Anyway...

MOVING DAY IS SET

I REPEAT, MOVING DAY IS SET

HOLY SHIT OMG WTF THERE'S SO MUCH STUFF WE ONLY HAVE A WEEK THE TENANT MOVES IN AS WE'RE MOVING OUT SO THERE'S NOWHERE TO RUN AWAY TO I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN HANDLE THIS

The cleaners have to come back and clean more - there was just that much dust. But the walls and shelves and windows are good, and I think we can start bringing stuff over from the pantry, the kitchen cupboards, omg help.

There's so much stuff to take to the op shop. There's stuff to take to the tip. There's stuff we're leaving for the Lions. (The Lions Club run a trash and treasure stall in late OCtober.)

Oh, but look at the treasure I found while packing: Dinkum flavour, maaaaaate )

I got yer linkspams. And yer picspams.

- [tumblr.com profile] reign-soundtrack collates all the amazing folk-pop from season one. I am still enjoying this ridiculous show that has no fucks to give for actual historic events. And Adelaide Kane, who plays Mary, is really great. (And an Aussie! Go Aussie!)

- Speaking of Australia (casting spoilers for Arrow) Cut for fair dinkum Australian language )

- Tiny caravan you can pull with a bicycle - it's a tiny dwelling made from two water tanks. (Tiny dwellings are my fantasy right now. Moving will do that for you.)

- 23 Plus-sized bloggers to follow on instagram. I don't do instagram, nor do I particularly do fashion, but these women are amaze and gorgeous.

- How To Cook Quinoa Perfectly Every Time On The Stove Or In A Rice Cooker With Photos. I have a rice cooker. I have a packet of quinoa somewhere in the pantry which I'm sure to come across in the next couple of days as I clean out EVERYTHING.

- Something to covet: Eco-friendly rainbow sea glass jewellery. Pretty glass pebbles inna tube! Definitely something that I'd hang around my neck. (My sister said they look like jelly beans, which is not exactly dissuasive.)

- Recycled jeans journal. This is something I could actually make. I think I'd like to give it a go. WHEN WE HAVE MOVED. AND UNPACKED ALL THE CRAFT ROOM.

- The back of the Sleepy Hollow DVD describes Abbie as 'feisty'. This offends me; it's so infantilising, and it's not true at all. Abbie is measured and deliberate and not feisty. (Who the fuck is feisty, really? Apart from ponies.)

Here, have a picture of Amandla Stenburg. She's in a band. It's adorable. Now I feel bad for saying she is adorable, because isn't that infantilising, too? )

- This just came up on the Miss Fisher facebook page! Ugh photobucket won't let me resize this and I can't be arsed resizing it myself so just glory in the enormous beauty that is Phryne )

- Lastly, one birthday: Happy birthday to [personal profile] kaffy_r, my favourite revolutionary journalist. I hope you have the loveliest of days.

*rushes off to label things for the Lions because the Lions are coming*
st_aurafina: A shiny green chilli (Food: Green Chilli)
Recipe Friday. I made it up.

Something I've cooked recently:
Ricotta pancakes with fig jam.

These were good! Not really a pancake person, but we had these for breakfast on Boxing Day. They were fluffy and thick and not too sweet. You really do need to have two pans going at once, though, for adequate pancake to person supply. We didn't have fig jam, so I used raspberry. (Fig jam! Always cracks me up. Fuck, I'm Good, Just Ask Me!)

Nigella's Sticky Gingerbread

This was the breakout recipe of Christmas 2013 for us. It's so good! So treacly and sticky and tasty and also huge. (You bake it in a roasting dish!) It seems to keep well, too. I'm definitely going to make this again, even if it's not Christmas.

Something I've got concrete plans to cook soon:
Chocolate Pound Cake

With no substitutions, not overbeating, using Australian sized measuring cups for an Australian recipe. Basic cake, you will be defeated. By me. Eating you.

Something I'm idly thinking of cooking in the future:
Orange and ginger glazed pot roast

It's going to be super hot for the next week, so I won't be wanting to put the oven on at all, but after that, I'd like to try this in my cast iron pot. I love pot roast, and it makes such nice leftovers for the rest of the week. And we have a jar of marmalade in the cupboard which needs to be used up. It's lemon, but [personal profile] lilacsigil's dad made it and it will probably be pretty good.

In the garden, we have our first zucchinis! It's very late, because it's been a really cold summer for us. The rest of Australia has been in a massive heat wave, apparently. We've had hot water bottles and long sleeves and gale warnings and mud. Caterpillars are sorted, thank goodness. Peas are advancing. Cucumbers are flowering. Pumpkins are growing like weeks. Tomatoes still green. Lettuce still weird and bitter but I kind of like it. We've got a few hot days up ahead, and I'm hoping it will resuscitate the basil.

Thanks to [personal profile] medie for another great year. I love this fest!
st_aurafina: A black woman in a sheriff's uniform, she looks surprised and amazed (Sleepy Hollow: Abbie)
1. Our summer veggie garden is off and running. In the beds, we've got Roma tomatoes, sweet basil, Black Jack zucchini, cos lettuce, snow peas, string beans, a few self-sown cherry tomatoes from last year, and a mystery tomato that could be Grosse Lisse or Rouge de Marmand or a hybrid. (Apparently they hybridise a lot, according to local garden guru?)

On the seedling trays, there's Green Zebra tomatoes due to go in as soon as we get time, Camp Cherry Joy tomatoes but they're tiny still, Bebe Lebanese cucumber, and very wee watermelons. I'd given up on the melons coming up at all, but as soon as we had a couple of hot days, they sprouted. So cute! Don't know how well they'll go, but it's worth a try.

And in seed envelopes, waiting for space on the seedling trays, there's spinach, rocket, coriander, Genovese basil, and a mix of heirloom pumpkins.

I was feeling like we'd failed a bit, by not having winter veggies this year, but I'm over it now that the beds are filling up with summer crops. I feel a bit organised!

2. Day of the Doctor blew my socks off with geekish glee. I loved it. Cried a lot at the end.

3. We bought a barbecue! Hilariously, it's called a Baby-Q. Cannot stop laughing. Gonna throw something on the Baby Q. Probably not babies. It's a Weber, and it seems, in barbecue culture, that Weber is the Apple device of barbecues - there's a trillion trillion gizmos and add-ons you can get for your Weber. Hence, we've got a trolley and a grill plate for onions, and a cover for the whole set-up, but no gas bottle yet, so we can't cook.

4. I learned a tip! If you cook with cardamom pods, this is going to blow your mind: thread a needle and sew the pods onto a thread. Then, when you're done cooking, you can fish the little bastards out and nobody has to bite down on one. We've got a beef curry slow cooking at the moment, for lunches this week. No cardamom surprises for me.

5. Sleepy Hollow was fantastic tonight! Spoilers )
st_aurafina: A black woman in a sheriff's uniform, she looks surprised and amazed (Sleepy Hollow: Abbie)
1. The talk to the diabetes support group went well. It wasn't the diabetes group, in the end, it was the chronic diseases group, but "We're not called that anymore because it's too negative." Nobody knew what the group is called now, though. Still. It went well, I think? The messages boiled down to "Fish oil is a blood thinner. Those sections on A Current Affair and Today Tonight are actually paid advertisements. Get a Webster Pack; they're full of jelly beans." People seemed happy.

I pushed myself through an educational unit on managing diabetes (since I assumed I was talking to the diabetes group), which involved bracing myself for all kinds of fat-hate, body-shaming, doctor-monster bullshit. But it wasn't too bad, on the whole. The most pervasive thought I came away with was that maybe we should eat more oily fish in this household. Any favourite recipes people would care to share?

This is mine, for tuna patties, which we made yesterday for lunches this week. I've never written this recipe down before - we usually just throw whatever into the mix with the potatoes. But I'm trying to keep a record of things that we make, so that when we come back to them, I can remember what to do.

They're kind of a scratch meal, but nice. )

Give me tuna recipes! We need the oils of the fish.

2. Missy, our elderly cat, started looking poorly on Saturday: fussing with her mouth, off her food and all her fur standing up. [personal profile] lilacsigil took her to the vet yesterday, and she has gingivitis again, with some nasty ulcers at the front of her mouth. (Gingivitis is a complication of her kidney disease.) She's had a shot of antibiotics and a steroid to help with the inflammation, and overnight she's doing a lot better. She lost 200g (relevant when you're a tiny kitty), and the vet suggested that she might have started losing weight last week before she started showing symptoms, so we're going to weigh her weekly. It might give us a chance to get her to the vet earlier, before she loses condition. It's nice to see her perkier and enjoying her dinner so fast though. And now that I think about it, to have only lost 200g at the end of winter is actually a pretty good outcome. We can plump her up again through this summer.

3. Operation Walk the Cat proceeds apace.

Open the door, get on the floor /embarrassing eighties reference )

He really enjoys the walks, but rather than burning off energy, he has the idea at the moment that we'll let him outside at any moment. He gets really excited whenever [personal profile] lilacsigil goes near the place where his harness is kept. I'm hoping he settles down. I don't think I can handle him strutting around the house bellowing at full volume. For hours.

4. The Great British Bake-Off! Buns! Cut for spoilers? Sandwich or toast? )

5. Sleepy Hollow was awesome! This show isn't perfect, but at the same time, it just gallops on and on without looking back, and I have a certain amount of respect for that kind of story telling.

This entry is all spoiler cuts. Oh, and some icons. )
