That was amazing, in so many ways

First X-Files episode ever acquired by dubious means - there was no downloading when I watched it air in the nineties.
I got all wibbly in the credits - they used the old credits! Skinner's in there now!!
It was really, really bad. Like, padded and hysterical and approximately 93% Chris Carter's id in voice-over form. Nothing actually happened. Like, nothing.
I don't even care.
Dana's eye-rolling and total "I'm done with your shit, Mulder" expression has not changed one bit.
(It is not cool to get covered in blood during surgery, by the way. That is a thing that doctors try to avoid.)
Skinner's beard! SKINNER.
It's so great to see people popping up on my flist who I remember from forever ago. This fandom was the start of the internet for me. I think one of the first things I used a search engine for was X-Files related. (Remember the Noromos and the MSRs and all the amazing fic? I remember.)
FFA's discussion is lovely and nostalgic
lilacsigil and I used to have X-Files dates. (I was like, "You have to watch this show. You will love this show!) When Home first aired, she was living in Japan and I had just gotten my first grown-up job, and I spent some of my first precious salary to telephone her and tell her how horrible and terrifying that episode had been, while I soaked my poor sore feet in a blue plastic basin that we still own.
We were such tiny babies back then. Now look at us, together and well and all grown up. *sheds another tear* I'm so glad.

Date: 2016-01-25 02:25 pm (UTC)This was a bit of surprise, because the show I always loved was Mulder And Scully Look For Monsters And Do Not Find Them, not the Mulder And Scully Look For Alien Conspiracies And Do Not Find Them, Either show that interrupted it a couple of times a season. I started watching during Season Four and the mythology had already stopped making much sense by that point, so I never got very invested in it.
I have so many memories! The first fanfic I ever read was X-Files fanfic! It was everywhere, including pages where I went looking for episode guides so I could try to understand what I'd missed. Then I though 'hmmmmm, I wonder if people write X-Men fanfic too ...' and my fate was sealed for all time.

I have so many Geocities-coloured memories! I think the first really porny fic I ever read was X-Files - the first actual fic I ever read was X-Men, but that was mostly gen.

I am super excited about Darin Morgan's episode next week - I liked everything he ever wrote for the show, and Jose Chung's From Outer Space is my favourite episode ever. I even thought that the second episode was also pretty good, instead of terrible but loveable!

When I first got online, I was in Year Twelve and was allowed to have access to the two whole computers in the school that were connected to the internet because I was doing half of my subjects by Distance Ed. I spent literally all my spares downloading fanfiction onto floppy disks, much of it X-Files porn. I look back on this with horror at my audacity, but if any of the adults who used the relevant computers knew how to check a browser history, they never read far enough to realise what I was doing.
My BFF and I, who met via Old Skool comics fandom the same way you and I did, were reminiscing the other day about that time when literally everything seemed to be angsty stories about Rogue not controlling her powers and happy stories about her controlling her powers and banging Gambit. To this day, one of us only has to say 'think of it as a love grotto!' to make the other crack up.

Date: 2016-01-25 06:43 pm (UTC)I agree with the random blood on Scully being something a good doctor would want to avoid. I wonder if there was a scene there that got (ha ha, sorry) cut.
And, yeah, the overarching Chris Carter theory of "one conspiracy to bind them all" didn't work for me, either. :p
But Scully's back on my TV and I am happy again.

Date: 2016-01-25 10:42 pm (UTC)...I find myself not wanting to try to love it again, because of all I left behind and because it's a limited and...
Well, it's tangled in not having the right person to watch it with as well.
But I hope y'all enjoy it.
