st_aurafina: a white bowl of peas, one single pea on the counter beside it (Food: Give peas a chance)
Wow, two posts in two weeks? It's almost too much!

Work is busy, mostly due to tourists who can't go overseas for holidays. It's okay. I haven't murdered anyone. Yet.

[profile] lilacigil and I have been making strata with our leftover bread, thanks partly to [personal profile] kass mentioning it, and also to seeing Sohla El Waylly make it on [youtube.com profile] Food52 . One of the positive things that came out of the Bon Appetit collapse was getting more Sohla content. She's great. Also strata is great - it's like a savoury bread pudding that you can put all kinds of things in. A really good way to clean the veggie crisper drawer in the fridge. We're doing ours with broccoli, frozen peas, mushrooms and spinach. And a mix of feta and shredded mozzarella.

Nathan Evans Wellerman Family Tree — shantytok mashup/supercut
This is my favourite supercut, because it has dancing. Also, because non-Aussies might not know, the ship's name, the Billy of Tea, is referring to a metal bucket you make your tea in. You hang it over the campfire, when it's boiling, you chuck in your tea leaves, and when it's steeped you swing it in a circle to settle the leaves. Thus: Swinging the billy to settle the leaf tea

[community profile] flash_fiction - a new community for drabbles/double drabbles/triple drabbles and flash-fic under 300 words. Weekly prompts here.

[community profile] fan_flashworks - I should also point out this, which is an all-fandoms multi-media flashworks community. I always mean to write for the monthly prompt but somehow never manage to do so.

[tumblr.com profile] starspangledbigbang - a tumblr-run big bang for Team Cap characters of the MCU (linked because I have a Bucky fic I wrote for NaNo in 2014 that I really, really need to finish and post.)

st_aurafina: Close up of Shaw from POI (POI: Shaw close up)
I was going to make a post about how I've been quiet because life has been a bit garbage, but this morning I woke up and things were a little bit okay?

Cutting the bad stuff: illness, work issues, death in the community )

While this was going on, I somehow managed to churn out 1000 words a day for Camp Nano in April, and finish one of my big WIPs, clocking in at 80k. I'm editing that now, and I hope I can start posting soon. I finished my gift fic for the Person of Interest exchange and I'm tooling around with some treats now. (Weirdly, while we were in hospital I had this urge to go back and re-read my Twin Peaks/X-Files crossover, and I've only just now realised that I wrote that the last time there was major health stuff going on. Maybe I write more when I'm stressed? IDK I can live with writing less, if that's the case.)

Also, the whales have started appearing to scope out the whale nurseries along the coast, and that is always reassuring, when you are feeling overwhelmed by the imminent collapse of the world.

I guess my theme is unexpected crossovers that work really well?

For King and Country by [archiveofourown.org profile] killalla (Harold Finch/John Reese, Teen)
The crossover here is Person of Interest/Lord Darcy Series - Randall Grant. As far as I can tell (and I'm sure someone on my flist will know more) the Lord Darcy Mysteries is an contemporary alternate history where the Plantagenets survive and also there is magic? I don't know more than that, and this fic works, because it's all iddy hand kissing and fealty swearing and THAT IS GOOD YES.

of course it's beastly when anybody dies by [archiveofourown.org profile] suitablyskippy, (Gwendoline Lacey, general)
The crossover here is Malory Towers/Death Note, where Darling Gwendoline finds the notebook. This is dark and messed up, and Gwendoline is exactly as awful as you'd expect with the power of life and death in her hands.
st_aurafina: A ceramic head marked with phrenology detail (Brain: Phrenology)
I am weaning off escitalopram because I can't handle the flattening thing anymore. It's mashed my ability to initiate actions. For example, at the moment I'm getting up at 6:30am so I can make it to work by 9am. (I live less than five minutes drive from work.) I'm arriving at work without having done all the anxiety self-care things I need to do like meditate and go for a little walk in the garden. All I can get done is the basics: wash, put on clothes, take meds, eat breakfast. And even then, I'm arriving while I'm still chewing the last of my cereal. It's a mess.

I haven't written in a month. All I do is play Subnautica and crochet and hug kitties. That's not such a bad existence, but still. At least it's not too hot this week.

Also, [personal profile] lilacsigil saw a white-bellied sea eagle today (I was looking the wrong way, damn it!) which kind of gives me hope, in this environmentapalooza. (They're a recovering species. Something is going right. One thing, anyway.)

I'm sorry, person who linked this, I didn't note down your name in my haste to play this iteration of the game. I do not have a PhD and only spent a year in academia but I still find this process hilarious: coffee -> panini -> idea -> code -> etc. Sometimes you get garbage! - This internet rabbit hole I fell down, starting with an ASL version of Ariana Grande's Seven Rings by an EXTREMELY attractive man in a mesh shirt. I'm cutting this because it got a bit scatty )

Podcasts I'm enjoying:
- Ologies with Alie Ward, which is a podcast about sciences.
I'd recommend Egyptology with Kara Cooney, and Testudinology with Amanda Hipps.

- David Tennant Does a Podcast, which is basically what it says on the bottle. I listened to the first one with Olivia Colman and it was delightful. (He calls her 'Collie' and she calls him 'DT'.) The next one is Whoopi Goldberg.

- Monster S2: The Zodiac Killer - the first season, when they covered the Atlanta Monster was really intense and confronting, and I bailed on it. Zodiac has a little distance, maybe because of the hype? A lot of the story is the hype itself, and that is really interesting to me, as well as this peek into the way police departments had to learn on the fly how to deal with this kind of killer.

- Shelf Life, from the Newberry Library in Chicago. I listened to 'Mourning Glory' about the Victorian culture of death and mourning.

- The Case of Charles Dexter Ward from BBC Four. It's a dramatisation of the HP Lovecraft novel, as if it were being investigated by podcast journalists. Modernised, therefore less rabidly racist than Lovecraft usually is. Good and spoopy!

- [community profile] fanifesto - similar to [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto. A community for fannish manifestos, or why this thing you love is the most amazing thing ever. (I should write a thing for this. I don't know what I should write about, though?)

- [personal profile] memekink - a masterlist of kinkmemes on Dreamwidth! This is a damn good idea.

- [community profile] rocinante - for The Expanse fandom. They're currently doing a S1 rewatch, which is good timing for me and [personal profile] lilacsigil, because we're watching it right now

- [community profile] weekly_food_challenge - Every Wednesday a moderator will post an ingredient or a cuisine; over the following week members will cook something with that ingredient or in that cuisine and post pictures and recipes.
I keep trying to cook something in time for this, and failing. But this week is chickpeas, so maybe I can have a go at some FODMAP-friendly hummus.

[community profile] beautifulmechanical - This is a place to share the music that you love. Please do join the conversation and share any kind of music that you like.

- Cookie Butter Choco Cookie
Sesame Street (Japan) takes on PPAP. Because Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen will never die, it will just be memed and re-memed. Incidentally, I am so weirded out by Cookie speaking Japanese. I think it's a primal, child-brain reaction. I am less disturbed by Elmo doing it, because I am way too old for Elmo, but Cookie? So weird...

I'm not doing very well. The prednisolone did not go down quietly, I had rebound inflammation and I've been back on pred once already for a massive skin flare up (let me tell you about the 1 in 10,000 chance of getting photosensitivity while taking frusemide.) The cellulitis came back and I had another round of antibiotics (let me tell you about the rare side-effect where you can taste clindamycin IN YOUR SALIVA.) I've had lots of meds changes. I feel wrung out and tired all the freaking time. I am pretty down about this. I want to feel well, and not like my skin is crawling off my body. It's busy at work, too, and that is more exhausting than it ought to be.

I've signed up for [community profile] wipbigbang and Camp NaNo, so hopefully I can get some fic posted. I wasn't game to sign up for an actual exchange, so I sadly had to miss out on [community profile] ssrconfidential. I'm starting to be more chatty on Dreamwidth, which is nice, and I did manage to do a big push on answering AO3 comments, which feels like an achievement. My only other achievement was to crochet a sock monkey hat with a big red pompom. I'm quite pleased with it, even if my sister says the button eyes are demonic. That's part of the charm, I think.

Button eyes will eat your soul, my sister says )

I've been hoarding linkspam, too, which I shall try to group in themes:

The Expanse
- From Indiewire, The Expanse: How The Syfy Series Found the Unfindable Actress (Which Means Other Shows Can, Too)
About casting a S2 character, who is apparently female, Polynesian and tall/muscular. This is what made me want to start watching The Expanse, and I'm so glad I did. (I've just finished S1, so no spoilers, please. Apart from what's in this article, I guess.)

Podcasts (mostly The Strange Case of Starship Iris)
- From buzzfeed, 27 Podcasts You Should Listen To In 2017
Which reminds me, I've been listening to The Strange Case of Starship Iris and it's really lots of fun. The first episode drags a bit, but once there's more than a cast of two (from episode two), the dialogue bounces along, and the world building opens up. The story is building f/f UST between Violet and Arkady, it has a trans character and a gender fluid character, and I really like the crew of the Rumor. Would recommend.

You can listen here: The Strange Case of Starship Iris

For non-listeners, there's a transcript of Episode One, which isn't the best episode but it sets up the dynamic between the two characters well:

The Jehovahs just called on us, from which I take to mean that since we have moved, they haven't updated their hobo sign at the gate that says LESBIAN HOUSE. Thanks, lady, I love being told, on my own doorstep, that God loves me despite my choices in life. I asked her to try to be compassionate and then I closed the door on her. (ETA: [personal profile] lilacsigil has ordered us a couple of rainbow flag stickers, one for the mailbox and one for the front door of the pharmacy. We can make our own hobo signs.)

I'm not going to get my Winter Soldier fic finished before Civil War comes out, and it's making me queasy. I want to enjoy and squee over the trailers, but instead I feel guilty and anxious, which is a great mindset to try and write from. I have 60K, I need maybe 15K. I want it done. I like this story a lot, and I want to post it. Ugh.

So, obvs, I am super anxious. Everything is anxious-making. I am very tired and bored of this steam engine in my brain that runs all day and all night, churning out thoughts and feelings that are completely divorced from reality. Even more, I'm tired of knowing these fears are out of perspective and irrational, but still feeling them. It is such a waste of time. I have better things I could with this powerful, energetic, imaginative brain. /is trying to be positive about brain. It's a good brain. It's kept me alive for 45 years.

[personal profile] naye was talking about podcasts, and I am very into podcasts right now! Podcasts are awesome because they free up my hands so I can crochet or shred zucchini or do housework. But even more than that, a podcast puts a brake on my anxiety-based running dialogue with myself. I can't listen to my inner voice berating me when there's a voice in my ear telling me something I really want to know.

I'm going to link to [personal profile] naye's recs for fictional podcasts, because I agree with all of the recs, and listen to all of those stories (except for 'Alice isn't Dead' but it's queued.) ETA: Done and I'm never eating omelet again.
