I'm meming! I'm meming!
Apr. 26th, 2017 05:27 pmI'm still trying to catch up on posting fic to my Dreamwidth. As I go, I'm trying to post to a comm or two as well, because that's where DW falls down a bit, I think - there aren't as many active comms as there were on LJ. Some really, really active ones! But not as many.
Speaking of which, is there a place I could post my Black Tapes genfic? A general fandom genfic comm? I couldn't find a specific Black Tapes comm, but in searching, I did find that there's an option for DW to add that topic to your interests. (Which is awesome.) And then through that, I found
addme_fandom, which is like
addme, but fannish.
Meme with me? (as seen everywhere, probably because it's a good meme!)
Ask me:
1. the character I least understand
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
3. the character who scares me the most
4. the character who is mostly like me
5. hottest looks character
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
7. one thing I like about my hated character
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
10. my ship that never sailed
Also, from
yohijideranged, a music meme!
1. A song you like with a colour in the title.
I have three, because how do you choose these things?
White Winter Hymnal, originally by Fleet Foxes, here by Birdy. I love this because it's creepy and lovesick and Birdie's voice makes it creepier and more lovesick.
Yellow Flicker Beat, by Lorde. I have written so much MCU Natasha fic to this.
Blackstar, David Bowie. Because it's such a Bowie song. (Which seems like a weird thing to say? But it really is - it's many songs and genres squished into one bundle of gorgeous weirdness.)
Youtube, why do you do that massive gap thing with your embeds? Why?
The rest of the topics:

Date: 2017-04-26 08:48 am (UTC)And for the meme, how about Doctor Who? (If you need to divide it up for workability, then Classic Who, please!)
no subject
Date: 2017-04-26 11:10 am (UTC)Okay, Classic Who...
1. the character I least understand
Oh, god, the Kandy Man. I get the whole Thatcher analogy, but what the hell. And I like Happiness Patrol over all, but wow.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
Seven and Ace. And the whole Ace going to the Prydonian Academy subplot they were leading up to. Ace would have made a great Timelord.
3. the character who scares me the most
Ooh, that's actually hard. There are lots of aliens that scared me - I was terrified of the Krynoid. And any of the times that people got weird skin make-up on, like in Ark in Space. Actually, the Wirrn were pretty damn scary, too. So many scary aliens.
No, wait, I thought of someone - Davros. Davros has scared me on a lot of levels as I've grown up. Straight up fear as a kid, representative fear as an adult.
4. the character who is mostly like me
I dunno? Maybe Nyssa? I like science and getting explanations for things. But I don't think I'd go work in a leper colony.
Actually, if I can make a break to Nu WHo? I've always thought of myself and
5. hottest looks character
A toss-up between the two Romanas and Liz Shaw. And Leela.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
Ace? Nope, can't think of anything, she's too perfect. Oh, wait, that whole thing with her supposedly losing her virginity to Sabalom Glitz? That was super gross.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
The Valeyard had a great costume. And he started well.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
Those silent credits over Adric's broken badge.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
Not sure if I can put the Valeyard here or not...
10. my ship that never sailed
Tegan/Nyssa. I like to think it was closer than we could see. Also, Leela/Romana, so perfect, should have been a thing.

Date: 2017-04-26 11:55 am (UTC)A tie between Lattimer and the Italian.
Lattimer's storyline was so overcomplicated, I can't even really remember what the whole deal was. And the Italian - she would have been much better off interacting with Sophie. It was just weird and sleazy with Nate.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
All of the team all of the time! All the little side-glances going on behind the main dialogue, and the in-jokes that carried right through the whole show. It's a very distinctive [whatever]. The FBI agents. Spencer's culinary yearnings.
3. the character who scares me the most
Victor Dubenich turned out to have a pretty unexpected malevolence, I have to say.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Hardison. Especially early-series Hardison, before he learned to fight and be cool about getting dangled off ropes.
5. hottest looks character
Oh, jeez, what a choice. Sophie. She's the best and most glam, even when she's disheveled.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
Who is my favourite character, though? I can't choose between Parker and Hardison.
Okay, I hated the episode where Hardison played the violin - it was embarrassment squick central for me.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
I hate HATE hate Nate's dad. I hate Nate's dad. One thing I liked about Nate's dad is that he died. (I feel bad, because I don't hate Tom Skerritt particularly, but I hate how his character brought out all the worst parts of Nate.)
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
In The Long Way Down Job, when Parker and Spencer fall down the crevasse, find the dead body, and shit gets real. You can just see it change from a fun romp for Parker to something really sad.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
Can I vote for Nate's dad dying twice? No? Then, Archie Leach for not stepping up and giving baby!Parker a home.
10. my ship that never sailed
I'm of the camp that feels Hardison/Parker/Spencer is canon. And I'm not sure that Tara/Sophie didn't sail? So I'm going to say Maggie/Sophie. I think an AU where Maggie's the one who kicks the Leverage team into action right at the start would have been very cool.

Date: 2017-04-26 12:26 pm (UTC)1. the character I least understand
Terrence Wexford - I can't figure out how a person who makes all the wrong decisions got so high up in the Sanctuary network.
Or Gregory Magnus - what the heck was going on there?
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
The Five, both in flashback and in the current time. They bickered and sniped at each other constantly, but they were so close.
3. the character who scares me the most
The Cabal doctor who talked to Ashley in the tank while doing all that medical stuff to her. She was creepy as hell.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Henry, I guess? No, actually, I'm probably most like Abby - klutzy, never quite fitting in, but desperately wanting to. Poor Abby.
5. hottest looks character
Helen Magnus, absolutely.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
Ohh, that's hard. Um, Helen could be frustratingly bad at asking for help. And there was a certain insular cultishness to the Sanctuary network - see how hard it was for Abby to break into the clique.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
Adam Worth, I hate him. Hated his storyline (though I loved Imogen and wrote a fic about her.) Okay, he really did love his daughter. He was evil before he had a daughter, and we never knew much about his presumed wife, but he did love Imogen very much.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
I can't get my copy of Normandy to load, but it's the interrogation scene, where John accuses Helen of jealousy, and she says something like, "Jealous? Of whom?" It sums up the John/James/Helen relationship perfectly for me.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
Dana Witcomb, the head of the Cabal.
10. my ship that never sailed
Helen/Kate. I can see that much more than Helen/Will, to be honest. Kate's worldly enough to give Helen a run for her money and not so dependent on approval as Will.
Oh, I miss this show so much! Thank you for making me get all nostalgic.

Date: 2017-04-27 05:27 am (UTC)Mrs Butler! She is full of secrets.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
Okay, I love the banter between Phryne and Jack - it's the the pivot point of the whole series, but for this, I have to say Mac. Mostly Mac with Phryne. She's droll and precise and unflinching and queer, and she just gets this slightly arch look on her face when Phryne is doing her best Phryne, and I love it.
3. the character who scares me the most
Those nuns in the laundry for bad girls, and what that whole culture represents in terms of abuse in the church. There was an undercurrent of horror there completely outside the light-hearted Miss Fisher tone.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Definitely Aunt Prudence in stature, but I aspire to be the pharmacist version of Mac. And Dottie is my bake-spiration. I would love to control the outcome of a church fete with the strength of my nut loaf.
5. hottest looks character
Oh, they're all pretty damn gorgeous, let's be real. I like Mac's stylings best of all, at least on a personal level, and I've had a crush on Tammy McIntosh since Police Rescue. Phryne is a work of art, of course. Jack is all handsome and competence on legs, and I love that.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
I definitely dislike that Mac wasn't in every episode. Even more, I dislike that Mac's love interest had to die. Because all lesbians must die, apparently.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
I'm trying to think of who my hated character is. Murdock Foyle was a creeper, but he was a fairly pedestrian creeper as far as serial killers go, and I have a special hate for the 'clever psycho plays mind games from inside his jail cell' trope.
The sleazebag in Murder in Montparnasse, who took advantage of poor traumatised ambulance-driver Phryne - at least he gave us the opportunity to know more about this part of Phryne's life, and to a lesser degree, Jack's time in the war.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
Every time we got a tiny, tiny glimpse of how shattered Jack was when he came back from the war. There wasn't much, but enough to see that his world view had changed considerably.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
Did Murdock Foyle die, in the end? He should have.
10. my ship that never sailed
Mac/Phryne, of course! I have no doubts that this ship has sailed, docked, and still goes out for daytrips occasionally. There is no way that free-spirited, open-minded, sexually adventurous Phryne hasn't messed around with her best friend.

Date: 2017-04-27 07:19 am (UTC)Ultron, seriously. Either he's an emotionless AI bent on eradicating humans or he's a chatty Tony-clone who just wants to be loved and accepted by his team. You can't have it both ways.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
Everyone's idle chatter as they do dangerous things. Steve and Natasha chatting away at the open hatch of the plane like they're regular cubicle monkeys. Tony and Rhodey talking on the phone while Tony is dodging planes. That kind of casual competence gives me a buzz.
3. the character who scares me the most
Obadiah Stane is pretty scary, especially when you think of that mind watching Tony grow up. The level of entitlement and possession he obviously feels about Tony gives me shudders.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Hey, I just saw the typo in this line - I've done what? Four of these?
I don't think there is a character I am most like in this universe. WAIT. That tech that Danny Pudi plays in Winter Soldier, who lets Cap and his peeps onto the helicarrier. That's me.
5. hottest looks character
Natasha. Steve. Sam. Jeri Hogarth in a totally D/s way.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
I think I'd have to say Natasha is my fave. I was not a fan of Bruce/Natasha, and I was very unhappy with the sterilisation-as-motivation storyline. Screw that, Joss Whedon.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
Ultron was mind-breakingly dull and annoying, but he did have good banter. I wish the banter had been more of a character note and less of a audience-approval-generator, because then he'd have made a decent villain.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
"It's really not that complicated. I've got red in my ledger, I'd like to wipe it out."
I love that whole scene, actually. I could have done without 'mewling quim', though I do think it's in character. Loki would totally say that.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
A ha ha, Arnim Zola. See, you think he's dead, but for sure he's hanging out in one of the seedier sub-reddits, stirring shit up for lolz.
10. my ship that never sailed
Just one? There are so many femslash ships in the MCU. Maria Hill/Natasha or Pepper, Natasha/Wanda, Wanda/Sharon, Natasha/any of the AoS ladies, Claire/any of the Avengers ladies. Jeri Hogarth/any of the TV series ladies. Sharon Carter/Daisy, Jemma/Bobbi, Melinda May/any of the AoS women.
I feel like Bruce/Tony is already a thing, so I won't nominate that. I firmly believe in wildly bisexual Tony.
Clint/various ladies that would beat up on him a bit. Or a lot, I'm not fussy.
All the permutations of Steve/Bucky: +Sam, +Natasha, +Tony, +Pepper. Bucky needs a cuddle pile, IJS.

Date: 2017-04-28 02:49 am (UTC)1. the character I least understand
It's definitely Greer. I never understood what he got out of the deal with Samaritan - it initially looked like a power play, but then it warped into a kind of nihilistic spiral where he wanted to give the world over to a scary god. Imagine Samaritan with tentacles, and it starts to look very Lovecraftian. I wish they'd clarified his purpose better - I could have had a nice hate ship with Finch. But then he literally expositioned all the oxygen out of the room and we never knew.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
The Root/Shaw low-level flirtation, especially when it was going on in the background behind other dialogue. Like, when Root steals Shaw's soda, and she snatches it back, then grumpily wipes the straw on her sleeve.
I may have watched it a lot of times.
3. the character who scares me the most
Samaritan was pretty scary - I would have liked to have seen more about how it interacted with its people, and whether it developed a personality like the Machine. When we heard it speak in that S5 ep, it was very spooky and flat. I wanted more of that kind of thing. (I'm weeping for the very obvious season arcs we never got to see.)
4. the character who is mostly like me
Fusco. I'm someone who wants to get stuff done, while doing the minimal amount of harm.
5. hottest looks character
Oh, but they're all gorgeous. I mean, how to choose? I follow Sarah Shahi's instagram because she posts lots of workout pics. I love Shaw's efficiency and power of movement. Root is delightfully balletic and has very pretty hair. Harold's microexpressions are an artform. Carter is a goddess. Control is hot as fuck. I mean, seriously, this is a beautiful, beautiful cast.
I did not expect to like John Reese as much as I did. Jim Caviezel was who kept me from trying the show in the first place, because his politics made me expect another NO HOMO type show, and I didn't have time for that shit. But kudos to him for making me adore a character I firmly didn't want to.
Also he is a really beautiful, beautiful man. Like, sculpturally beautiful, if you know what I mean.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
I can't decide who my favourite character is! Um.
Root: I didn't like that she killed Martine with basically no consequences. I understand that she's fundamentally amoral, but the Machine rehabilitated her. I would have liked to see some kickback from that decision.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
You know who I hate? MR FUCKING DILLINGER. Poor Harold. Poor, hurting Harold.
Let's find one thing I like about Mr Fucking Dillinger. He made for a damn good storyline with lots of juicy flashback information. (I've been watching this episode a lot for my Sentinel/Guide AU, because I'm fairly sure that's the first time Harold sees John in person.)
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
So many to choose from...
Harold: "I know absolutely everything about you, Mr Reese."
Shaw: One of the things I left out of my file: I kind of enjoy this sort of thing.
Root: I am so glad you said that. I do too
(I think I know this ep off by heart by now!)
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
This show was kind of a massacre, to be honest. I'm working hard to think of someone who didn't die, who I wasn't fond of.
...still thinking.
Senator Garrison. Should have died. Did presumably die in that Root AU vision.
10. my ship that never sailed
MY SHIP SAILED!! !!! But then it sank. *sobs*
I have been writing a bit of post-finale Iris/Shaw and finding that it actually works really well. Iris is so stabilising and calm, while Shaw freaks out about having emotions a lot.

Date: 2017-04-28 06:50 am (UTC)1. the character I least understand
Apocalypse was a mystery to me, until the movie, where it became clear that what he wanted was to torture and sex up Charles.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
Movieverse: the Scott/Logan snark. The Scott/Logan snark while Jean watches.
3. the character who scares me the most
[spoilery character] whose name will spoil you if you intend to watch Legion. Which everyone should, btw. Didn't scare me in the comics. Scared the crap out of me in this show.
4. the character who is mostly like me
... comicsverse Moira? Into science, drinks coffee like a hippo with a cleft palate. I never won a Nobel prize, though.
5. hottest looks character
I am v partial to Emma Frost, in any iteration except that TV series, what was it? Generation X? It was dreadful.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
Emma Frost? She gets shafted so often in storylines. Why do so few see the awesome that is Emma Frost? Or how well she fits in a Scott/Jean/Emma triangle? Why?
7. one thing I like about my hated character
Sabretooth? Ummm. Sometimes he can be kinda funny? In comics, anyway. Oh, no, wait, I know who I hate. Daken. I hate Daken.
He's very, very, very bi, though. Go canon queer characters!
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
Oh, man, there are literally too many. Um. That after scene in X-Men II when we saw the Phoenix in the water - I remember people online wondering what it meant, and I was so excited.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
Did movieverse Sabretooth die? If not, I pick him. There's no point in choosing a comicsverse character because comics. They'll be dead next week.
10. my ship that never sailed
Either of my OT3s: Logan/Jean/Scott, Emma/Jean/Scott. It's weird to me that I don't really ship Scott/Jean as is, but I don't. They're both these complex and slightly twisted people who need a third person to bounce off.

Date: 2017-04-29 02:07 am (UTC)1. the character I least understand
Anaander Miaanai but that's probably the case for Anaander too. Also, we know why she had to stop making ancillaries, but why did she then stop expansion and conquest? She had plenty of non-ancillary humans to work with, and a contracting empire is a dying empire.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
Breq as Fleet Captain with Mercy of Kalr's faux-Ancillary crew, in that she constantly had two levels of interaction going on, one of her own single-bodied observation, and also what Ship let her see.
3. the character who scares me the most
Fosyf Denche, who really, really didn't care what horrible things her daughter got up to as long as she obeyed the rules of hierarchy. She only disowned Raughd because she got caught in a plot against Breq, not because of her actual murder attempt.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Basnaaid. From a family who strongly believes in education, deeply enraged by incompetence and failure by superiors, very bad at accepting apologies about anything major (though completely fine on a normal social level).
5. hottest looks character
Violet-eyed Tisarwat is so hot and she knows it. (Actually she reminds me of when my mum stopped buying my clothes and it was finally all-black all the time woo!)
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
Breq is a steamroller and while she expects no-one to be on her side, once somebody is, they have to fall in line with Breq or get steamrolled. This is starting to change with her looking after Seivarden, but she was deeply surprised and hurt and had to recalibrate over Basnaaid and Uran's rejections.
Also, Breq is a living example of the thing I find creepiest about this universe, which is that the high-tech lifestyle off-planet, whether on a station or a ship, comes with 100% observation. You have to make a choice between poverty and panopticon and this is 100% normal for Breq.
7. one thing I like about my hated character
Anaander Miaanai is able to grow and change - at least some of the time. Unfortunately for everyone this means warfare between apparently identical factions, but but the end of Ancillary Mercy everyone seemed to be working out that they should just keep doing what was right (in their opinion) and ignore orders.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
The death of Awn Elming and the way Anaander's own planning that Awn disrupted was the key to Breq's escape. I was sure that she wasn't going to be able to save Awn, but I didn't expect that Justice of Toren would be the one that had to execute her.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
I don't really wish death on anyone. But if Raughd went far, far away and lived on just her basic citizen's allowance of skel and plain clothing someone where she had no power or influence, that would be great.
10. my ship that never sailed
I wish Justice of Toren had got to sail on, singing all the way.

Date: 2017-04-30 07:42 pm (UTC)I hadn't heard either the Birdy or Lorde songs before, and they were both really good. I confess I didn't listen to Blackstar again because it still makes me sad!

Date: 2017-05-04 03:06 am (UTC)1. the character I least understand
Dukat in the later part of the series, when he was getting his face changed to Bajoran and so on. I love Marc Alaimo but they could have written better stuff to keep him on the show.
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
I think this is the only Trek show in the franchise where I enjoyed the holodeck episodes. Except for Vic Fontaine. Fuck, I hate that guy.
3. the character who scares me the most
Kai Winn, without a doubt. Religious fanatics, especially covertly manipulative ones, terrify me. In this world, let alone in space.
4. the character who is mostly like me
Nog, I think. I want to do good, and I try to do good, but I have a lot of trouble believing in myself.
5. hottest looks character
It's a tie between Jadzia and Kira Nerys. They are amazing.
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
I dunno who my favourite character is, tbh.
For Kira: Sometimes they let her stubborness stand in for plot, and I think Kira is smarter than that. (Also, in the novels, she became a Vedek, and I really don't think she'd go for that kind of position.)
For Jadzia: come on, she could totally have defended against that pah wraith. If you're going to kill her, let her go out with competence and ferocity.
So I guess what I hate about my favourite characters is actually bad writing on behalf of my favourite characters. That's probably cheating but I don't care!
7. one thing I like about my hated character
At least he was only a holosuite character. Oh, and that episode with Nog dealing with his ptsd, where he stayed with Vic and we got to see back-of-shop stuff with his club - that was a really good episode, actually.
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
It doesn't so much haunt me, but it's really memorable:
When the bathroom door opens, and you find that Kira and Odo have been sitting in there talking quietly. It's a really understated scene but it has such intimacy and obvious love between them, and I think because it's a universal thing that happens at parties now, it really sold me on their relationship. It was much more respectful and believable than if the door had opened on them making out, you know? Such a character moment for both of them.
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
I know it doesn't count, but I wish Dukat had died earlier, to be honest. I don't think 7th season Dukat was an effective adversary at all.
10. my ship that never sailed
Any actual queer relationships? I think this is the point where the actors and writers were pushing hard against producers and studios for actual gay relationships, and they did the best they could with what they were allowed to show - like, how much physical contact Bashir and Garak had, sneaking ladies into Intendant Kira's harem, playing around with same-sex attraction in the Trill.
