I have survived dental things, and eaten sausage rolls as a reward. I feel pretty good about that.
I ditched my regular dentist - the practice changed hands, and while the dentist was fine, the clinic manager/main receptionist was ghastly, she messed up appointments, was weird about my phobia when nobody else was bothered (like she'd never seen anyone with a dental phobia before), and did that thing where she dressed down other staff in front of patients, omg so unprofessional.
The new dental clinic is great on all fronts except that they don't automatically use a lead apron when taking x-rays, which kind of disturbed me. They were fine to give me one when I asked, but I wouldn't have thought it was an option these days.
Otherwise they were great - I went in with
lilacsigil just to talk with them about dental phobia and the clinic manager was very calm. She knew about dental phobias, she offered me options like sedation or gas (neither of which I actually need if I have understanding people), she knew which dentist I'd be best off with, she was able to book us consecutive appointments (I have no idea why this was a problem at our old dentist, but the clinic manager there could not get her head around it.) The dentist was very gentle, and unfazed by me crying and trembling in the chair. The nurses have all been calm and kind. Nobody seems bothered, which is the easiest way for me. My gums are not too traumatised by the filling I had, and the dentist decided I only needed one, not the two that she had originally thought, so that's even better. Now I just need a crown on my back molar, which I have apparently cracked vertically. Through tooth grinding, presumably. That's not going to be awesome fun but now that I know them better, I think I can get through it.
The renovations drag on. Oh, but look! We had shelves built for the library:
Apologies to the people who've seen them on Facebook already.

The left side of the shelf is stepped, so that the cats can easily get to the top and run around. The bookshelf guy was a bit O.O when we explained to him in gestures and pictures from the internet but then he really got excited about the design. We're planning on getting him to build us a lift-top coffee table so we can keep the laptops inside. (Something like this but with wooden legs)
You can also see some of the 65 boxes of books. Not including comics. Which
lilacsigil has toted on our little trolley over a period of months because of my flop-knee. It's definitely the most epic part of the move.
So, Outlander the series - yes/no? Is it good? I was never into the books, but I was hugely into the Lord John Grey books, so I kept picking up Outlander and putting it down again. I'm pretty sure that John isn't going to be in this, but the gifs look pretty on Tumblr. I feel like the Outlander books (like Game of Thrones) is a source that a TV treatment will work really well for. (In the sense that to me, they needed a big edit.) Also, somewhat cruelly, I am hoping that there will be a great wash of fanfic, just because of the way that Diana Gabaldon shot her mouth off about it. And because it was fanfic that brought me to her books. (If anyone is interested, it was this POTC crossover by
penknife: Trade - NC-17, Captain Jack/Lord John Grey.)
I watched the leaked pilot of Constantine, and I've got mixed feelings on that. Mixed feelings and some paranoia -
I'm super enraged about them straightwashing the character, and the stupid things the showrunner has said about why they've made a canon bisexual character straight. (There's an interview here: Constantine Will Not Be Bisexual on the NBC Show, if you haven't got enough rage blackout in your life.)
If it was a deliberate leak to gauge response, then I'm kind of disappointed that the network's response to people saying that the female lead had nothing to do was to write her out. Not, you know, give her some plot. On the other hand, they're writing Zed in, and I like Zed.
I liked Matt Ryan as John Constantine well enough - he was detached and a bit heartless in the right way. He wasn't American - that helped a lot, too. He had the right bedraggled, tired of life expression. I had more feelings about Chas, though Chas had fewer lines and less presence. Best of all was Harold Perrineau as the angel - not sure if we got his angel name? Imdb has him listed as 'Manny'. He was fantastic - leapt right out of the screen.
Okay, no, the best thing of all was all the snotty comments on Tumblr about how they'd ripped Constantine's look from Castiel on Supernatural. Oh, you sweet summer tumblrinas! Bless.
I think I'm done with cuts for now.

Nup. Nope. Can't make me read that. Nyah. *sits on hands to avoid clicking*
I've been hanging onto your copy of Rosemary Edghill's Bell, Book, and Murder. Do you want me to drop it in the post, now you have bookshelves to put it on, or keep hanging on until you're ready for visitors?

Date: 2014-08-14 06:27 am (UTC)If it's not stressing you out, can you hang onto the book for a bit longer? There is dust. Everything that's not in a box is dusty. It's a bit of a nightmare.
Oh, but hey, until we're ready for visitors? YAAAAY! Soon.

Kheldar would love those shelves. Shadow would be torn between the camouflage opportunities for a chocolate brown cat and the requirement to actually move off his cushion to get to them.
I am glad that you have found an understanding new dental practice. My current practice isn't so much understanding as accommodating, which works okay for me since all I really need is for

Date: 2014-08-13 02:50 pm (UTC)I'm not a fan of the Outlander books at all, but I actually liked the first episode of the show. I have no idea if I'll like the rest, because I kind of doubt they're going to change the things about the books that I found so icky, and it seems to have a very leisurely pacing. But it is indeed very pretty and full of misty Scottish vistas, and the actress playing the main character is great.

Date: 2014-08-14 06:39 am (UTC)There was a vast difference between the writing in the John Grey novels and in Outlander - there were so many ick things in Outlander. But I think I'd like misty Scottish vistas, and a chance to see where the books are set, at least.

Date: 2014-08-13 04:08 pm (UTC)Presumably all other patients of all ages bound into that dentist's office brimming with happiness and joy. Which would explain the receptionist's reaction.

Date: 2014-08-13 11:26 pm (UTC)I read the first few Outlander books back when they came out. I liked Outlander a lot; and loved Dragonfly in Amber. I got increasingly indifferent about the others so stopped reading-doesn't mean they're bad, per se, just didn't hold my interest as much.
The main problem in turning them into a tv show is that there's some graphic, detailed sexual violence in the first one; and references to it, after. The usual period violence, bodice ripping and whatnot is pale next to this particular episode, imo, and I doubt they'll put it into the show. But I bet it'll sure surprise people who go read the books when they find out it's a series.
I don't watch Constantine, but I'm disappointed to hear about them making a bisexual character straight. I don't often see bisexual characters in tv shows or movies, and not often in books.

Your bookshelves give me the envies. Beautiful! *moves in when neither of you are looking*
Re: Constantine. I have to see where I can get this show to see if it's any good (I am rather fond of the comic) but wow they would rather rob him of all sex life to avoid suggesting he might not be opposed to ladies and dudes both. Wow.

Date: 2014-08-22 11:22 am (UTC)Kind of the opposite, I thought? Maybe it's just that
I am wavering on Constantine, because despite behind the scenes stupidity with the creators, it looked great, and the angel was A-MAZING. I'm a sucker for angels.

Date: 2014-08-14 05:27 pm (UTC)I have icky associations with the Outlander series (bad/PTSD-inducing time of life when I read the first few), and there are just...I mean, are those scenes really necessary? Really? And the sexism? ALL the sexism? Anyway, so I plan not to watch, as you could probably say.

Date: 2014-08-22 11:33 am (UTC)Yeah, Outlander is pretty gross in that sense - I could never actually read them, so much as skimming through to get the details on Lord John Grey so I could enjoy his series which was much less gross. (Turns out that you don't need to - I had a fandom friend give me a run down of his background which worked just as well.)

Yep, apparently you can only have sexy bisexual women characters on TV - bisexual men are just a bit too gay. Or something. Blah.

how they'd ripped Constantine's look from Castiel on Supernatural
