[Graffiti on a pink wall in black paint: "If you voted Liberal, I will hunt you down and kill you... I don't know where you live, but I'm very good @ research."]

It was the "I'm very good @ research" that tipped me off.

Not me: if I had the spoons for killing people, I'd just kill 86 people, not 5,274,954.

Oh, god. Did voters in Australia not notice how awful the consequences of "Labour did some bad things, so let's vote for the openly right-wing party instead!" have been in the UK? Or is every Anglophone country contractually obliged at some point to elect its own George W. Bush, and this time it's Australia's turn?

I used to cheer myself up from US politics by thinking that at least places like Australia and the UK were better. Can't do that so much anymore.

See, and as an American, I used to comfort myself with "At least Australia, the UK and Canada aren't electing these wackos."

sigh.

I am very confused by the Liberal party in Australia being very much not liberal. Isn't there a Trade Descriptions Act or something?!?

LOL.

(Although this is what happened in the US. Our liberals have migrated to such a centralist position, that we now have progressives to distinguish "liberals" from liberals.)

Questions re the Palmer Party.

Does anyone know:
Did the PUP have people handing out how-to-votes at every single polling place?
Did Clive Palmer really employ people to hand out how-to-votes? I have heard this but now wonder was it true?
Did he ask employees to do this, and did they feel pressured to engage in political activity at the boss's behest?
Where did all the PUP candidates spring from? Were any of them employees?
Did paying people (if he did) to hand out how-to-votes result in a marked difference at the small (ie probably unstaffed by the bigger parties) booths? (This might show up as a rural vote, since many rural polling places are small.)

And yes, happiness has been difficult this weekend. Small positive point: the NoCarbonTax(etc)Party seem to have got nowhere.

There were two PUPs at Mill Park early voting the other day when I was there. None at Wattle Glen on Saturday.

FWIW, I don't recall a PUP person when I voted. But I was in "head down, earbuds in, sunglasses on" mode, so I could have missed one.

(Unsurprisingly, the LNP volunteers did not include a single woman.)

All the LNP volunteers I saw were women. Very young women, too. I kept wondering where they found so many early 20s women who supported Abbott. All white, too, but that's no surprise at all.

That's frightening.

I must admit I side-eye female Liberal voters quite a lot. Then again, I side-eye Liberal voters full stop. There's been a lot of post-hiding on Facebook this weekend, that's for sure.

That totally baffles me. The LNP volunteer when I was handing out Greens HTVs at Mill Park early polling was white, female, and I would guess in her late thirties to early forties. She had two daughters that she was telling me about: the fourteen-year-old was the 'normal' one (yes, she actually said that) and the twelve-year-old was disabled, although how she was disabled I never found out. She said she was voting Libs because they supported her and her disabled daughter. I can only assume this was on some sort of personal level because I sure as shit can't imagine their policies being particularly kind to anyone with any kind of special needs.

At Wattle Glen, the first LNP volunteer was a guy, maybe late 20s, and I have no idea about his racial background except that he may have been Indian, like the candidate he was supporting (Jag Chugha). He disappeared at 1.30 saying he'd be back in ten minutes and still hadn't come back by the time his replacement rocked up at 3.30 (which I and the ALP volunteer found quite amusing). Said replacement was male, at least fifty, and looked a bit like an evil Santa, so we had a bit of a demographic variation.
