Music Tiemz!
Aug. 19th, 2008 08:19 pmBeen a while since I made a music post, hasn't it? Here's seven songs I'm into right now.
One Crowded Hour // Augie March
And if love is a bolt from the blue,
Then what is a bolt but a glorified screw,
And that doesn't hold nothing together.
This was the number one track on Triple J's Hottest 100 last year. It's folksy and breathy and the lyrics shouldn't scan but somehow they do, and it's all wry and lovesick. It's what I use at the moment to kickstart my writing
Dance, Dance, Dance // Lykke Li
So when I trip on my feet, look at the beat,
The words are written in the sand,
When I'm shaking my hips, look for the swing,
The words are written in the air
A song about a girl who can say more with her body than with words. It's peppy and fun and dreamy, and I really like her voice.
Mexico // Jump Little Children
Well I won't let you leave,
I won't let you leave,
Not with all my Django,
Emmy Lou and Steve
I heard this on someone's muxtape, and kept going back to it, because there's something hypnotically whimsical about this break-up song. Maybe it's the thing that sounds like a hurdy-gurdy?
Say it Again // Scribe, featuring Tyra Hammond
Scribe's a NZ rapper, and though I like his stuff, I've got this one in here because of Tyra Hammond, who is Scribe's cousin, and I love her voice. It's really funky and it sounds like they're having an awesome time.
What Else is There // Röyksopp
Road's end getting nearer,
We cover distance but not together,
I am the storm, I am the wonder,
And the flashlight, nightmares,
And sudden explosions
I know Röyksopp as a cheery, frothy, quirky synth-pop duo, mostly because their first album, Melody AM, was kind of perky. This is from their second, and it's much darker and moodier. The vocalist is Karin Dreije, she's amazing on this track, and I know nothing more about her than that. Röyksopp's official site describes her as 'Kate Bush meets Björk'.
Poor Leno // Röyksopp
Poor Leno,
Where you'll be, I'll go,
Where you'll be, I'll know,
Where you'll be, I'll find you
First of all, I can't believe this song actually has lyrics. I've been singing 'Poor Leno, doo dee doo dee doo' for years. Secondly, if you've seen the clip, then you'll know that tundra rocks. This is from their first album, and now that I'm rewatching the clip, it is kind of melancholy. With a beat.
Hospital Beds // Cold War Kids
Put out the fire, boys,
Don't stop, don't stop,
Put out the fire on us,
Bring the buckets by the dozens,
Bring your nieces and your cousins,
Come put out the fire on us
There's a bridge in this one that sounds like a folk song, and I'm sure I've heard it before. I like the song itself, but this bridge is really puzzling me. Wiki says it was used on an ad for Scrubs, but I can't honestly think where I would have heard it, since Scrubs is only on the Comedy Channel here, and I hardly ever watch it. *wracks brain*
