1. It's still raining! And blustering, and hailing, and hailing SIDEWAYS. So much water here! And it's icy, icy cold, the best kind of winter weather. Spring may be lurking, but winter isn't done just yet. I still have many beanie-wearing days ahead.

2. Knee is still good! I didn't take any NSAIDs at all today, huzzah. I managed my Tuesday swim with only a few quibbles from the knee department, and tomorrow I'll do my first land-based workout since the Saturday before last. Fingers crossed, I can get to my personal trainer on Friday.

3. I finally got off my arse and printed photos from visiting my grandparents and [personal profile] lilacsigil's family. I have one of those tiny Selphy printers, and it's actually really easy to use, but I use it so infrequently that every time is like the first time and I have remind myself how it works. But I'm done, and I've got photos to send to various family members.

4. Had a professional interaction with my dad that was not hideous, and did not cause me emotional suffering. This is noteworthy. And very positive. Something to tell my therapist.

5. I think crochet is my new fandom:

- I'm onto the last skein of yarn for the baby afghan. I think it's going to need some kind of decorative edge, so I ordered some yarn in an autumn brown colour. And I've scoped out this cute little flower hat to put with it - to make a kind of woodlands themed baby gift.

- Moogly has a round up of free Doctor Who crochet patterns. Kudos to the person who made the Ood mask - that is epic.

- I love that people use Pinterest and Ravelry to preserve patterns from the past. There was some spectacular crochet fashion going on in the seventies.

Is it just me, or does she look like Captain Janeway? )

1. I was so pleased with how well my knee was going that I got into the pool via the ladder instead of the ramp. Big mistake - my knee gave a massive agonising spasm on the first rung, and I had to decide whether I'd go up or down. I chose down (SHE CHOSE DOWN? /obligatory Labyrinth moment) because at least if I fell, I'd land softly. Fortunately, I had a physio appointment that very afternoon, and unlike usual appointments, was able to give the phsysio very clear explanations on what kind of movements hurt and didn't hurt. (Adductor/abductor okay. Knee rises and leg curls, very not okay.) She put a lot of needles in. It feels better now.

Also, because I was kind of freaking out (OH GOD I BROKE MY KNEE AGAIN OH GOD) she reminded me that it's okay if it catches sometimes, and that it doesn't mean I've set myself back.

But wow, that was a bad day for the pool to have two heaters out of action - just when I wanted soothing warm water.

2. After talking to [personal profile] mossybomb, I've decided to give watermelon a go in the garden this year. I've bought some Sugarbaby seeds - it's a small melon that does better in cooler climates. I hope it goes well! I hope the possums don't steal them, like they did our pumpkins.

3. I'm nearly through the third skein of four for this baby afghan. I quite like it now, I think. Also, apparently you don't have to block crochet, so that's one thing less to worry about. When I'm done, I'm going to try some more hats. And maybe this scarf: Sushi Roll Scarf. When you roll it up, it looks like sushi!

4. An IRL friend who dropped out of contact six months ago reappeared, to announce that she's sold a YA book. I'm kind of surprised, because I never knew she wrote. I wonder if she's fannish? I WONDER IF SHE'S ON MY FLIST? That would be super weird but cool. (If you are, Mandi, drop me a cryptic hint!) I think I'll ask her if she writes fic. And what her feelings are on the matter. I hope her book does well. I don't know much about it, other than what she's got on the Facebook page: Six Steps Down.

5. Some cool tumblrs I followed recently (I keep meaning to save these for a Follow Friday, but I can't get my act together on an actual Friday):

[tumblr.com profile] scullysface: Scully's face is a good face. And there are so many faces. (face of already forming argumentative counterpoints // face of he’s totally going to ignore every single one of those well-worded warnings i just gave him and do whatever the fuck he wants // face of well this ain’t good)

[tumblr.com profile] truebluemeandyou: Crafty! And crafty recreations of trendy stuff! I like their round-up posts.

[tumblr.com profile] ancientart: Found this one via [tumblr.com profile] maats-asp. Pretty much what it says on the label. I like history. I learned most of mine on the internet.

[tumblr.com profile] heckyeahgrilledcheese: Sometimes I wonder why people make tumblrs of these things, and then I see all the melty, gooey cheese and I understand.

[tumblr.com profile] wtfbadromancecovers: So hideously hilarious. And features a good number of gay romances, too, which is nice, I think? In a backhanded way, it's good to see representation?

[tumblr.com profile] paleoillustration: Is actually on break now. But when it's not, there are awesome paleolithic things, like this buck-toothed elephant thing that eats bark. (Warning for pics of spiders on the first page. Paeleolithic spiders, but still.)

I'm really enjoying tumblr again. It's nice.

1. I woke up and braced myself for the early morning creak and groan of getting my knee going, but it was okay! It was really, really okay - stiff and a bit tender, but no pinching or stabbing. And it got better and better all day, which is fantastic. I was worried, when the tendon flared up on Saturday, that I'd be in for six months of recovery like last time, but maybe not? I've spent the last year and a bit rehabbing that knee, and maybe the payoff is more strength and a faster recovery time?

I'm going to stick to my plan of resting until the pool again on Monday, and then I'll see how it's going for working out on land.

2. Still raining! They've had to shut a few roads to accommodate the creeks overflowing, and they've opened one of the river mouths down on the coast. Lots of water. Not too much water, not yet, though, as predicted, the farmers are starting to complain about the mud.

3. I started posting on Tumblr again! It was really busy at work, so I used my micro breaks to fill up my queue. I'm [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina over there, and I'm mostly posting pretty things I'd like to show to [personal profile] lilacsigil - fandom picspams, history and science trivia. Low stress stuff. Some nature drawings, so if you're phobic about insects or spiders, it might not be for you.

4. Baggins is diligently washing out Chewie's ear. Baggins has a long, aristocratic nose, and Chewie has huge bat ears, so Baggins can get himself in up to the eyes in a spectacularly grotesque way. It's gross and yet I can't look away. It's a bit like a spout going in a funnel. I know it's important for cat society, but I do wonder if I'm going to wake up from a nap one day, and find Baggins making out with my ear canal in the name of uniting us as a family.

5. Man claims to have filmed the rare Australian Night Parrot And DNA confirms elusive night Parrot found

It's pretty exciting when an article gets to use the phrase "holy grail of ornithology". I love it when a species turns out to not be extinct. Not even pining for the fjords.

1. Today started off with staggering, and I really wondered how I was going to get through work, but my pain levels went down and down as the day progressed. I don't know it if was the healing process, or if it was the little short bursts of walking that I do at work (desk to dispensary, dispensary to retail floor, retail floor to desk, rinse and repeat) or that my period finally started and all the inflammatory hormone stuff is easing back, but my knee has ended up okay. I know I'll be sore again tomorrow morning, but I have a bit more hope that I will heal, and I will get back to my former level of activity. (Every time I injure myself, I go through this mental process, but I think this time it's a bit less awful?)

2. I downloaded some episodes of Most Haunted to watch while I crochet - it's a British show like Ghost Hunters International, but I like this one better because they scream and run around more. It's like every stupid seance or haunted house dare you did as a teenager, only with night vision cameras. And their psychic tells a good story, and it's generally good spooky fun. I love it.

3. We watched the Hannibal finale last night. [personal profile] lilacsigil's face! Very DDDD: And now she wants to do a rewatch, so that's awesome. I saw so many things the second time around.

4. This video rolled around my tumblr dash: Radioactive - Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix, I think via [tumblr.com profile] cleolinda? Anyway, beat-boxing cellist. Something awesome I never knew was missing in my life.

5. Speaking of which, A selection of incredible portraits from photographer Charles Fréger’s collection and book Wilder Mann, documenting the ancient pagan rites still being practiced throughout Europe today.

Reminds me of this urban legend (Does it count as an urban legend if there's photographic evidence? Really fucking scary photographic evidence): The Horned Man & The Luna Park Ghost Train Fire. (Trigger warning for IRL accidental death of a child on an amusement park ride.)

Erhmagerd, see you in my dreams.

I'm thinking of starting to use my tumblr again a bit - since instead of turning my screen to show things to [personal profile] lilacsigil, I could just reblog them so they show up on her dash, right? So if I pop up there, that's what's going on.
