I want to stomp on your macarons
Feb. 27th, 2011 09:20 pmI feel I should keep some kind of record of all the things I've made in my state of panic. This is over the last fortnight.
Mini Nutella Brownies - this is a cute little recipe either for a dozen mini-brownies or 6 smallish brownies. I've never made brownies in cupcake form before, it's much less messy.
Salted Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies - After a fortnight of sprinkling sea salt on everything, I am getting over the need to salt sweet things.
Pogaca, Turkish rolls with goat's cheese - these were more like pastries, when they came out. I should have realised from the amount of butter and olive oil I was putting in. Still, they kept really well. Fat does that for bread.
Lemon Slice - I guess they'd be Lemon Bars in the US? Anyway, it's a classic Nana recipe, this one. I doubled up the lemon juice in the icing, without upping the icing sugar. That was a mistake. But they were still tasty.
Chocolate Nutella Peanut Butter Fudge - What is fudge, anyway? What is this weird-ass stuff? It's basically the ingredients in the title melted together and left to set. It tastes okay, but the texture is freaky, oddly flesh-like. And because it's mostly commercial products, I feel it will keep for ever.
Turkish Pide - I only vaguely followed this recipe - I wanted to add yoghurt, so I did that instead of milk. And the amount of flour was very vague - I just went by texture. I've never made an instant yeast bread that started with a sponge before, I only do that with my sour dough culture. It worked well! But I'm not going to bother with all the palaver of heating the trays at the end. That was silly - I'll just put the dough down on a floured tray and let it rest there for half an hour. And omg, nigella. It is the king of seeds. I've had this one bag of nigella seeds for an eternity, and I've basically used it all in the last fortnight.
Best Zucchini Fritters ever - I don't know if this claim is true, but they were very tasty. A customer (who is also a gardening guru) brought in a comedy huge zucchini on Friday, so I wanted a recipe that would use it up. They were really tasty! I don't have parsley at the moment - mine's all gone to seed - but I used basil instead, and they were very summery. Would cook again.
Mostly, when I'm feeling anxious but imobile, I cruise through Tastespotting and bookmark likely recipes. Then, when I'm feeling anxious and frenetic, I cook. It's a coping strategy. We still have a month to go. I'm eyeing a recipe for brandy snaps right now. Tastespotting is a pretty good round up of food blogs, even though every second recipe is fucking macarons right now, what is it with macarons? I don't get the fascination - they're biscuits coloured with food colouring.
lilacsigil called the Nuclear Medicine department, and spoke to them about what facilities she'll actually have in her room. She'll have a phone! And they said she can bring a computer, as long as it doesn't have a signal (so no internet, boo), and it won't have to be burned. They'll store it for her and when it's no longer radioactive, she can have it back. So now, she's loading an old laptop with comics and games and TV, so she'll have something to do and watch while she's in her lead room.
They want her to have two showers a day to reduce the amount of radioactivity on her skin. Presumably they won't be Silkwood showers.

Ikea instructions for Stonehenge. This explains so much about my experiences with Ikea. Maybe I should have consulted a druid.
lilacsigil, on the other hand, has no problems assembling their furniture. (Maybe she is a druid?)

junetide is an original fic and art exchange. I think this is an awesome idea. There's a discussion post on how how the exchange could go here.
staranise is hosting a cranky meme, which has been fun to drop by and see if I can help make someone's day less cranky. I'm not cranky, myself, surprisingly, so I don't have a thread of my own to link here, but if you're on it, link me so I can see if there's something I can do to alleviate your cranky somewhat.
I, um, have a fic to post, but I need a beta. And my usual beta is hibernating right now, though she's had a read-through, in that 'Please tell me this makes sense and uses words in a coherent manner' way. It's for the Sanctuary kink meme, it's a Torchwood crossover, Declan/Jack, with reference to Watson/Jack and Watson/Declan. About 1800 words, rated R.
Would anyone be willing to have a look at it? I can pay in everlasting fudge.

Date: 2011-02-27 12:43 pm (UTC)My thoughts exactly! I thought fudge would be more gooey or custardy?

Date: 2011-02-27 01:03 pm (UTC)It has a weird, fleshy, toothy texture, and it's heavy like plutonium. I fear it. I suspect it glows in the night.

Date: 2011-02-27 01:41 pm (UTC)I prefer fudge to many chocolate sweets because a well made pan can be cut in 1/2 inch cubes that satisfy my craving in that tiny bite.

Date: 2011-02-27 07:49 pm (UTC)Um, I need to ask what the kink is, though

Date: 2011-02-28 08:12 am (UTC)As far as I can tell, the kink in the Sanctuary kink meme seems to be "They get their gear off and have sex." There are some fills that are gen. But you know - more fic is good.
Thank you! I'll send it on. There's no rush, don't stress out.

Date: 2011-03-01 01:38 am (UTC)Anyway. That is a ton of baking. I am envious of both the baking and the eating of the baked goods. Good way to get rid of anxiety, I'd say. ^_^
