Here's some Euro-music that I uploaded to yousendit. It's in m4a format. Some of the best and worst of 2004 and 2005.
I'll post a round-up of the final tomorrow.

1. Eurovision is a history lesson. (Waterloo, by ABBA)

Abba won for Sweden, in 1974, with Waterloo.
Waterloo is the best Eurovision song ever. Every Australian girl my age sang this song in the playground and fought over who got to be the cute blonde girl. (I was weak, and easily defeated, so had to be the brunette. Lives are shaped this way.)

Nothing beats these lyrics:

"My, my, at Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender,
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way,
The history book on the shelf,
Is always repeating itself."

Waterloo, by ABBA

2. Eurovision is fetish-love. (Wild Dances, by Ruslana)

Ruslana won for the Ukraine, in 2004. She's a music ethnologist, who goes into rural areas in the Ukraine, to preserve traditional musical culture. On the night, she performed with a giant whip, and wore very small pieces of fur. She is now a member of parliament.

Wild Dances, by Ruslana

3. Eurovision is incomprehensible. (My Galileo, by Alexandra and Konstantine)

This was the Belorussian entrant for 2004. I have no idea what this song is about, but I really enjoy caroling "My Gal-eeee-lay-oh!" over and over in a high pitched voice. Here are some lyrics:

You're my pier,
Center in my life,
My Galileo,
I rotate to you,
I'm here.

My Galileo, by Alexandra and Konstantine

4. Eurovision is sulky. (Y Así, by Global Kryner)

Austria competed in 2005, with this song. It's a love song, about a girl from Cuba, who comes to Austria, and is shocked to discover that "Austrians dance quite slow." This is no obstacle to love, however, and she falls for a handsome yodeler.

This song failed to get into the finals, and Austria, appalled by Europe's bad taste, is boycotting the competition this year. Hear for yourself, and wonder at Eurovision's loss this year.

D'you know the girl who came from Cuba?
She loves our music and our songs,
She came and she saw,
Austrians dance quite slow.
Y Así, by Global Kryner

5. Eurovision is revolution. (Razom Nas Bahato, by GreenJolly)

This song was the unofficial anthem of the Orange Revolution. The choice for the competition before the change of government was a state-selected artist, but afterwards, the Ukraine had its first popular vote for their representative. GreenJolly were the winners. They didn't win the competition, but it's a great song.

What you wanna say to your daughters and sons?
You know the battle is not over till the battle is won!
Truth be the weapon! We ain’t scared of the guns!
We stay undefeated, 'cause together we’re one!

Razom Nas Bahato, by GreenJolly

6. Eurovision is emo. (Vukovi umiro sami, by Boris Novković)

Vukovi umiro sami, by Boris Novković

The song title translates as "Wolves Die Alone", and it's a tankard-thumping, hug-your-burly-neighbour-and-cry kind of sad song. And it has a good key change, the kind that actually does something in the song.

Ships drift away down the Danube,
You worry no more about me,
I am like leaves carried by the wind,
Wolves die alone.

(Eat that, My Chemical Romance and Dashboard Confessional)

Vukovi umiro sami, by Boris Novković

7. Eurovision is grandmothers. (Boonika Bate Doba by Zdob [shi] Zdub)

Moldova entered the competition for the first time in 2005, mostly because there hasn't been a Moldova for very long, and they had bigger things to sort out than to worry about their Eurovision entry. This is a great song, about a grandmother who plays the drums like whoa:

It's a real magic – big mama play her drum-a,
She's flying into trance like an Indian shaman,
Who's the Beatles? Where from is Peter Pan?
Who's the gypsy Jimmy Hendrix?
She don't care, that Misses L,
I smile, I cry when I see that crazy baba,
Dizzy tempo dizzy, let's go my music mama.
