Icon post for July

I had to wait while a couple of icontests finished up before I posted my icons from July. Last month I set myself some goals, which I more or less ignored. Not only did I not enter any Harry Potter icontests, I didn't make a single HP icon. Experimenting (with more radical cropping, using little pictures inside big pictures, changing the angle of text) is SCARY. It's very reassuring to scamper back to my comfort zone of bright colouring with a nice frame.

On the positive side, I won two icontests, and placed in a few others. I'm in a LIMS (last icon maker standing) contest that's ongoing, and I've yet to be eliminated, though there's only been two rounds so far. I like entering the contests, and it's a nice surprise when I win something.

1# is Emma Frost, #2 is Ultimate Wanda and Pietro (thank you sionnain for introducing me to their strange love: I dedicate this icon to you!)
#3 is Cable and Domino. These were all icontest entries, hence the eclectic choice of charaters. This is the best thing about icontests - I would never have made an icon of Cable and Domino, such a thing would never have occurred to me.

#4 - #11 are from 1602. #4 is Captain Foggy Nelson (I wish there had been more of him! He would make a great privateer!) 1602 is on my mind as I work on my story for 1602ficathon.

#12 - #14 are Firefly, also for icontests.

#15 - #17 are Doctor Who. These are not good icons, but they are my first nervous attempts at breaking out of the square, or cropping bravely. I think I cropped a little too bravely in #17. I've posted them here to remind myself that things will improve.

#18 is POTC, Captain Jack. I'm mingling bright colours with brave cropping. It's not necessarily successful, but I do think it's pretty. Also, one needs a POTC icon. Should one ever get the chance to see DMC, one will have a bucketful of fics by penknife and artaxastra to read.

#19 - #24 were made for various stock icontests communities, and for the LIMS at bwcolour_stills. The turtles were made foranimal_icontest, and this week is polar bears. So cute!

Next month's goals:

- Make some Harry Potter icons, for heaven's sake!

- Think harder about cropping, try to be creative without being insane, such as just putting in the unidentifiable crown of someone's head.

- Work harder to make text interesting, use more tiny text, though it makes lilacsigil crazy (yes, we are sending secret messages in the tiny text!)

- Think of icons as a one word fic. Focus on the meaning.
