Popping in
May. 6th, 2014 09:07 pmIt's probably pretty clear that I've slipped into one of those non-communicative periods that happen when I'm stressed. House stuff, work stuff, family stuff is all tripping up my tongue right now. I'm still around and reading but finding it hard to get words out.
Missy was put to sleep this afternoon. The last couple of weeks, she had been really well, actually, and had started eating two or three times a day, while we sat with her and patted her and kept the boy cats from bugging her. But we noticed her jaw was not quite meeting anymore. We took her in for a check-up, and an x-ray showed that the bone in her lower jaw had begun to dissolve. She wasn't in pain, but her jaw was only going to get worse, and once the vet had manipulated and examined her, she looked so ragged and unwell that I asked the vet to tell us if it was time to say goodbye. She said that it was.
They were super nice - the nurse took us to a private room, and the vet took Missy away to put a line in. she warned us that she might not be able to get a vein for the catheter to infuse the sedative but luckily she got it first time. Then
lilacsigil held her wrapped in a warm towel, and I cupped her head, and the vet put her to sleep like that. We're going to have her cremated, and scatter her ashes in all of her favourite parts of the garden. Maybe take some to the new house, I don't know.
It's been a long time coming, but I still didn't expect it. Last night, having the usual busywork dreams I've been having lately, a little black kitten popped in, with eyes that changed from blue to gold to green. I know it's rubbish and superstitious thinking, but in my head it I'm letting myself say it was a herald to take her on the way to the next thing. And I hope she's happy and safe and free.

I hope things become gentler for you both.
