumblr.com profile] itsclydebitches (Good Omens, Rated Teen, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Just what it says on the label: Yelp reviews. Very funny and sweet. (Also archived in plain text at AO3)

- sing for the angel a psalm of shadows by [archiveofourown.org profile] raven (Good Omens, not rated, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Five times Aziraphale attempted to tempt a human being and failed, utterly and completely, in service of God’s plan.

I'm always glad when I share a fandom with [personal profile] raven because they write so beautifully - this is lyrical and full of history and a little bit dreamy, with lots of non-binary angel love, and it makes me really happy to have read it.

- Turn by [archiveofourown.org profile] kass (Rated Explicit, Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Crowley broke the kiss again. "Angel," he said flatly, "where is your cock."

More non-binary angel love, which is exquisitely explained on a scholarly level, because [personal profile] kass is very clever like that. It's a lovely story, easy-going and beautiful and funny.

(I'm starting to see a pattern with me and Good Omens fandom: I don't want to create fanworks, but I sure as hell want to celebrate, especially all the old friends popping up. Also, genderqueer angels are my jam.)

- Things in Bloom by [profile] sunlitstone (Rated General, Person of Interest, John/Harold)

Just a really nice first kiss fic from this year's Not Primetime Exchange. Gentle slice of life stuff, as John lets Harold into his life a little bit.

(Yeah, I'm obviously craving fic that is soft and gentle. Like shredded chicken when you're a cat with no teeth.)
st_aurafina: Rainbow DNA (Default)
I think that posting regularly for [community profile] podcastjoy and weekly chapters of my long long fic is helping me get the posting habit. Finally, after, like, twenty years. I am truly surprised. Pleased, but surprised.

Thursday Recs:
- A Letter from Crawly to Azirapil by [tumblr.com profile] mostlydeadlanguages
Via [personal profile] kass this is actual cuneiform Good Omens fic on actual clay tablets. Amazing. (Aziraphale, stay away from that copper merchant, omg.)

- Cheap Therapy by [archiveofourown.org profile] corvidology (Rated Teen, John Reese & Linda Martin, Harold Finch/John Reese)
A Person of Interest/Lucifer crossover from [community profile] intoabar where John meets Linda and gets some much-needed mental health support. Really fun, and with a satisfying ending.

- fast, thorough, sharp as a tack by [archiveofourown.org profile] gsparkle for [community profile] marvelfemslashevents (Rated Teen, Maria Hill/Natasha Romanov)
Natasha and Maria get competitive. Clever and funny and flirty as hell.

- Killer Queen by [archiveofourown.org profile] purplefringe (Rated General, Good Omens vid)
Agnes Nutter and her descendents, being awesome. A perfect soundtrack.

Reccing Thursday (for some value of Thursday somewhere on this planet)

- Salim's Next 5 Wishes, by anonymous in [community profile] fandom5k
(Explicit, American Gods, the Ifrit/Salim)
Five things style fic for the two characters I felt the most about in S1. I'm not sure if it's spoilery for S2. I haven't seen Season 2 and it worked fine for me. And it's beautifully written, with joy and bittersweet moments, and an eventual happy ending.

- PRojects IN Controlled Environments, version Sith by [archiveofourown.org profile] bethwinter
(Star Wars Original Flavour, gen)
I keep finding stories about giant bureaucracies and the little niches that people make inside them, and this is wonderful: an project manager in the Empire, dealing with prima donna engineers and sabotage and a mysterious annotator injecting themselves into her pilot testing program. It's so good, and also there are lol-cats.

- How Falling in Love is Like Owning a Dog by Taylor Mali
Not a fic, but a poem! I found it when I was googling for a title for my Person of Interest Bear POV fic. I loved it a lot and I tried to work it in, but it didn't fit. So I will share it here: it's very New York-ish, very dog, if you know what I mean.

That three things meme: [personal profile] kass gave me Pot, Glass, Magnet

Pot: Can't wait for it to be legal in Australia. I think it has a place in mental health, in cancer treatment, in chronic pain management. Probably more. I am looking forward to being able to dispense it (if that's how it unfolds.) I think it's stupid that we've ignored a good and therapeutic agent for so long.

Glass: Hm. I am hopeful that we're going to get a glass-specific recycling bin soon in my region. It's being trialled in a township not far from here. Keeping glass separate from other recycling is supposedly very effective at increasing the efficiency of recycling overall. This desire is entirely to do with saving the planet and nothing to do with my love of sorting things into things. *nods*

Magnet: Welp. I don't have many magnet opinions. I wish I'd done a little better at physics; perhaps I'd feel stronger about them. Okay, compasses are cool. Also cool is the fact that we probably have little compasses in our heads: The sixth sense: can humans detect the Earth’s magnetic field?

Yay, I have magnet opinions after all! If you'd like three things, please ask.

Camp Nano

Jun. 22nd, 2019 09:31 pm
st_aurafina: (NaNo)
Camp NaNo starts in a week and a day - I'm thinking of running a cabin. Would anyone be interested? (and by 'running a cabin' I mean, I'll get it started, and I'll probably throw some sprints in the little chat box they give you, but other than that, I make no promises on content.)

I read something somewhere about not using asterixes to separate paragraphs because screen readers read them aloud as 'asterix asterix asterix'. (I'm trying to find the link, but I can't!! Argh!) A better way, apparently, is to use [hr] (only with < and >), so I'm giving that a try. It makes a line! There may be a little overuse as I get the hang of when and where I want to use it.

Heh.

Recs
I missed Reccing Thursday this week, but these are so good:

- White Flag by [archiveofourown.org profile] runawaynun (Vid, The Expanse, Teen)
The women of The Expanse. SO GOOD. (Quite violent? Show level violent, which is quite violent.) Spoilers for S3 presumably but I haven't seen S3 yet and I live to tell the tale.

- A Bullet is a Kiss by [archiveofourown.org profile] tristesses, (James Bond/MCU, Bond/Natasha, Explicit)
It's tagged 'sexy spy shenanigans' but it's got lots of feelings, too. The kind of spy story where they pick out bullets and suture their own wounds before they get down to the sexy stuff.

- 1,023 Days on Earth by [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmic_llin, (ST: TNG, Guinan, Gen)
Don't you love it when you come across a fic and comment on it, only to discover you've commented on it already? This is an older fic but so good: a prequel to Time's Arrow, with Guinan finding her way to independence.

- Gator-Proof Fence by [archiveofourown.org profile] burglebezzlement, (The Good Place, Jason, Gen)
Just an amazing Jason voice in this fic, as well as the way that Jason gets everything wrong and right at the same time.

- in the interests of intragalactic cooperation by anonymous (Original, General)
Alix Campbell is not particularly pleased to be on the list of staff for Earth's very first appearance at the Galactic Council.

- I grabbed this link when the GoT finale was going down (my condolences on that, people who are fans and did not enjoy it.) I've saved it to my writing resources tag because it's an excellent explanation of the difference between pantsers and plotters, and the benefits of each method. I'm blown away by the idea that pantsing might even have benefits. I've always thought of pantsing (ie, writing by the seat of your pants, with little or no plan) as a really bad idea and something I should try to avoid and yet never can. But in this series of tweets, it describes pantsers as people who write to find out what happened, which is EXACTLY what I do. And maybe I should be viewing that as a form of first draft, something that gets my story down. The link is here:

Want to know why Game of Thrones *feels* so different now? I think I can explain. Without spoilers.

It's talking in context of Game of Thrones and the way GRRM writes, and what that meant for the showrunners, but I found it really interesting for the way that I write.

- Also an excellent writing resource, this article talks specifically about Scottish Gaelic, but is applicable to using other languages in the body of you work, how to make good decisions about those words and make them mean something in the narrative:

Exchange of Interest 2019.

My gift: Fighting Evil By Moonlight (Rated Mature, Root/Shaw)
10k of rollicking paranormal AU, with werewolf-hunting cops. It's kinda Anita Blake-ish, with Root/Shaw instead of Anita/everybody.

Also excellent:
About a Bird (Explicit, Nathan/Harold)
Nathan and Harold at MIT together in the eighties, super nostalgic and full of that sticky dorm room carpet style nostalgia

The Unemployable Leon Tao (Rated Teen, Leon & Shaw & Fusco & Bear)
Wonderful post-finale fic, with Shaw and Fusco rebuilding and recruiting, and Leon Tao trying to knit them together into a team.

I was going to make a post about how I've been quiet because life has been a bit garbage, but this morning I woke up and things were a little bit okay?

Cutting the bad stuff: illness, work issues, death in the community )

While this was going on, I somehow managed to churn out 1000 words a day for Camp Nano in April, and finish one of my big WIPs, clocking in at 80k. I'm editing that now, and I hope I can start posting soon. I finished my gift fic for the Person of Interest exchange and I'm tooling around with some treats now. (Weirdly, while we were in hospital I had this urge to go back and re-read my Twin Peaks/X-Files crossover, and I've only just now realised that I wrote that the last time there was major health stuff going on. Maybe I write more when I'm stressed? IDK I can live with writing less, if that's the case.)

I guess my theme is unexpected crossovers that work really well?

For King and Country by [archiveofourown.org profile] killalla (Harold Finch/John Reese, Teen)
The crossover here is Person of Interest/Lord Darcy Series - Randall Grant. As far as I can tell (and I'm sure someone on my flist will know more) the Lord Darcy Mysteries is an contemporary alternate history where the Plantagenets survive and also there is magic? I don't know more than that, and this fic works, because it's all iddy hand kissing and fealty swearing and THAT IS GOOD YES.

of course it's beastly when anybody dies by [archiveofourown.org profile] suitablyskippy, (Gwendoline Lacey, general)
The crossover here is Malory Towers/Death Note, where Darling Gwendoline finds the notebook. This is dark and messed up, and Gwendoline is exactly as awful as you'd expect with the power of life and death in her hands.

Lastly, fic rec: An excellent and well-written Root/Shaw fic that has just finished up, where Root is a cross-roads demon. It has loyalty kink in spades, it's clever and plays with mythology really well, and it has a very satisfying and oddly happy ending considering the set-up.

It's all fire and brimstone, baby (21730 words) by canadianwheatpirates
Chapters: 11/11
Fandom: Person of Interest (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Root/Sameen Shaw
Characters: Root, Sameen Shaw, John Reese, Harold Finch, Michael Cole, Joss Carter
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Crossroads Demon, demon!Root, canon divergent - Decima never happens, unsafe depictions of blood magic, ritual self-harm, Canon-Typical Violence, offscreen canon-typical torture, shoot week 2017, Nobody Actually Dies, it just has a super deathy vibe there for a while, Blood Bond
Summary:

“Some saw the sudden illness and death as some form of possession – the devil inside Samantha finally overpowering her and her whole family – and a small party laid her to rest at the crossroads outside of town with a stake through her heart. Many believe that she still resides at that crossroads as a demon who waits for the bold or the desperate to call upon her.”

Shaw summons a crossroads demon. It goes as well as you would expect.

Brain report:
It goes up tiddly up up, it goes down tiddly down down. But it goes up? I guess that's good. I'm back to two sessions a week with my trainer and I think it's giving me a mood boost, but with every mood boost comes a kind of mood flop. I wake up, I feel good and optimistic for a few hours, then it feels like the ground has dropped out from under me and I wonder what the point is to existence.

It's one year since 60% of Australia voted to let me get married. I am surprised at how bitter I am about the whole fucking thing. Every time I see my straight friends on facebook congratulating themselves on being so openminded, I want to cry. I mean, in that twelve months I didn't get married. I weaned myself off the extra antidepressant I had to start taking so I wouldn't have panic attacks in public during the debate. Fuck off, fuck off, fuck off. (And down tiddly down down...)

Okay. Up. Go up, brain. There are lots of good things in my life. I have a big bang to post at the end of the month! I'm 22K into this year's NaNo! I have lots of lovely wool to work with! It's okay. I can manage this.

Garden report:
Tomatoes went in the beds on Cup Day (the first Tuesday in November) as is traditionally recommended by old gardners who know things. We've got three from Bunnings (big box hardware): Grosse Lise, mini Roma truss and Nonna's Favourite. And from seed I've got Green Zebra and Red Pear in the beds. In the greenhouse there's Orange Sunrise Bumblebee (this is too many adjectives for a tomato, IJS), valentines, and Wapsipinicon Peach which is apparently a fuzzy tomato. (Not sure if want? But could not resist trying to grow it.)

Cucumbers: Lebanese and Crystal Apple. Zucchini: Blackjack and Costata Romanesco. Climbing beans: Purple King, European and Northern. Peas: purple and yakimono giant. (The giant peas really are huge. Fingertip to wrist in length.) I've optimistically started eggplants - Long Purples, which I call Lebanese - and put lots of dynamic lifter on this time but they've been stalled at the two-leaf stage and I think I really can't grow eggplant which is one of life's cruel ironies.

Is that everything? Lime and Genovese basil... Some other rando tomato leftovers from years past that I can't remember. Oh, purple spring onions, but they're still at the skinny chive-looking stage. Celery is finishing up. Broccoletti is getting lots of brockles. Spinach has been slumbering all through winter, sadly, but is now starting to get leafy.

Recs
Fic rec of great love from the Person of Interest Big Bang:
Just One Stray Match (41961 words) by loveandthetruth, livenudebigfoot
Chapters: 14/14
Fandom: Person of Interest (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Lionel Fusco/John Reese
Characters: Lionel Fusco, John Reese, Harold Finch, Sameen Shaw, Root | Samantha Groves
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Firewatch Fusion, Cabin Fic, Wilderness, Hiking Porn
Summary:

1989. Lionel Fusco doesn't belong in the woods in general or the Shoshone National Forest in particular. But he doesn't need to be a good fire lookout. He just needs a place to hide.

Unfortunately for him, he's been found.

---
It's an AU set well before the series, and it's a fusion with Firewatch, a mystery video game where you play someone living in one of those firewatch cabins in the forest looking out for brushfires. It's so good. It's loyalty kink and examining who you really are when you're outside your comfort zone. It's an ode to Fusco and his utter goodness (which as a dirty cop can be problematic.) It's a love song to National Parks and hiking and living wild in isolated places.

If you're not familiar with the fandoms, I'd still rec it, since it takes place long before we get to know the characters from the show, and you don't need much canon info. Think of it as a story about a disheartened dirty cop who takes a summer job he's completely unsuited for, and falls for a mysterious and traumatised stranger living wild in the forest.

(Bearing in mind the week that California has had, if you're unhappy reading about fire or fire damage, this one probably isn't for you.)

tl;dr, it's the kind of fic that makes you pick up a fandom - I've got the Firewatch game in my wishlist on Steam for the next time it goes on special.

- Singing Again at Seven Bells by selden, from the Original Works Exchange. I'd say "Lady pirate mermaid femslash" and that would ordinarily be enough for me, but there's so much more going on in this fic. Fire Update: still not on fire )

Other non firey things in my life:

- Saw Black Panther, was amazed and delighted, would see again many times. Also there was a couple of seventy year olds on a movie date there in the middle of the day. Total relationship goals.

- survived the codeine apocalypse at work, when all pain killers with codeine were rescheduled to prescription only. Even though we survived, I still maintain this is a shitty way to manage drug dependence. Also now I have nothing but paracetamol or ibuprofen (or diclofenac) to sell people who have had teeth pulled or been mashed by cows. And gastric bleeds are on the up and up at the hospital.

- I had my dental check up and I need a crown to support an old filling that is giving up on life. I call this tooth my Snape tooth, because I planned out a long and involved Snape fic while I got the original filling put in. I can't remember the plot of the fic anymore, but the name persists.

- I got to buy yarn! I am teaching my sister to crochet, and she chose this pattern for her next project: Free Crochet Floor Pouf Pattern. It's interesting the things she chooses - I mostly made hats and scarves when I was starting out, but she goes in entirely different directions.

- Thanks to my Black Sails watching, I decided to give Master and Commander another go, this time on audio book. *gigglesnorts* There are a lot of very rude naval terms in this book, even allowing for the endless boatfuls of seamen which is ridiculously funny when spoken aloud. When it comes to audio books, I am five apparently. FUTTOCK SHROUDS.

- We got a compost bin. [personal profile] lilacsigil is delightfully nerdy about what can and cannot be composted and it pleases me very much.

- Watching things on the tablet screen is fantastic and means that [personal profile] lilacsigil can catch up on all the things she's been missing out on due to vertigo. We finished The Exorcist S1 and are going to start on rewatching S2, and we're chugging along through Brooklyn 99. She says she will not watch Black Sails, though why she would want to miss out on all those futtock shrouds, I don't know.

- I don't know who recced this fic, but it's adorable and I hope there's more: Kimmy Gets A Subletter! (Titus Gets An Historical Romance) by [archiveofourown.org profile] rokhal, a Winter Soldier/Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt mashup.

I had pho for lunch yesterday and I will do the same today. It has a fuckton of ginger in it and I have a streaming cold so hopefully it will help. Yesterday, David Bowie came on while I was eating. ETA: Omg so much ginger. So much chilli. *fans face*

I have been quiet! But here and reading and also writing. Australia is (maybe) having a postal vote to determine if we will (finally) have same sex marriage. You'd think that would be a good thing, but the campaign for No is utterly vomitous. Like, I get up in the morning, casually read about how my relationship is the gateway to legalising bestiality, then get on with my job. As you do. And I know there are bigger and more life-endangering crises happening around the world, but that's a nasty and heavy stone to for me carry around. It has been leaving me very wordless at the end of each day.

It is also making me quite tense. AS YOU CAN FREAKING IMAGINE. But there's a stupid platform game where Tony Abbott appears and shoots lasers from his eyes. It's cheap. But it made me laugh: Going Postal

I can tell from my linkspam collection that I went into silent survival mode around the time of the Charlottesville attacks.

- Early breaking meme for 2017: I LIK THE BREAD, from Health Inspectors of Reddit, what's the worst violation you've ever seen?:
My stepdad used to be a baker in an authentic recreation of an 18th century New French fortress. Because they sell bread to the public, the health inspector came by, and she was ripping into my stepdad for violations like the stonework walls, the doorless entranceways, or the lack of a mosquito zapper. He pointed out that they were following the highest standards except for things that would destroy the authenticity of this 18th-century bakery. The health inspector relented and agreed to give him a pass after verifying the food storage area was secure. They went to the shed, which was a doorless building attached to the bakery. As the health inspector went in, there happened to be an escaped cow licking all of the loaves. My stepdad could only say, "Honestly, this never happens." They passed the health inspection.

tl;dr: Health inspector witnesses escaped farm animal licking all the bread in a bakery, passes health inspection anyway

No, actually I do have more to say. Spoilers for 5.10 and 5.11 )

To that end, I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang, which has another round starting now.

ETA: While I type this, I am listening to [personal profile] lilacsigil school our software company on not having a no-gender option in our dispensing software. ("No, it's Federal law. You have to have it.") She is the awesome.
st_aurafina: Shaw's face, caption: you beat the devil's tattoo (POI: Shaw devil's tattoo)
I'm torn on this whole new canon thing for Person of Interest, because on the one hand, we're getting massive plot advancement, but on the other, I really want them to go back to mid-S3, with Finch in the library, Reese and Shaw working numbers, and Root dancing around all of them in her chaotic way. I don't think we're going to get that, and I don't think it would be narratively satisfying if we did, but that part of the show is such a happy place for me. *clings*

Totally random Person of Interest fic recs:

Does It Lessen Your Affection? by JinkyO (Root/Shaw/the Machine, explicit)
Root with the Machine in her ear, weirdly hot voyeuristic sexy tiems.

Code Indigo by pendrecarc
Gen AU where Finch teams up with Shaw first up, instead of Reese. (It's an older fic, so she's Samantha Shaw, before we knew Sam = Sameen.)

a creature more of night than day by the_ragnarok (Explicit, Harold/John)
AU where Finch is a vampire. I KNOW OKAY, but he wrote a clause in the TOS of his software that grants him entry to houses, which is adorable and so in character. And I appreciate that attention to detail. ([personal profile] lilacsigil, yes, this is the one where he turns into tiny owls.)

Phoenix and the sequel, Halcyon by hedda62 (Explicit, Grace/Harold/John)
Harold has a really stupid idea, which I totally love, because he is so the kind of person to set his two most beloved people up with each other in the event that he's killed or whatever. I really love how Grace is written in this - strong and doing fine without Harold because she's able to look after herself, but so amazingly pissed off when she finds out what's been going on. And so kind to John.

but i'm not the girl you once put your faith in (just someone who looks like me) by violentdaylight (Explicit, Iris/John)
There's not a lot of Iris fic (and I'm always braced for the inevitable hate that a female character gets when she's perceived as the wedge that comes between a juggernaut m/m pairing) but this is Iris POV and it's awesome. (It's tagged as dubcon and d/s elements but that's very, very subtle. If you're not looking for it, or if you don't usually read kink fic, I think it's not going to bother you.)

So, apparently we get three episodes next week? I don't know how to deal. My body is nowhere near ready.
