I loved the description on
fandomcalendar: So if you want to see those Jane Austen heroines have a nice orgy with each other, or if you have untold wtf fantasies about Rochester (who hasn’t), or if you really want that Bingley/Darcy hurt/comfort fic this is the place for you.

- I grabbed this link when the GoT finale was going down (my condolences on that, people who are fans and did not enjoy it.) I've saved it to my writing resources tag because it's an excellent explanation of the difference between pantsers and plotters, and the benefits of each method. I'm blown away by the idea that pantsing might even have benefits. I've always thought of pantsing (ie, writing by the seat of your pants, with little or no plan) as a really bad idea and something I should try to avoid and yet never can. But in this series of tweets, it describes pantsers as people who write to find out what happened, which is EXACTLY what I do. And maybe I should be viewing that as a form of first draft, something that gets my story down. The link is here:
Want to know why Game of Thrones *feels* so different now? I think I can explain. Without spoilers.
It's talking in context of Game of Thrones and the way GRRM writes, and what that meant for the showrunners, but I found it really interesting for the way that I write.
- Also an excellent writing resource, this article talks specifically about Scottish Gaelic, but is applicable to using other languages in the body of you work, how to make good decisions about those words and make them mean something in the narrative:
How to Use Scottish Gaelic in Your Novel, Part 2: An Example
Baggins got sick at the end of May, but he's better now:
At the time I was pretty sure he was done for - he's fourteen which is technically elderly - but he pulled through what we're calling the Night of a Thousand Barfs. All he has to do now is regrow his magnificent ruff, which was shaved to get many blood samples. Poor boy.
The vets think maybe chronic pancreatitis, possibly triggered by stress? Possibly triggered by a mild UTI? Possibly triggered by *shrug emoji*?
The next time it looks like he's heading into a barf-fest, we're getting to him early with the metoclopramide, because I'm pretty sure that once he starts barfing, he panics, which starts a barf-panic-barf cycle that ends up with him dehydrated and stressed out of his brain. And me stressed out of my brain.
Anyway, he's better now. The ninny.

lilacsigil's cat is bossy, and my cat is an anxious bag of nerves.

Lionel Fusco has a moral compass. But, like, an actual one. He keeps it in his pocket and sometimes he argues with it.

Date: 2019-06-11 11:33 am (UTC)I know that being a Pantser isn't necessarily a bad thing, I realize that's not their point, but I do wonder if just going with the flow has been detrimental to me. After all, I can't do it well IRL, why should I be able to with my writing?
Sorry, I know that's not at ALL the point, it just gave me a lot to think about.

Date: 2019-06-12 06:24 am (UTC)I feel this so much! This is what I got from the article about writing to find out what happens - it is definitely a thing I do.

Date: 2019-06-12 06:19 am (UTC)Right? Me too - I am a pantser extraordinaire, and I always feel a vague sense of guilt about it, but the article pointing out that we pantsers get good characterisation even if our plot is wanting was kind of liberating.
But yeah, going with the flow does not lead to good plot resolution, I do admit to that.

Date: 2019-06-11 01:55 pm (UTC)That GoT writing article was so interesting. As a pantser it gave me a lot to think about. (Maybe... .just maybe, I will do NaNo properly this year.)

Date: 2019-06-12 06:26 am (UTC)I am surprised at how many pansters are here - maybe it's a fandom thing? Or maybe all the plotters are keeping silent and plotting?

Date: 2019-06-16 09:27 am (UTC)Yes! I've learned to embrace it. Planning is boring. If it leads to multimillion dollar franchises bashing their heads against the wall, I might reconsider. But at the fannish level we're operating? Go fly, pants! <3

Thank you - kitty is doing better now. <3
