I'm up to cataloguing the pony books for LibraryThing, and I'm in a delicious sweat of pre-teen nostalgia. I loved these books so much! I read the pages thin. I bought hundreds of them for twenty cents at book sales, and I pored over the details of the horses and the riders and the problems and the successes and it was awesome. I love that the books I bought had already been someone's treasures, and I love all the names carefully written inside the covers.
Titles include: Ponies on the Heather, Pony Duet, We Hunted Hounds, The Trick Jumpers, The Stolen Ponies, The Pony Dopers, Jackie Won a Pony, Kit Hunter - Showjumper, The Pony Plot, I Won a Pony, Jill's Gymkhana and Clear Round.
There are so many. I had to take an antihistamine, these books are so dusty.
I have four copies of "I Had Two Ponies" and one copy of "I Had Six Ponies". Fourteen ponies, dude!
Also, the Pullein-Thompson sisters wrote a scary number of books, and I'm starting to imagine an RPF-style life for them, where they all live at their riding school, and foster a love of horsemanship in other pony-book authors who live there too, like Joanna Cannan and Elinore Havers and Gillian Baxter. It's like all the best, most slashy school stories ever, with ponies as an added bonus.
I found my copy of the original pony book - Black Beauty, where brave and noble horses were tortured with cruel bearing reins and starved. *sniffles* Is it wrong to think that Black Beauty was a tiny bit kinky? Anna Sewell thought very hard about what it feels like to have a bit in your mouth.
If you're morbidly curious about this whole pre-teen pony thing, the cover of the book under this cut pretty much sums up all I wanted to be in 1980.
