1.What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
I took a month off work. I had to consider my daily total radiation exposure to [personal profile] lilacsigil. I had acupuncture.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
The fact that I have to go and check my journal for this proves to me that I need to do more of these memes, especially as I get older. (And no, I didn't make any resolutions last year.)

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not close to me. There was a huge number of babies born in town, though. Like, the village is pram-central now.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No family or friends, but this was the year that the deaths of customers started to really hurt, and I made certain realisations about working in healthcare in a small country town. (Which is that I've been here over a decade, and that I'm going to see a lot of people I care about die every year.)

5. What countries did you visit?
None! I went to Philip Island, though. I suppose that counts.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
More self-assurance, and more trust in my decisions.

7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
February-March. There were Geiger counters. [personal profile] lilacsigil had a heart rate in the forties. Let us never visit those times again.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Two big bangs. And surviving my brother's wedding.

9. What was your biggest failure?
My biggest failure? Um… I don't know. I had many failures, but none of them were dramatic enough to be my biggest.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I'm in the middle of an injury now - I've done something dire to my knee, and it's been ongoing for six weeks. There's a lot of body hatred and psych stuff tied up in that, so I'm not talking about it online, but that's my life right now: measured out in spoons and a dot-and-carry pace.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My iPad. I called her 'Uhura' in honour of Trek-tech being real and in my very hands. I love her, and I never want her to go away.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
The medical professionals we dealt with in the February/March period. They were all respectful, kind and capable, far more than we (as queer/fat people) were expecting.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I'm not going to talk about governments or corporations here - they're always appalling and depressing me. Personally, though, appalling is a good word for the way my younger sister has treated her family this year.

14. Where did most of your money go?
In the bank. Into hiring a locum pharmacist for a month, but it was worth it. Some went into my Kiva account - I'm so glad I started one.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Various health related things. Also X-Men: First Class. /shallow

16. What songs will always remind you of 2010?
Rolling in the Deep. Oh, and that Glee Adele mash-up - my only real knowledge of Glee is that one youtube clip. (The blonde one is Brittany! The cute black one is Mercedes! The one with the eyelashes is Santana! Sadly none of them are main characters, and apparently a lot of them get shafted in the show, so I won't be watching.)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? About the same, though the scales swung wildly.
b) thinner or fatter? Fatter.
c) richer or poorer? About the same?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Living in the moment.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying about not living in the moment.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it at home! It was lovely, if a little too hot for me. Just the two of us and cats. Perfect.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
Well, I am in love. But! I developed a huge crush on Sue Perkins, and Lucy Worsely even though she's a bit of a fat-hater. (What was that bullshit about Byron being a massive fatty fat, anyway? Seriously.)

22. How many one-night stands?
None. But I wouldn't have said no to Sue Perkins if she showed up on the doorstep. I'm probably too fat for Lucy Worsley, though.

23. What was your favourite TV program?
Sanctuary. Warehouse 13, The Good Wife. THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF OMG SUE PERKINS STUFF MORE CAKE IN YOUR BEAUTIFUL MOUTH. You too, Mary Berry, you silver-haired meringue-whipping vixen.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Yes, but it's stupid and pointless and probably all in my head.

25. What was the best book you read?
Ooh, I read and liked lots! But the books I bought for my littlest sister were Mira Grant's Newsflesh books. I am really looking forward to the third book coming out.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Florence and the Machine, but now I'm sad because they became more failtastic as the year went on. (Seriously, what was that clip for No Light, No Light? THINK, you guys.)

27. What did you want and get?
Health for my partner. An iPad. /shallow

28. What did you want and not get?
New knees. Not likely to get them, either.

29. What was your favourite film of this year?
X-Men: First Class. Not the best film, not the most fail-free film, but definitely the funnest film.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I hit forty this year (and that's obviously the warranty on my knees gone.) I need to check my LJ to find out what I did… I know I got the iPad. Also I worked. Blah. And I was too messed up in the head to want cake.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying
I can't honestly imagine what that would be or how it would even feel to have it. (Actually, now that I've filled in #33, I can say 'sanity'. Also maybe knees.)

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Professional fat lady stretchy-drapey stuff. Oh, and a sudden, late interest in etsy-made necklaces.

33. What kept you sane?
Ha! My therapist went back to academia. The replacement therapist was no good. My new new therapist scares the ever living daylights out of me. Sanity is a far distant concept. I've just started with a personal trainer, that is looking promising. If my knees hold out.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
SUE PERKINS LUCY WORSELY AND H G WELLS.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
This year was the year I did the most talking about same sex marriage. I've always advocated for equal public health access, but I did a lot of fat-acceptance 101 on this front, too.

36. Who did you miss?
My therapist, omg. Come back, good therapist! You're too good for academia! They don't appreciate you the way I would.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
Sue Perkins is pretty fucking awesome.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011
Bake more, and eat cake on your birthday.

39. Quote song lyrics that sum up your year:
This is a stupid question, I'm not going to answer it. (And if that's not a song, it should be.)
Also, a little song [personal profile] lilacsigil invented, and it goes like this: "If you take a sip of coffee, shut your mouth, shut your mouth!" That's been quite the hit this year in our house.

So, anyway, I'm forty, I can't stay up till midnight. Happy New Year, flist! I'll see you in 2012.

Set this to club music and I can see it becoming a hit!

Sue Perkins is, indeed, awesome.

I hope your new year is filled with improved knees and fewer Geiger counters!

Maybe I should sell it to the UK for 2012 Eurovision?

Honestly, it would be (much!) better than Scooch.

HG Wells <3 I've been watching Warehouse 13 season 1 and the whole "Myka would NEVER kiss Pete" thing starts even then. I love it and wish I'd also received season 2 for Giftmas.

SO TRUE. Oh, how I recognize this.

Also, I have no idea who Sue Perkins is, but now I really want to find out. *googles feverishly*

A very happy New Year to you too!
