Day two: I still live!
Nov. 2nd, 2007 11:37 pmZOMG! *falls over and expires*
The Winter River was spanned by an arching bridge bordered with neat drystone walls on either side of the narrow road. Jane craned her neck as she crossed into Winterbach, but the river had cut a deep crevasse into the land, and all she could see over the rim of the wall were the arching branches of willow trees clustering on the edge of the river, long graceful arms trailing down as though they were scooping the water up greedily to their invisible mouths.
I am getting to know Jane and Miranda better, and I'm finding that in third person, away from the interview structure that I was using to get to know them in the research phase, they're not as scary as I thought. I'm having fun writing about them. The getting up early in the morning part, I'm not liking as much, but tomorrow is a short day at work, and then I have the weekend.
Things I've learned today:
Let the characters do what they want to do, within reason.
Let the story unspool at a steady pace - this is not a short fic, I don't necessarily have to be concise. I don't need to fear the story dragging.
I'm probably going to be using about ten percent of the research I did, and use much less of the background detail I cooked up. And that's okay.
It was fun today. Here's to a good weekend.
