For [livejournal.com profile] ion_bond and for anyone else who has an interest, here's some Faithless, Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead. Pretty much the sound track of the late nineties for me, from the day that [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil came back from her year in Japan with the first Portishead album. (This is why that slow unsteady trip-hop beat always makes me unspeakably happy.)

Insomnia//Faithless
Insomnia, please release me and let me dream of,
Making mad love to my girl on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth.

It's that line about the tights that does it for me.

God is a DJ//Faithless
This is my church,
This is where I heal my hurt,
For tonight,
God is a DJ.

Not the song by Pink - this is as close to a hymn as techno can get.
(OMG, it's playing on the iPod RIGHT NOW as I type in this link. Maxi Jazz wants you to have this music.)

Muhammad Ali//Faithless
Accept these humble words of praise.
And my gratitude for those glorious days
And meritorious ways instilled in a young mind
Skills sublime,
Yours to mine.

Ten-year-old Maxi Jazz, and how he felt seeing someone of his own race portrayed positively on television.

Miss U Less, See U More
I love the way you're so deliberate,
How you light your cigarette,
Head on one side as you pull, you look almost regal.

Yeah. Kind of obsessive, but in a joyous way.

Mass Destruction//Faithless
We need to find courage, overcome
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction

Why Go?//Faithless
Why go? When you can stay awhile,
when you could stay with me, tonight.

Tarantula//Faithless
But I could be a devil to you
I could bite like a tarantula
Right through the skin

I put this one up because it's just plain creepy.

Want some Massive Attack? I know I do!
Inertia Creeps
Protection
Angel

Karmacoma
This last one is Tricky with Massive Attack, in those early trip-hop days when they were all working on each others' stuff. I love this track so much, and am right now singing "Karmacoma, Jamaica and Roma" to myself happily. Later in the nineties, Tricky goes solo and gets a jailbait girlfriend with a killer voice. And, random fact - Tricky was in The Fifth Element, one of the alien assassin dudes.

Extra-bonus Portishead:
Wandering Star
Wandering star,
For whom it is reserved,
The blackness, the darkness, the rhythm.

Glory Box
I'm so tired of playing,
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away,
Leave it to the other girls to play.

You've probably heard it; it's been used a billion times on soundtracks for one thing. But it's lovely, and it's one of my faves.

And a bonus blues cover of Glory Box - very laid back, very cool:
Glory Box//John Martyn

Western Eyes
With western eyes and serpent's breath
We lay our own conscience to rest

All Mine
From that cloud, number nine,
Danger starts the sharp incline

And some Tricky: more edge, less trance.
Black Steel
I got a letter from the government the other day

Hell is Round the Corner
We're hungry, beware of our appetite.
Distant drums bring the news of a kill tonight.
