Goodbye to a dear old lady
Jan. 21st, 2006 11:26 amMandy, our very old pony was euthanised just before Christmas. She was 32, and had been astonishingly healthy for her age, with most of her teeth, and enough energy to be flirty with the other horses. She developed an abscess in her eye, and the prospect of an operation to remove her eye was going to be a very big strain on her health. The vet was very concerned about her going into shock, and suddenly my parents realised that although she was healthy, she was frail, and it wasn't fair to put her through the ordeal. I wanted to post a photo at the time, but had to get my mum to scan and mail it to me.

She was kind but stern, and looked after our family while we were learning about horse care. We knew nothing, and she knew everything, and she only rarely took advantage of that.
