Music that I've posted to [livejournal.com profile] lunatunes for this week's theme, which is "Songs that tell a story".

Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head//Gorillaz
This creepy fairy tale is partly spoken by Dennis Hopper, with creepy humming and singing in the background from Damon Albarn. I don't know if this is an allegory about the perils of colonisation, or just an eerie story, but the spoken parts are really well paced and have great rhythm.
Then one day strange folk arrived in the town. They came in camouflage, hidden behind dark glasses, and no one noticed them; they only saw shadows. You see, without the truth of the eyes, the happy folk were blind.

Moon Over Bourbon Street//Sting
The story of a creature of the night, from Sting's first solo album, I like this track because the story's not just in the lyrics, it's in the elegant, sinuous music licking around the words.
She walks everyday through the streets of New Orleans,
She's innocent and young from a family of means,
I have stood many times outside her window at night,
To struggle with my instinct in the pale moon light.

Polyester Girl//Regurgitator
A tragic story of plastic love, set to synth-pop sound. This was released in 1997, and I'm still singing "So shiny!" to myself.
Took you for a ride up in an aeroplane,
But your body burst and left an ugly stain,
Had to take your pieces back to the factory,
It took them several weeks to get you back to me,
My polyester girl (so shiny!)

Everything's Turning to White//Kasey Chambers
This is Kasey covering a Paul Kelly song, and it's bleak, sparse storytelling. The song was inspired by a short story about a murder, written by Raymond Carver. The movie, Jindabyne, was inspired by the same story. (It's interesting that in the original, there's no gender reversal - Paul sings from the woman's point of view too.)
It was too hard to tell how long she'd been dead, the river was that close to freezing,
But one thing for sure, the girl hadn't died very well to judge from the bruising,
They stood there above her all thinking the same thoughts at the same time,
There's so much water so close to home.

Every Fucking City//Paul Kelly
Paul Kelly himself this time, singing about love and heartbreak while backpacking around Europe. As you can tell from the title, there's some strong language in this song.
We argued on the channel train to Paris,
The vin rouge helped us make it sweet again,
But by the time that we got down to Lyon,
Everything I said was wrong and you cursed me in the rain.

The Reefer Song//Mindless Drug Hoovers
Let's call this a cautionary tale, because drugs are bad. (There are drug references in this song....) But I like this because it's so damn full of joy.
One sunny day I was riding my bike and smoking a joint 'cause that's what I like,
A policeman stopped and began to stare and he said,
"Hey sonny, what you smokin' there?"

Holy Grail//Hunters and Collectors
I love this song, I love it so much. It's arrogant and exuberant, then it's humble and wry. *sighs happily* It makes me happy to be sharing this song.
All the locals scattered, they were hiding in the snow,
We were so far away from home, so how were we to know,
There'd be nothing left to plunder,
When we stumbled on the holy grail?

The Car Song//The Cat Empire
The Cat Empire fill their songs with sunshine and philosophy. This is Harry's tiny jazzy autobiography, about how he fell into a career in music, and how the more things change, the more they stay the same.
The weekend is the weekend,
And it’s sunny in the park,
I’ll stay here with my beer and fish and chips till it gets dark.
