Diana thought the protest like a festival: loud, passionate and filled with wise women. Etta was chained to the gate, the chain passing under her clothes. "They daren't touch me now," she said, knitting furiously.
"Etta," said Diana. "Your children are worried."
Etta looked at her sternly over her glasses. "Well, I'm doing this for them. Push off, darling. They're bringing the bolt cutters."
She rattled her chain as a signal. "Remember, ladies! Strength through peaceful protest!" The other women cheered and rattled their chains.
Diana got out of the way. Etta, like an Amazonian general, had rallied her troops.

Cheryl nestled against Jughead's chest, warm and content. She ignored the tapping at the window.
Juggy couldn't. "Um, Cheryl?"
Cheryl sighed. Why were people so difficult? "Jason will go when I'm sleeping. He just wants me to know he cares."
Jughead watched the spectre press its face to the glass. It wasn't a caring expression, exactly.

At the Lodge residence, Veronica brandished a crucifix at the balcony door.
"Fuck off, dead Jason!" she shouted. Startled, Jason drifted backwards.
Angry suddenly, Cheryl made a decision. "Leave my dead brother alone! We're a package deal. You want me, you get him too."

The explosion was a wave of heat. When Audrey opened her eyes, she saw curtains, a geometric black and white floor.
She wandered through room after room. Once, she saw Laura's father crouched in an armchair. He snarled, fingers curled into the upholstery, but did not leap.
Agent Cooper moved towards her with crisp and confident steps. He smiled tenderly, kissed her lips.
"Go home," he said, his voice drawling and odd. "Audrey, this is no place for you."
He pushed her through the curtains. She woke with hospital linen beneath her fingers, and cried for something forgotten but lost.

Brittany doesn't question the ethics of eating meat. She's a retired killer. She knows death – she's been death. She's not afraid to eat it. Or photograph it.
She swims in blood-tepid water with a pod of orange porpoises that slip over and around her body like they're in a pot of swirling noodles. One of them brings her a starfish, twenty-legged and spiny, then corkscrews away, delighted with itself.
At her hotel, the chef is ecstatic: the starfish is a delicacy, he would love to prepare it for her. Brittany forgoes the porpoise sashimi that night. It's been paid for.
